DBT in Wilmington, DE

Post by Gang Green »

Got my ticket for the Wilmington show on 20 April. Just got word that the venue, The World Cafe in Wilmington will be closing down in may. Anyway, hope to see some of the Philly/Central PA crew.

I read that that the venue wasn't closing but a different management or booking company is taking over. Not that it really matters.

I will be there. I will be bringing my father who has only had the opportunity to see them as an opener before. I will also be brining a friend who recent began to listen to them.

In for Wilmington, seeing the Decemberists and more importantly Julien Baker on the 14th in Philly. A great musical b-day weekend

I'm in for this. Night 2 of a 4 night run for me.

Gonna be a long day.... 6 hour drive up then driving to DC after the show.

The things we do to maximize rock shows while minimizing days off work...

From yesterday's Philadelphia Inquirer
The World Cafe Live at the Queen in Wilmington is getting set to cease to be — although the Market Street landmark is slated to continue as a music venue after the WCL association ends May 25. In the meantime, there are still some choice shows on the docket, starting with this one, headlined by the time-tested Southern rock outfit Drive-By Truckers, who stepped up and made their most political album -- and one of their best — with last fall’s American Band. Most certainly worth getting there early for is Hiss Golden Messenger, the rootsy North Carolina band fronted by the thoughtful and superb songwriter M.C. Taylor, whose new Heart Like a Levee takes a turn toward Memphis soul. — D.D.

Great venue for the rock show. Sound is fantastic (just stay in front of them balcony if you're on the floor) and the room is a very rustic renovation of an old theater. There is a great interview with Cooley on the local news site (surprisingly insightful for a local reporter) with one of my all time favorite replies from Cooley about playing on 4/20:

Should be a good time all around.

Thanks for sharing. The interview is worth a read, but here is the specific line:
Q: One last question. Your show here in Wilmington falls on 4/20. What is your band's relationship with marijuana?

A: [Laughs.] It is one of the longest and most enduring relationships any of us have ever kept together.

In for DE too. Taking a bus from near Penn Station, NYC, gets me to Wilmington around 5 PM. Where's the pre-rock show crowd going to be?

Also interested in the pre show goings on. I'm going to get there a little early to try and beat the turnpike traffic. Is there anything to do around the venue? Record stores, shops and the like?

I live in Wilmington, not a lot o do in that area of town. But good bar next to the theater, Merchant Bar, more a martini bar than beer bar, but good drinks and great food. Le Fia is a great French bistro across the street. Trolley Square area (other side of I95 - an Uber away) has a lot of great bars and food.

Gotta wonder if Cooley had over-celebrated:

Alterations of time: playing Zip City as his 5th song (10th overall)
Alterations to memory: forgot the words to an entire section of First Air of Autumn, and just stood there blank-faced strumming until the chorus
Poor decision-making: sucking the life out of the set 2x (First Air of Autumn, Once They Banned Imagine) once it got rocking

It was a fun night, surprised they played 10/11 songs off An American Band.

I've seen him do variations of all 3 a few times in the shows I've seen. I've come to expect them and generally don't mind a bit. At Homecoming 2016 he forgot an entire verse of Marry Me (he actually repeated the previous verse, realized it, and then lapsed into silence until the chorus lol).
Turn you demons into walls of goddamned noise and sound.

I guess it's just a matter of personal preference but I like it when the band sometimes slips a traditional "encore type song" into an early part of the set.

Unless you're at a punk show, I think one can pretty much expect the occasional slow one. In DBT's case, not only are some of them fan favorites, but I think the band generally does a good job of managing the flow and momentum of the set. Sometimes the segue into or out of the slow ones seems abrupt but most often they manage to make the whole thing flow quite well. Another subtle but real ability that distinguishes DBT from the pack. Particularly impressive in that they manage it w/out a setlist and do it more or less by "feel." It's also another example of how Hood & Cooley play off each other and I think a pretty fascinating one.
What used to be is gone and what ought to be ought not to be so hard

The first time I saw DBT, they opened with Zip City and closed with Angels and Fuselage. I just sort of assumed that's how a DBT show works.
