The Bitter Southerner Interview with Patterson Hood

Great Interview with Patterson at the Star Bar.... from the website:

A LONG TALK WITH A FOUNDER OF ONE OF THE SOUTH'S MOST IMPORTANT BANDS

In three days, the Drive-By Truckers will release their 11th studio album, “American Band” — a strident, political powerhouse of a record that’s directly relevant to where our nation and the South find themselves today. We took one of the band’s two founding members — Patterson Hood — back to the place where the band first gained traction 20 years ago, Atlanta’s Star Community Bar. We had a long conversation about the history of DBT and, of course, the duality of the Southern thing. Today, we bring you that interview — and exclusive video of Hood performing “Ever South” from the new record, plus new video of a tune that goes all the way back to the band’s earliest performances.

"You put Booker T. Jones on a flag, and I'll fly that in my yard ..."

That was an incredible read. Never knew the reason behind Malone's exit, so that was an interesting bit.

Just a heads up that it's already been posted in the American Band 9/30/16 thread.

Not all the way through it yet but still might be the best DBT article I've ever read. Kudos to Patterson and the author, Chuck Reece. Great stuff, and beautifully presented too.

Great read.

What strikes me though. Those tales from the early days of DBT-dom - Cabbagetown, Star Bar etc sounds like ancient history when I read about it in articles like this one, but then I realize where I was myself at that time, and in relation to my own "timeline of musical awareness" (starting some time in the late 70s) it is all pretty "recent".

I did not expect a tip of the hat to Don or Larry Nix when I started reading that. Don has done some great work over the years.
I've thought a whole lot about the "beautiful mystery", as Patterson described it, surrounding the musical heritage of the midsouth. So many of those guys those guys and gals who made music in this region in the 1950's-1970's really were just high school friends or their dad's worked together or some shit. A lot of them turned out to be some of the greatest musicians and artists ever. It really is remarkable.
