I do not want to be a drooling, babbling fan boy. Yet, here we are and here I am, a drooling fanboy to the max. I'm actually not too embarrassed about it because it seems the only sensible response to what I've heard, seen and experienced the last 2 nites.

Let's review: Thursday nite's show was pretty damn astounding and as a matter of showmanship, just plain crazy for the first night of a 3 night run. Patterson apparently realized this when, while introducing the camp amped band tonight, he tried to walk back Thursday night saying something like "we did a Saturday show on Thursday so I'm not sure where this is going." (I wasn't there at the time but I think this accurately reflects what I was told by several people who were). There is simply no way that tonight's show could or should have topped thursday's but I don't think anyone who was there for both shows would say that Thursday was better. IOW, the band basically achieved the impossible.

The band took a very different approach to the show, clearly differentiating it from Thursday's. It began w/ slower, less overtly rocking songs, but the power of the lyrics came through loud and clear and there was even something of a funk shading to several of the songs. Jay didn't even play guitar until about 5 or 6 songs in. Patterson, never one to miss a moment, hit the nail right on the head from the very beginning w/ a lovely low key tribute to the Robertsons, saying "this is what it's all about." For those who don't know, Mr. R died a couple of weeks ago, but Mrs. R, Lorna, chose to come to all the way from Scotland for homecoming despite (because of?) her grief. I don't know Lorna well but I did speak to her briefly and she did seem to be taking some comfort and getting some healing from the community, the homecoming "experience" and the shows. Patterson's tribute/acknowledgement was perfect.

The opening songs were a combination of songs played and not played on Thursday and the overall effect was very different yet just as exciting and enveloping. "Living Bubba" was the absolutely perfect song to complement Patterson's comments about the Robertsons. As on the album, "Baggage" is not really a rock song yet manages to totally rock out and bring the audience along w/ it. I'm a big fan of "Pauline Hawkins" so it was great to hear it for the first time in a while and the band nailed it. And then came this thing allegedly called "72." It was titanic, it was monstrous, it was, well, mean as hell. It was incredible and the best version I've ever heard. But that just set the table.

Yesterday I talked about context and there's no better example than "Days of Graduation" > "Ronnie & Neil. R&N was terrific on Thursday but w/ the springboard of "Days" it achieved new heights and even greater power. And "Surrender Under Protest" benefited from following "Ronnie & Neil" as their different but complementary themes worked beautifully in tandem. Plus who knows what Patterson was implying when some guy named "Johnny" suddenly appeared in the "Days of Graduation" car along w/ Bobby and his girlfriend. A threesome? A love triangle? A simple mistake? Who cares, it was glorious. :D BTW, in case anybody thinks I'm giving the band too much grief about the minor glitches I point out, I do it because I love it, not to be critical. There's something humanizing about it in a way that makes the band even better and more worthy of my admiration than hitting every note or lyric perfectly.

I never really thought about "Sinkhole" and "Uncle Frank" as a tandem but it turns out that they, too, address similar subjects in complementary and thought provoking ways. And, at least in its current incarnation, "Uncle Frank" continues to amaze not just for its lyrical virtuosity but for basically being a ballad in the form of a hard driving rock song. Mind bending stuff.

I am sorry to have to admit that if you look back far enough in the 3dd archives you will find some comments from me to the effect that "Why Henry Drinks" is relatively minor Hood. After Wednesday and tonight, two very different versions but each terrific, that opinion has pretty much zero validity. Thanks to cooleygirl for opening my ears to hearing this one in a fresh way.

I had a strange but incredible moment during "Buttholeville/State Trooper." The thought that came to my mind as I was being carried away on a wave of musical ecstacy was that "this is routinely amazing." Say what? That's pretty much an oxymoron and it doesn't make much sense when read literally but that's where this band is at right now: they routinely amaze, astonish and delight at a level I've rarely experienced in a lifetime of listening to rock music.

Essentially, everything from "Ronnie & Neil" on was one long encore as the band kept reaching new heights and adding new twists and delightful moments to well known songs. I mean, think about that just from a showmanship perspective: From about the 8th song of a 25 song show the band kept up a level of momentum, excitement and intensity that rivals any other band's 2 or 3 song encore set.

I've been saying for a while that I think that this is absolutely the best version of the band. Obviously that's a matter of opinion and it was certainly arguable, but I'm not sure it's even arguable anymore. And after talking to a number of people this weekend I'd say that view is approaching the status of conventional wisdom (i.e. widely accepted). And I hope we don't start taking the band for granted. Jay's multi instrumental virtuosity (especially when he plays keys and guitar on the same song) is a joy to behold. I feel like Brad's drum sound is crisper and sharper than ever and he is a complete master of every tempo and style the band plays. I've been raving about Matt since he joined the band and I can't do his playing justice. But I have to say that I was glad to see more of the previously typical but seldom seen recently Matt's trademark beaming smile and occasional dancing/bopping around the stage. I'd been feeling that Matt was getting a little too John Entwhistle-y in the stoic bassman mold and it was nice to see at least something of a return to loose and joyful lform. The Dimmer Twins don't need any more praise from me but I will say that the evident joy they take in playing these days and the pride they obviously have in the band and its accomplishments is something special by itself. Also, I get such a kick out of it when all the players but Brad line up across the stage at 4 mikes. It's a very powerful presentation but beyond that it's a format that reveals the joy and pride of the players in a way I find very gratifying and a whole lot of fun.

