I can finally say that this is just a week away!! Who's in besides the guy from Australia and the guy from Massachusetts? I know FL is the land of transplants but somebody who actually lives there has to be going, right?

bubba, I'm am not going to make this show, but I have been to the Culture Room. It is a weird layout. Get there early, go to the upper bar. There is a spot where you can sit & still see the stage (and still be next to the bar). Your welcome.

Kyle Craft: Very good. Last song a solo acoustic number called "the rager" kinda blew me away.

Big crowd. Mostly full for sure; possibly sold out.

Private to slip kid: Great tip. Thx.

Private to clams: As I've told u many times. I'm just not like that. Not that there's anything wrong w/ it. In fact I'm really glad you're learning to love yourself for who u are just like I do.

DBT:

Excellent pre show music as usual but what band has the balls to play the rlling stones before taking the stage?

Generalizations aren't even worth the paper they're not written on. I'll chalk it up to the heat of the moment. OTOH, I can tell u plenty of specific stories. I don't think SE FL is particularly representative of the south, but whatever it is I don't want anymore of it. I really really don't like this place.

Fun show and in some ways maybe the most relaxed I have seen them. I have seen them 5 times during the last year (Austin, Brooklyn, Dallas, Manhattan and last night) and the venue had something to do with the mellow vibe. The crowd was a little less exuberant than usual although they appreciated the show. The Culture Room is a strange but interesting venue. One of the highest stages I have seen in a club with a relatively small standing room although it is spread out. There is an upstairs level on the right side of the stage. I was situated in front of the stage between Jay and Patterson.

So the show saw a confident bar band with nothing to prove. A band loving what they do and doing it incredibly well. Jay is undoubtedly the star of the live performance playing lead on the new songs while doing his thing on keys. The highlight for me was "What It Means" which was an earnest performance with Jay doing the underlying keyboard rhythm and a great bass line. I loved this show even though I have seen better ones. It was nice to see them in a smaller venue.

Next show for me is at the Ryman in Nashville and I will probably go to see them in Webster Hall as I live in NYC although I am not a big fan of the venue. Would have loved to gone to my first Homecoming but it conflicts with a trip to Puerto Rico.

Funny, it's not often that i think of DBT as a "bar band" but Tuesday nite was definitely one of those times, so I guess you're right that there was something about their attitude and/or the atmosphere that gave it that feel. Which is in every way a compliment. A bunch of guys who love what they're doing and whose lives have been saved by rock n roll for sure.

This is the first time I've seen the band doing their current stage show (longish set, no encore, heavy on the new album, a few of the old standbys in semi-regular rotation) and I liked everything about it except for that familiar refrain, if you know you've got a curfew why not shorten the opener or start earlier or both? I really, truly don't understand that and the set felt about 3 or 4 songs short (3 songs would be pretty much what you'd get by taking 15 minutes from Kyle Craft, who was enjoyable but no DBT).

I thought the show started a little slow or uncertain but quickly picked up steam. By Marry Me/R&N it was time to just hang on for dear life. I loved the pairing of Surrender Under Protest and Sinkhole. First time hearing Kinky and it was the rollicking, rockin, kick ass live version I hoped it would be. Rockin' in the Free World was ferocious. Uncle Frank was among the most notably nailed versions of the older songs as was the ever evolving Goode's Field Road. I think it was at the start of Birthday Boy that one of the guitarists (presumably Cooley?) started playing "Shit Shots." :D :D I love those moments as well as the seamless recoveries. I knew about Gimme Some Truth joining the set but it was my first time hearing it and I loved it - appropriately intense and raucous. The pairing w/ "Imagine" is incredibly powerful and pretty much perfect. "Imagine" just continues to amaze me. I can't even say it's the best or my favorite song on the album (don't know what is at any given moment) but there's something so special about that song. I guess it boils down to how Cooley says so much so perfectly with so few words. Incredible stuff.

The crowd seemed familiar w/ the older stuff, not so much the new album and I agree w/ agerst that they were both into it yet somehow a little subdued. Biggest, loudest sing alongs by far were LTBR and Hell No/Rockin. The synth in Ever South seemed to send one audience member into some kind of religious rapture; watching him was like watching the double rainbow you tube or some blissed out scene from Woodstock :) Jay told me afterwards that he actually saw that guy "dancing" while he was playing :)

You know, I liked Shonna's playing a lot and was almost always blown away by Neff, but hearing this band do the older songs I don't see how there can be any question that the band is better than ever. Matt & Jay are just amazing players and Brad just keeps getting better. They've got their unique rock/soul fusion cooking at an incredible level - I'm sure Booker T (to say nothing of David Hood) is very proud. Speaking of EZB, why has nobody mentioned the red, white & blue drum kit? (At least i don't remember reading about it).

It wasn't a "best ever" kind of night, but it was more than enough and just what I needed on both the personal and macro catharsis level, as has already been described by others in this strange and difficult time. Just for the heck of it I gave a cd of AB to a couple i met in the hotel elevator after the show. I hope they like it :)

Can't wait for February!!!
