We're on the same page. I too don't get the decision, or maybe I just disagree with it. But it's not mine to make.Cole Younger wrote:And we are back to square one. It was rhetorical.Iowan wrote:Patterson, I guess.Cole Younger wrote:Oh I think you're dead on the money, Iowan. Again, who cares?

You both get some serious respect from me.Iowan wrote:Yeah, but that's just bad ass. "Marry Me" actually has a sweet sentiment to it.Mr. B wrote:Well, we had our wedding band learn and play "Marry Me" at our wedding.Iowan wrote:
I've heard "One" by U2 at a wedding too. Yup, people are idiots.
I once played/sang it at a friend's wedding, with the wedding band. They didn't know it, but had all heard the song and figured it out. It was completely unplanned. I was an usher, and creamed at that point. The best part was that my buddy and has wife had a two year old, so the opening lines got a few looks from the crowd.
Funny you should mention that because this thread had me thinking about this: When DBT played the other Portland (Maine) for the first time, Patterson seemed quite excited by it and made a point of mentioning it more than once. The band opened w/ a smoking "Southern Thing." It was perfect. At the time I believe I described it as something like a "statement of purpose." Great moment, great night.Iowan wrote:My guess is at this point he's less concerned about people who wave the rebel flag misinterpreting it, and more worried about the Portlandia crowd misinterpreting it.

Re: Born in the USA
My list is different than most of what I'm seeing on this thread. Born in the USA would fall into "the rest of 'em" with me.
Born to Run
The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle
Greetings from Asbury Park
Nebraska
Darkness on the Edge of Town
(Outside of Born to Run, the other four are all basically tied---I ranked based on what I'm feeling tonight).
Tunnel of Love
The River
the rest of 'em

Re: Born in the USA
The fact that this thread has had this many posts (on the DBT sub-forum, no less) makes it clear we need a new album ASAP
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

Re: Born in the USA
Born In The USA is another of those Bruce records that could've been greater with a different track selection. It is what it is, that production kills it. Far prefer side 2 to side 1.
Best Springsteen record is a tough one, for me it is Darkness. With that said though, I think side 2 of The Wild, The Innocent is one of the greatest side 2's of any record ever. So there's that. Still find it amazing he threw away the equivalent of 6 records worth of material for that one which would've been a very impressive career for anyone else.
Post 2000 albums... hmmm, most have their moments but none are start to finish without skipping anything.
Lucky Town/Human Touch hybrid...
Roll Of The Dice
Lucky Town
Human Touch
Souls Of The Departed
Better Days
Living Proof
I Wish I Were Blind
The Long Goodbye
My Beautiful Reward

Yep, I had that happen, too:Iowan wrote:I've heard "One" by U2 at a wedding too. Yup, people are idiots.
You ask me to enter
then you make me crawl
but I can't keep holding on
to what you've got
when all you've got is hurt...
It was the wedding party dance song. All of us kind of clutching on to semi-strangers, going 'huh?"
I’d have a lot of nerve to go feigning shock and outrage/If I'd been my example I’d be worse

That's a new one to me. And super awkward to use that song.

Re: Born in the USA
Yup. And they did it sort of in the order we stood at the altar. So, there were some couples separated, and LOTS of strangers kinda tossed together. A super-smart couple, too. Maybe it was some kinda psychological experiment? Dunno. They definitely did not listen to the lyrics, that's for sure...Iowan wrote:They made the whole wedding party dance together?glennrwordman wrote:Yep, I had that happen, too:Iowan wrote:I've heard "One" by U2 at a wedding too. Re: Born in the USA
Yes, this took way longer than it should have but in addition to the part that's the kind of overthinking from me you all have come to know and no doubt love I was a little surprised at how often I had to replay songs because my attention totally wandered (never a good sign of course but really sad where the Boss is involved). Whatever, here's my single disc of Lucky Touch INPO except that they more or less follow the albums' order:
Human Touch
With Every Wish
Roll of the Dice
Man's Job
I Wish I Were Blind
Real World
Better Days
Lucky Town
If I Should Fall Behind
Living Proof
Souls of the Departed
My Beautiful Reward
I thought the album should be 12 songs (the average of the 2 originals) but I have to admit that my last 2 choices (Souls of the Departed, I Wish I Were Blind) aren't quite up to the rest, so it's a really good 10 song album or a pretty good 12 song album.
Arguably, one might deduce Bruce's version of the one album version from his live MTV Plugged album from that era. Of the 13 songs on that album, 8 are from the 2 we're talking about. Of those 8, seven are on my 10 song album and all 8 are on my 12 song version.
The song Human Touch turns out to be quite the earworm. I blame you clams, ummm, no, I mean you smitty.
I gotta say that I cringe every time I hear that line "You were the Red Sea and I was Moses" from "Leap of Faith." Ok, i get the idea of sex as religion; I've even written about that sort of thing a fair amount over the years, but that's not exactly a subtle metaphor. I mean even "Red Headed Woman," a song that only manages to avoid saying "cunnilingus" because it doesn't really rhyme w/ much, is more subtle even though it skips the religion part.

Re: Born in the USA
Bruce definitely has a thing about sex & religion:
2nd verse:
2nd verse:
Now old sweet Virgin Mary, she runs the Holy Grail saloon
Where for a nickel they'll give you whiskey and a personally blessed balloon
And the Holy Ghost, he's the host with the most, he runs the burlesque show
Where they let you in for free but, oh, hit you for your soul when you go
And Mary serves Mass on Sunday and then she sells her body on Monday to the boot maker who will pay the highest price
But he don't know he got stuck with a loser, Mary's a stone junkie, what's more she's a boozer
She's only been made once or twice by some kind of magic
Now it's dark.
Re: Born in the USA
Don't blame me. IMO you'd be lucky to get a decent EP from Lucky Town and Human Touch, let alone an entire record. I'm not a fan.beantownbubba wrote: I blame you clams, ummm, no, I mean you smitty.
