Surprisingly little political banter (and less banter than a usual DBT show):

As Clams said, Cooley's opening line "We're a Goddamn Fuckin American Band" and they played 2.5 hours, no break. Patterson said: "y'all basically said you didn't want any bullshit, so we're not going to walk off the stage and wait for you to call us back... We have a hard curfew of 12:00 and we're going to play up to it. You won't get any bullshit from the Drive By Truckers" (then they basically blew past the curfew until about 12:10-12:15ish.

Cooley was talkative early in the show, introducing English Oceans with his story of greeting Jimmy Carter as part of his high school marching band (would love a photo of teenaged MC in band uniform), with the KKK present, followed with (and I paraphrase) "A lot has changed but not a lot has changed. Now, they buy their suits at Brooks Brothers (or some other store?) and drive in black limos with police escorts".

Introducing "Ramon Casiano" Cooley said: "This is for the white supremacists" and I think he also (laughing and sarcastically) said "White Power" during the intro.

Towards the end of "People Who Died" Patterson (spent, on his knees) added (repeating every line 2-3x) "When you lose someone... when you lose a loved one... when your candidate loses the election... remind yourself.... it's FUCKING GREAT TO BE ALIVE"

An amazing show with many extended jams and incredible energy. I may only be in my DBT adolescence, but that has to rank up there among top rock shows, even for the seasoned veterans.

Same here Phungi! I rank the Union Transfer show as one of the top 3 DBT shows that I've seen. Their playing and arrangements of the songs and the emotional intensity of their performances was off-the-hook .. fresh and intense. They really outdid themselves last night. Glad I was there .. Sorry I didn't recognize Heather!

I like this no encore thing that they've been doing, they did it in Seattle too. Just keep playing.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to experiencing the new presentation. From what I'm hearing and seeing it seems like the right way to go.

Everyone who has commented so far are on point, great show, crowd, and overall energy.
Glad I got to hear Baggage live. PPOTM threw me off in the beginning, they've changed up the beginning. 2 Daughters was played all electric and was more "rocking", still a great song.
First time in forever I haven't heard Zip City at a show and you know what? I ain't even mad.
I kinda understand their not openly bitching about the election results. Its OK to take the high road sometimes. Wasn't the nearly 2 years of vitriol heading up to 11/8 enough?
Really dug the venue, first time there. It was just big / small enough...

Forgot to mention that Kyle Craft was awesome, esp his "handling" of the crowd at the end ("fuck you and your hate") and the song "Before the Wall".

I also win bets on the next song because I've stolen a lot of Cooley's hand signals. ;-)

Agree with gepman.  There was no need for them to bitch about the election – it was the unspoken undercurrent of literally every song the entire night.  Patterson did change some lyrics to acknowledge it – in PPOTM and also People Who Died.  Patterson also threw the World of Hurt climax “it’s fuckin great to be alive” into People Who Died – and I thought last night’s PWD rivaled the intensity of the versions I saw at the Craig Lieske show in Athens and the one in Brooklyn earlier this year.  It was that good.  PPOTM dropped the guitar intro for an a cappella start which was kinda cool.  2 Daughters sounded like a newer more electric version. Highlights for me were Company I Keep which I thought was especially fun and Patterson’s pissed off, blistering cover of John Lennon’s Gimme Some Truth.  It looked like they were all drinking pretty liberally throughout the show too, with a bottle of (I think) Bulliet Bourbon going on the right side of the stage and the tequila flowing on the left side.   They played 9 of the 11 songs on the new record, omitting only Umpqua and Sun Don’t Shine.  Amusing to watch Patterson singing along to the Cooley songs even when he wasn’t at the mic (even rock stars sing along to Cooley – they’re just like us!!)

I also want to note how great it was to see and hang with so many good people last night, especially after a day as shitty as yesterday was.  As soon as you walked into Prohibition Taproom and saw all the friendly faces, with the beers and bourbon flowing, people talking, commiserating over the election, talking about music and catching up on everyone’s families, and the anticipation of the rock show, etc… well, your mood was instantly lifted. You could smile again and even be happy if only for a few hours.  It was really great. Thank you DBT and thank you friends – you all helped to put a great night on top of a really bad day.  Fucking great to be alive indeed.

Damn, what a show last night! Really paid for it this morning as I am STILL wiping off the cobwebs. Long week so far and a looooong night. Ain't no "spring in 211poundsofpork's step" but it was soooo worth it. I shall definitely post more later about this show when I am revived. At long last, it was great to finally meet Clams who although we blame in a lot for everything under the sun, is one swell dood. Also nice to meet Scratch and Mark Lynn as well. Good times. More later...

Fantastic night with a fantastic bunch of people. Kyle Craft was even more amazing than hyped up to be. I had my girlie moment when his guitarist approached me about my 9:30 Club shirt whilst I was buying some soft pretzels between sets.

Drive-by Truckers are never a let down. The political talk was less than I was expecting, but that just left more time for the rock. My date for the night was even more impressed. Quite overwhelmed by all the love shared between HeAthens and the openness towards him. His first show and he was lucky enough to get the mike during PWD (though not a clue what to do) and a pull on Patterson's tequila. I think he's caught the DBT bug.

Clams- that pic of Cooley and Hood bathed in red sharing the mic is bad ass. You should make that your family's holiday card this year.

Fuckin A!! Can't wait to hear this one live for real.

Kinda shocking to see Matt doing his bill wyman/gary w. tallent statue routine. I didn't even know he had that routine in his repertoire.

Great show, great reviews, and great pics. Thanks all for sharing tidbits to help remember this show. It was going to be a historic gig in my opinion regardless of the election outcome. The shock of the actual result on Tuesday left many in a state of "Is this really real?" on Wednesday, and for me the drive from New York late in the day in the rain didn't help the mood, but DBT didn't wallow in shock or sadness or defeat, rather they took the stage, led by Cooley, like they were ready for the next fight, fighting for causes they still believe in, and then Patterson sent us home with the assertive reminder that, no matter what just happened, it's still fucking great to be alive. A cathartic experience.

Yes, this show was taped. It's a bit rough but it'll suffice. Maybe other copies will surface; I know I won't have time to track this for a few days at least. Here's an unedited sampler MP3 for now.

A few of my pics as well

PS - Union Transfer is one of my favorite venues now. First time there, and the vibe was great. I love these repurposed historic buildings. The lighting was great and it sounded good even up front.

Also, I sincerely regret not taping Kyle Craft and I hope there's stuff out there from him on this tour. As mentioned above, his last song and his response to the heckler was golden.

Wish I could have continued on to Richmond, another favorite town of mine, but I had other long-standing plans.

In the early 1900's it was a Union Pacific railroad freight depot (hence the name Union Transfer). And yes, along with World Cafe Live, it's my favorite venue in Philly.

I am just happy it wasn't at the Electric Factory this time out. I also loved that I watched the show from very close to Jay (with Clams) and for the second half (The Company I Keep>) from the balcony.

Loved the place. Spent the night on the rail of the lower balconies (raised about 2 '), was great, clear sightlines about 20' to where Cooley was standing... Overall all the venue reminded me of a slightly smaller version of the 930 Club with the bench seating in the balcony from the Ram's Head in Baltimore.

The nice beer selection didn't hurt either.
