Dan was ill a couple of years ago with cancer but resumed touring. In addition to his seemingly never ending European dates, he has a short NE tour scheduled for late June and early July. I am pissed that it looks like I will be missing his NYC show as I will be away.

But yes, if Warner is playing for Drivin N Cryin, it makes a lot of sense to have Dan perform as he would be available. I would not be surprised to see him as one of the guests.

While I have respect for Randolph’s talents, I have little desire to see his band. Just find him to be boring.

I don't think Warner is with DNC anymore. Laur Joamets has been their guitarist for the last couple years. I really like the songs I've heard from their new album that's coming up.

I agree with ya Smitty, Cracker would be the perfect replacement. I also think Robinson was quick to cancel this gig and not suggest, hey let's do the "As The Crow Flies" instead. Crowes tunes are not heavy keyboard as per CRB, so they could pull it off.

Personally I'd sub Southern Culture On The Skids (SCOTS) for Robert's project anyday. or Michelle Malone and Drag The River, or Tinsley Ellis or Jupiter Coyote or Dan Baird and Homemade Sin or Magnapop or Magpie Salute or Blackberry Smoke or
I saw Jupiter Coyote with Bloodkin last weekend. Really fun trip down memory lane. Haven't seen JC in probably 12 years, if not longer. Bloodkin is touring with recycled DBT road cases. Look closely enough and you can see the stenciling behind the tape.

Looking forward to this show in September. As others have said, I can take or leave the Marquee Club. It's fine, but it's not a great value. An indulgence.

Curious if anyone has heard about any special guests or bands to be added to the show. Someone posted that Robert Randolph was added due to the CRB cancellation but he is not appearing on the bill when I checked this morning.

That's weird, they made a big announcement about adding RR to the bill, but you're right, I just checked the FB and Fox page for the event. He's not there and it's not on his website. Nothing against RR, but it wouldn't bother me a bit if we got longer sets from DBT and DNC and then a superjam to round out the night.

A month to go for what looks like a good night of damn Rock n Roll.

Pretty stoked for this show Friday night. First DBT show since the Variety Playhouse last September and first DnC show in like 20 years, though I did see Kevn solo a couple times a few years back. I see Michelle Malone was added (which someone in this thread actually recommended earlier) and still no sign of Robert Randolph since the initial announcement he'd be replacing Chris Robinson (which I'm kinda happy to do without, both RR and CR, honestly).

Wonder if there will really be any special guests, or if that's just pre-show hype?

Just hype. So disappointing. If you don't get all four members of R.E.M. there, it's just not much of a show, that's all I'm saying.

Yep, total snoozefest.

So I missed the start of the show, having sent in an order to Mellow Mushroom only to find it hadn't gotten there and had to wait while it was cooked, and then had to get a physical ticket in hand since my phone was dead, but the tiny bit of Dodd and the Councilmen I heard sounded just fine.

I'm not sure what the next band was called, as it didn't appear to have a name. Apparently, these three gentlemen--Bill Berry, Mike Mills, and Peter Buck--had some success with their last venture, and thus you can hear them on the classic rock radio. Mr. Berry's son also played in this band, I believe. It was quite good. They opened with "Fall On Me", with Kevn Kinney on vocals, followed by "The One I Love". I was surprised to learn that Mr. Kinney was not the original fourth member of that group. I've heard those songs somewhere, I'm sure, and these versions sounded very much like the originals.

The next three songs featured different vocalists: Rick Richards singing "Battleship Chains", Vanessa Briscoe Hay singing "Crazy", and John Grey singing "Money Changes Everything". Many people joined the band for "Battleship Chains". These songs were mostly unfamiliar to me. The final song was not: "Texarkana", with Mike Mills singing.

Okay, this coy bullshit is probably annoying you by now as much as it is annoying me.

I totally freaked out--my jaw literally dropped and I'm sure a fly or two flew in--when I realized I was essentially hearing R.E.M. Not being familiar with Drivin' and Cryin', I had no idea who Kevn Kinney was, and he sounded so right on that song and the next that I wondered whether Michael Stipe had grown out his hair and put on a few pounds. Finally realizing it wasn't Stipe took a tiny bit of amazement off the top, but only a little. It shouldn't've been surprising he wasn't as important to the live sound as the instrumentalists, but it was. And Mike Mills sounded great singing "Texarkana", a song I love and which I assume went out to all the Arkansawyers in the audience.

I slipped out for my one beer and got into a humongous wait, so I missed half of one of Michelle Malone's two songs. That was a bummer, as I really enjoyed what I heard. The next band was Drivin' and Cryin', and I enjoyed them a lot. There was another crowd scene at the end of their set on "Straight to Hell". That's a really good song!

After the evening's rocktioneer got a grand and a half out of someone in the audience for a nice looking D'Angelico guitar vandalized with a bunch of musicians' scrawls, DBT hit the stage with "Tornados", "Three Dimes Down", and "Days of Graduation"->"Ronnie and Neil", which is when the stage hit back.

There is nothing funny about an equipment malfunction on stage when it happens to you. I still remember the night Jenny Lee Rickenbacker decided to hold out on me and and the bassist from the band we were opening for had to pull her out of my hands and drop his p-bass strap around my neck. I was so angry!

So I didn't find it funny when Patterson's mike went out. It seemed to me that he might've had monitors, but that he didn't know for a couple of lines he wasn't in the house mix. The two sound techs who came out to fix it started fiddling with something down near Patterson's left foot, but he pointed over to his left. I think that's the point when both techs left the stage, in opposite directions, leaving Patterson with this "Hello?" look on his face. Then he moved to Jay's mike, stooping to get to it. He sang a verse and then walked away and that poor tech in glasses ran out to raise the boom--just a little too high, I thought.

Up to that, it was just a shit sundae for all concerned, but this was the cherry on top:

Before Patterson got back to it, the main pole sank, spontaneously, leaving the mike lower than before.

The futility of that is funny. That poor sound tech.

After that, the show just proceeded. I can't find the set list on line at the moment, and I didn't keep one myself. No outrageous rarities, just a good solid set, ending with a huge jam on "Rockin' In The Free World".

It was a really good night in a beautiful theater!

I would have completely, 100% lost my shit during Battleship Chains. That has always been one of those irresistible tunes that I can't listen to and not scream the lyrics.

That's exactly what happened to me. As soon as Rick Richards walked onstage, I knew that's where they were going. My friend who went with me isn't as versed in all these bands, so he was entertained by me losing my mind every time a new guest walked out onstage.
