DBT tracks week #15- Checkout Time In Vegas
A bloody nose, empty pockets, a rented car with a trunk full of guns
It ain't true that the sun don't rise in Vegas,
I've seen it once
I love this song. It fits a category of Cooley songs that throw a few descriptive elements of a story and let your mind fill in the rest (When The Pin Hits The Shell is another example). Now in this case we know the bones of the tale by knowing that this was essentially Scott Baxendale's story, but it still works in the same way. Gorgeous, haunting, melodic, what else could you possibly want?

We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

I have always thought this was a beautiful song...
I've heard tales of what goes down there ...

Great choice, TC. Yet another BTCD track with those beautiful Spooner keyboards and Shonna's harmonies. Someone needs to dig out the links to those old Scott Baxendale interviews.

She might have been somebody's mama
he might have been somebody's son
but if the sun went down on them that night in Vegas,
they're luck was good as gone
Love this one live!

Really? It's a great song, but I think it's as much of a show killer as I'm Sorry Huston.
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

It's not secret that I'm a total Cooley fanboy, but this is one of my least favorite songs from him. I think it has the potential to be great, but it seems like it's missing a verse or two. Also agree with Zip that it's kind of a mood-killer live.

The Opening Act>>>>>Checkout Time in Vegas>>>>>sink hole>>>>>Huston>>>>>Where the Devil Don't Stay>>>>PPOTM
was the way it went down at the Pageant March 28, 2009
and it was no fuckin snoozefest.
That was crazy good, varied in emotion, insert some smart musical term here like tempo or something, and rock show tinglie worthy
That song makes me want to spill a drink on someone.

Testify LM, Testify!!
Would not have changed 1 thing about that night if they'd have given me the choice.
Crazy good indeed.
They also played Checkout the first time I saw em in Oct 07. BTCD had not been released yet, but that song still stood out to me as memorable. I enjoy it even more live than the studio version.

I love songs that don't spell it out for you and allow your imagination to put it all together - and that's not easily done while keeping the song interesting, and this one works perfectly. Spooner owns it though.
E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.

I'll see if I can find it on 9B.
EDIT: Nevermind, it now auto-forwards to this site, so I can't look anything up there anymore. bummer

I just did some digging and found an article about Baxendale that I believe is the one that was posted back on 9B....

(it's a very long article but it's a must-read for anyone who wants to know the backstory to Checkout Time in Vegas.)
I also found these...

yes we're talking about the same guy who built these beauties among others...

Re: DBT tracks week #15- Checkout Time In Vegas
Great story and a pretty good song, but not a song I ever really want to hear live. Just a downer and a good song to grab a beer and take a piss too, but have to be quick since its so short.
Now if they would have just left out Checkout Time and Houston. Kidding.
Cooley has some killer songs, this just isnt one of them. One of his worse songs on BTCD, along with Lisa's Birthday.(A bad Cooley song is still not that bad.)

This is one of my top 10 Cooley songs!!!
It just leaves you wanting more, the melody is haunting and beautiful and creeps right into your head and stays there for a bit!!! Also a great slow song to dance to with a "friend"

Wow, what a story. I have always dug this song, but had no idea about the story behind it. That is some intense shit.