A word about the sound & lights: The sound at the rock show has been so good for so long now that I guess i take it for granted but I shouldn't. There was a little too much feedback on Thursday (though not enough to be a problem) but on the whole the sound was crystal clear and beautifully balanced both nites- one could hear every instrument and every voice. As a matter of personal preference I tend not to care for the use of backlighting as a major element of show lighting and right now backlighting is a major component of the presentation. But it is working fantastically well and other than a couple of dark moments (which were clearly intentional just not my cup of tea) I have really been enjoying the presentation this wkend.

I am in some metaphysical way actually having a hard time believing that show I just saw really happened. It was astonishing and exciting and practically perfect in every way. The effect on the audience was obvious and overwhelming. After "Let There Be Rock" the audience was in pretty much of a frenzy and it reminded me of a highpoint moment at a Who show I experienced circa 1980 at Madison Square Garden. Yes, I'm comparing the who and 20,000 fans in an arena to DBT and 600 fans at the 40 Watt. It was that intense. Jack Flash's prediction that brains may well be splattered all over the 40 Watt was prescient yet too conservative 'cause it only took 'til Friday, not Saturday. Wow, what a show.

And there's another show to come!!!!
Always enjoy your write ups on the shows, man. I feel like I was there.

I was roaming hither and yon for the second half of the show after my usual spot at the tiki bar became untenable due to an annoying frat bro. He wasn't out of line or anything, but persisted in talking to his buddies when anything but the greatest hits were played. Falls under the "it's not you it's me" category. Saw this in my travels: out of nowhere, a guy in front of me dropped to his knees like he'd been knocked out and started crawling around and sweeping the floor with his hands. I expected the sweet smell of vomit, but turned out he dropped his glasses. Have to be expensive glasses before I'd crawl on the 40 Watt floor towards the end of a Rock Show.

Amazing write-up, as always. I was feeling off last night (probably some combination of going harder than necessary on Thursday and the mountains of delicious yet greasy food I had been shoving down my gullet all afternoon), and that combined with the weirdly downbeat run of songs they started off the set with meant I didn't quite achieve the sense of euphoria Bubba did. But I will agree that everything from Days of Graduation/Ronnie and Neil on was as perfectly sequenced as it gets. I thought we'd hit an apex with what was probably the best Buttholeville/State Trooper I've ever heard (coming around the middle of set, reminiscent of where the also usually near-the-end song "Lookout Mountain" was positioned last night), but the intensity just kept ramping up from there, somehow, even when Cooley finally slowed things down and played an incredible version of Sounds Better in the Song for the second night in a row. Song of the night was Steve McQueen. Never met the Robertsons, but Patterson exclaiming that "John Robertson was cooler than Steve McQueen" was still special.

I feel like we're playing Russian Roulette with the Cooley songs though. Last night he forgot some words to Zip City and Women Without Whiskey, and tonight he almost completely botched the first verse to Shit Shots Count. What will he screw up tonight? Will it matter? No, it will not.

Feeling rested and revved up for Night 3. Got a feeling we'll be seeing another ecstatic Bubba review come the wee hours of Sunday morning. See everyone at Nuci's soon.

x2 and thanks for your reviews bubba, they are wonderful (if not maddening) for all of us who couldn't be there. I swear I don't know how you can write so eloquently (and so long!) fresh out of the rock show and especially given the hour.

But I have to ask: do you actually write these reviews or do you just copy and paste from the previous year's HC shows? ;)
Nah, I write 'em in advance ;)

Actually the late nite thing is kind of medicinal for me. Despite the lateness of the hour, the generally wrung out feeling of experiencing the rock show and my, ummmm, maturity, I'm usually too wired to get to sleep after the show. Writing helps me process the show but also sort of transfers that post show energy in a way that allows me to sleep. Or maybe I just bore myself to sleep. Whatever, it works.

Not even sure what to say about last night’s show. I thought there was absolutely NO WAY they could top Thursday’s show, but as soon as they launched into The Living Bubba to start the show I knew it was gonna be one for the ages. I can’t decide which night was better, as Thursday I felt like they just walked in and blew the doors off the place, whereas last night they eased into it more before going on a searing run from 72 all the way through Ain’t Talking About Love. Hard to pick a favorite part of the show, but I swear every time they move Zip City to Let There Be Rock I experience some kind of sonic ecstasy. Furthermore, Angels & Fuselage was an excellent close to an even more excellent show.

