I believe on the Cooley's House bootleg, he says "this is a love song for my bass player", so I really think it's about Shonna (just like I think You Got Another is about Jason).
We have a winner!!!

Thanks for the hearfelt post above Smitty.

The sun's a des-perate star that burns like evry single one befooore

Killer tune. It's like Jason's "It Makes No Difference" and I believe they may be the two most perfect songs. ever.

wondering others' interpretation of this line:

Stop me if you've heard this one before:
A man walks into a bar and leaves before his ashes hit the floor.

Either the man walked into the bar and saw something he didn't like (i.e., infidelity),

or
the man walked into the bar and realized that he isn't going to find what he is looking for in here
We got messed up minds for these messed up times...

Good question. I think it's the latter, but it could very well be the former. Either way what an evocative line. I often underestimate this song and that's a mistake.
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

The line "stop me if you've heard this one before" makes me think a joke is coming. So I interpret the next line as being sarcastic, like he never "leaves before [his] ashes hit the floor," he stays for a while.

Oh, hey. I already said this a couple years ago:

I took it as black humor. A reference to all the jokes that begin "So and so walks into a bar..." The narrator is using alcohol to deal with his loneliness, so the idea of leaving a bar so quickly (before his "ashes hit the floor") is funny to him.
ain't no static on the gospel radio

Some days this is my favorite DBT song. It's always a top 3. It came along at the perfect time in my life... and sometimes I can still relate, unfortunately. David Barbe brought the atmosphere to this one.
E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.

This is the song that got me hooked on DBT. Still leaves me speechless.

I feel it is Jason's best song. I also feel he has yet to top it.
