White Eagle Hall is a pretty cool venue. And that C'ville date looks pretty doable.

Have tickets for Fitzgeralds already. Will have to make a call on Space closer to the date, but am hopeful I can work it out.

Will be at both. Space is a great venue and his last show there was outstanding.

I got full video of the Cooley show in Charlottesville and it came out pretty darn good, all things considered. Should have it up on YT tomorrow.

Don't have the setlist offhand, but he played Lisa's Birthday for the first time since the infamous 9:30 Club show in March 2009.

That show was loose as hell man.

Maybe an odd or dumb question but simply out of curiosity: how does Cooley (or Hood for that matter) get around to solo shows? Does he have a tour bus or does he drive himself?

Pretty sure Cooley was just riding solo in a car.
No way a solo tour (for either of them) could afford a bus.
When I saw Patterson & The Downtown Rumblers whenever that tour was, they were riding in a Sprinter Van.

There was no merch at the C-Ville show. I really wanted one of those posters. How can I get one?

Regarding the Jersey City show the other night: I thought there were some really tremendous highs (Pulaski, Sounds Better in the Song, Checkout Time and Space City come to mind). But I also thought that some of the songs that he played that had alternate arrangements (such as Perfect Timing) didn't work. I'm not going to speculate on what went down backstage during the intermission that led to Cooley replaying Filthy and Fried in the second set but it was definitely a classic Cooley moment and I don't think he had any idea. Good to hang with wordman, vincent, phungi, emandrisdad and emily, but overall a sparsely attended show (under a hundred, I bet). Where were all you NYC folks??

Also I have to mention that it's a pretty good week that begins with Cooley solo on Monday night and will end with Patterson solo on Saturday night.

The Cville show was similar... decent crowd though.

By 9.15 or so Mike was shall we say, pretty well boiled.

I have an extra for the NYC show tonight if anybody wants it. No charge.

Well, it's now tomorrow:

The crowd: I don't know if it was sold out but the venue looked very crowded & full to me. Because of the way the tables are arranged it's hard to estimate how many people were there, but it's a decent sized sit down club/bar. The crowd seemed to be very knowledgeable about both DBT and Cooley at a level higher than I'm used to seeing at Boston area shows. Could just be that it was more obvious in the acoustic setting but it may just be that it's hard for me to remember sometimes that the DBT audience extends well beyond 3dd and the FB page lol. My impression is that folks were most familiar w/ the songs from SRO and American Band. I continue to think it's so cool that the band's most recent album found (is finding?) such a large audience. The audience was quietly respectful throughout and responded enthusiastically after just about every song. The one almost sing along was to the last 3 lines of Zip City and sounded awesome; Cooley himself stopped to listen

Cooley is a curious solo performer to me. He generally doesn't talk to/interact with the audience that much and last nite was pretty extreme in that regard. Which I don't understand. When one thinks Cooley, words like witty, quick, charismatic and storyteller come immediately to mind and I don't understand why he doesn't take more advantage of those attributes when he performs. Other than that, he was in fine voice and really attacked (in a good way) most of the songs. The solo acoustic arrangements were mostly a plus although I agree w/ Clams that "Perfect Timing" was one of the few that didn't work that well. The music was a little same-y early on but broadened out somewhat as the show evolved. The main thing though is that the songs were great and Cooley sang them really well w/ feeling. I almost said that the songs were well-chosen but when one talks about Cooley's relatively abbreviated catalog (compared to Patterson's), it's pretty hard to go wrong Cooley seemed to be having significant problems w/ the tuning on his guitar and took several "time outs" to try to fix the problem, including one that went on for what seemed like a really long time.

Songs that particularly struck me: Ghost, Marry Me, Checkout Time, Ramon, Pulaski, Uncle Frank & Cottonseed (both truly extraordinary), 72, Zip City, F&F, Surrender and Love Like This. That's about half the songs which seems about right. Plus the lyrics to "First Air" made more sense to me last nite than they ever have before which was interesting.
Zip City came through even though Cooley forgot the words part way thru and had to start again. There was a little extra gusto the 2d time

Where the Devil Dont Stay was particularly unfortunate. Not only did Cooley forget the words, he then seemed to pick the song up again only to repeat the same few lines three times before giving it up. As others have noted about other shows, these problems were mostly post-intermission.

Staying relevant: Cooley changed "from Chinese troops to terrorists" in Ramon to something I didn't quite catch and "caravans." Much of the audience caught it and responded positively(see first paragraph above).

The one time Cooley did tell a story before a song, it was about "Lisa's Birthday." The story was funny and set the song up to be heard in a different way (i.e. played for laughs, not pathos). It worked fine that way but was a bit jarring.

I was w/ 2 relative DBT newbies who both loved the show and everyone around me seemed very happy. Definitely go to the show if you have a chance.

We were able to see the Durham show - first solo show we've seen. And then we were able to see Hood in DC a week later. We were blown away. Really good show. Apparently Cooley lived in Durham for a short while back in the 90s. We really like the MotroCo venue. We've seen several shows there now and it doesn't disappoint.

I liked the different arrangements, slowed and stripped down versions of great Cooley songs.
