For anyone who isn't in or doesn't often visit the FB group Missy Cockburn Curtis took this epic photo of Patterson last night. She sent me a less compressed copy and allowed me to host it on my server for anyone to download so long as I give her credit.

Holy fucking shit. Right at 3 hours. Wait 'til you get a load of the set list when Uncle Rickey posts it. A few goodies: The Southern Thing, 18 Wheels of Love, My Sweet Annette, People Who Died with Barbe and son on guitars. So incredibly good and the Variety Playhouse is one of the best sounding rooms I've ever heard. Just amazing.

Was last night the first time "The Southern Thing" has been played since Charlottesville? I'd have been curious to hear Patterson's introduction to the song if there was one.

There was a lengthy intro...

The 9/29 recording is up. The quality on this outstanding, at least on my laptop speakers. I haven't put it on the big ones yet.

Any chance you could summarize, please?

I'm crossing my fingers that there's a recording of it.

I didn't hear it as much as feel it, as I had entered that Rock-and-alcohol-fueled deeply spiritual & cathartic trance that I'm prone to getting lost in when I'm on the rail (altar) at a Rock show (church), so I'm hesitant to even attempt a summary of what exactly was said, but fortunately tape was being rolled so you should be able to hear it soon enough. It was a great moment for us bitter southerners, that's for sure.

It's been a minute since I seen a 3+ hour 30-song set and they weren't even winded. I've said this many times, but they're on a whole nother plane right now, I'm talking best ever. Back in the day they would play this long, but as great as it was they weren't nearly as tight as they are now, and back then by the end they would be exhausted but the past couple nights they were in peak form after the show. I saw Mark Bishop say basically the same thing, but I've said this before and it was always true at the time, but last night was probably the best show I've ever seen and I think it'll stand as one of my favorites ever.

At least until the next one, lol.

So I've noticed the band is playing through without a break for the encore. I wonder if that's just better for the boys??? Keeps the momentum going???

If I were up there I know I'd need a break!

They've been doing that for at least the last year. The encore thing is pure show biz. Most extreme I've seen in awhile was the Cure last year. 3 multi song encores. They ended up being as long as the main set!

They used to explain...we're not going to do an encore, 'cause that's just bullshit, we'll just play up here longer.... Now they don't even bother with that

The Southern Thing banter...part of it was about "ask a thousand Southerners about what the South means, and you'll get a a thousand different answers" and that's the Southern Thing.

Also, did anyone else catch Cooley on Sat. night doing what Eddie Murphy would call the "white man's boogie" during The Perilous Night?

I think it was at the Ogden in January but Patterson said something like "this used to be the part of the show where'd we'd stop, go back stage, do blow, you guys would chant and we'd come back out and play a few more songs. Since we don't do cocaine anymore we're just going to keep playing"
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro

Hope it's alright to stick this here, while in Atlanta, Patterson was a guest on a live recording of The Boogie Monster podcast hosted by comedians Kyle Kinane and Dave Stone. It's a podcast loosely about things like bigfoot and ghosts and whatnot, but there's a lot of food talk and humor thrown in there too. Anyway, Patterson tells a quick ghost story before heading off to sound check.