Also special shoutout to the gentlemen up front in the Steve McQueen sweatshirt, not just for having his song played, but spending a good 30 minutes discussing SEC football with me :D

Thought I’d get a leg up on the competition last night, but unfortunately for those scoring at home:
PBR Tall Boys: 1
Goddamnit Chesters: 1
Me: 0

It was amazing to see them essentially tear down familiar songs to their core, and find a new groove or hidden melody to jam out and guide them back... Can't disagree with anything BTB posted, and can't imagine what is in store for tonight.

Also, for whatever reason (mad genius?) Jonicont made the decision to record the Friday rather than the Saturday show this year, so we managed to capture this epic show. With a 4-camera shoot.. Props to John, Bill, Luke, Sarah, Tyler, Allison and someone else I am forgetting... Already looking forward to next year's DVD/Blu-Ray!

I’ve never been to homecoming. We’ve got two girls. One 7, one 4. I turn 40 in July. Kinda feel like my time is running out. 2019, homecoming. It has to happen. See you there.

Might as well start at the beginning: Even among the rarefied and self-selected group that is artists/musicians starting to make a name for themselves there is a bright and harsh line dividing those who have it from those who don't. Lilly Hiatt has IT. She still has a few things to learn. Judging only by this show, her catalog is not that deep, a recognizable cover would help fill out the set, and she really needs to figure out how to pace her show (I would think that someone like Patterson could really help her with that) but there's no doubt that she's a serious talent with a generous amount of IT. Not exactly inspirational verse, maybe more like ear-catching verse: "Ooooh I want to go home, ooooh where's my home?"

The best advice I've ever gotten: Always go to the show. To which I can only add, ALWAYS! I think that's become the rock and roll equivalent of "a penny saved is a penny earned" or some other ubiquitous and inarguable saying.

Epic show, epic series of shows, soon to be legendary wkend.

I think I can safely say that when the leader of your favorite band comes out on stage and before playing a note says, "Thursday was Saturday, huh? Thursday is NOT fucking Saturday. Saturday is fucking Saturday! Let's go!" you're probably in for a wild ride. Even so who knew it was going to be 3 full hours of intensity, exhilaration and exploration of the wide and deep DBT catalog.

More than one person said to me it was the best rock concert they had ever seen. Even more said it was the best DBT show they had ever seen. I'm trying to stay out of the ranking game because it's so biased in favor of the most recent experience, but there is not doubt that this was an epic performance that could not possibly have left anyone dissatisfied or feeling cheated in any way. It was a fitting culmination to a great weekend of rock shows and at least among the people I spoke to, it was unanimous that as a 3 show run, nobody had ever seen anything quite like it.

Highlights were everywhere, but some that stood out for me: The best live versions I can remember hearing of "Righteous Path," "What It Means," "Do It Yourself," "Hell No," and "I'm Eighteen." Patterson's political rap during "What It Means" was the most eloquent I've ever heard him - he didn't sound anything like a rock star awkwardly trying to be relevant and he sounded everything like a guy who had something important to say, believes it passionately and knows how to say it Really impressive and he kept his calm and aplomb even as Cooley tried to disrupt things w/ a couple of well placed bon mots of the "only Cooley" variety. I think "Play it All Night Long" is my favorite DBT cover song mostly because it feels and sounds like it IS a DBT song, but after tonight's version of "I'm 18" I'm gonna have to do some serious thinking on the subject for precisely the same reason: It's not like i didnt know it was a cover but damn it sounded like it ought to be a DBT song

I don't want to put words in anybody's mouth so let me be clear that this is me imagining what Cooley might have been thinking, not anything he actually said or thought, but when he dropped a hyperdrive version of "zip city" only an hour into a 3 hour show, it felt like Cooley saying "you want to know how good we are? I'll tell you how good we are: We can play a song as good and beloved as "zip city" in the middle of a set as if it were "just another song" and still have more reserved in the tank than any other band performing their greatest hits."

Perhaps you already knew this, but per Cooley himself I learned tonight that "First Air of Autumn" is about pretty girls and pretty boys and why they're attracted to each other."

Some of the loudest audience singing was reserved for some of the less frequently played songs like "Company I Keep" and especially "18 Wheels of Love". I don't know if "KKK" is exactly in that category but the audience response during that one was among the loudest and most sustained of the evening. The crowd seemed close to delirious during those workouts.

This was the first time I'd heard the "Southern Accents/Ever South" medley and I thought it was beautiful. I have the sense that I may like "Ever South"more than many, but I was really excited to hear it after a long absence from shows I've attended. When the album came out, I believe I described "Ever South" as "freakin' Walt Whitman for the 21st century" and nothing I heard tonight would make me change my opinion.

I may have more to say tomorrow but right now I'm thinking that my plane is gonna leave whether or not I'm on it so I should probably try for at least a little sleep. Thanks to JF for getting the setlist posted so fast. Thanx to the band, crew, Nuci's, all the 3dd'ers and all the DBT fans who made this such a fantastic wkend. I'm pretty sure "were you here in '18?" is going to be a question asked at many homecomings to come.

Just to top things off, the various fund raisers raised over $27,000 for Nuci's Space this weekend. Just incredible. I am proud to be part of this community.
