American Band reviews

Post by Jack Flash »

Guess we'll start with mine, since as far as I can tell it's the only one up so far:

http://www.slantmagazine.com/music/revi ... rican-band

Hopefully it starts a trend of 4 1/2 star reviews.

Well done.

"...they've crafted a set of songs that are unassailable in their strength of purpose, sharpness of phrasing, and musical wallop."

"...American Band is concise, laser-focused, and brutally efficient, both musically and lyrically."

Nice work Jack! That was a great read, thank you.

I have the 9/10 Uncut review that I paid for on their app, but can't figure out how to post it. I have screen shots I can text someone if you have the skillz (and desire) to post.

Nice review Jeremy. I disagree with you on What it Means but that said your take is very well thought out and I get it, I just don't agree.

Don't know these guys, but another 9/10 review. Interesting take on some of the songs. Hadn't heard the F & F comparison to Mr. Tamborine Man before.

I'm not hearing the "Tambourine Man" thing at all. Go figure. What he described as "pseudo feminist" I called "typical Cooley ambiguity." I could try to deconstruct that but I think I'll stick w/ thinking that it's an interesting difference.

I can hear the Mr. Tambourine thing in the "don't mix your whites and the browns" line after the reviewer pointed it out.

Thanks MAB, that was sweet. Love hearing "the giddy Patterson laugh" - it's good for the soul.

Nice press, but there was probably a cringeworthy line per paragraph. The writing was really not my cup of tea. To say nothing of whatever the fuck "socialwebs" means.

I wasn't able to get beyond this:

Eleven carefully crafted ditties by the Dimmer Twins, aka the great Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood, inciting thought and argument from the likes of hapless, gun crazed so-called blue blood Americans, the Black Lives Matter contingent, and any other walking, breathing, cognizant human being that stops to smell the proverbial shit flower our great country is turning into.
Son, this ain't a dream no more, it's the real thing

As much as I want to love AB (and I've only heard the pre-release tracks so far), I just cannot imagine any conceivable way it can be as good as SRO, DD or TDS.

You're correct. American Band is very solid overall. It's definitely not one of their best in my opinion. It has quite a few weak tracks. I loved "What It Means" live but this version just doesn't do it for me. "Baggage" is also a little weak. I can't say there were any weak tracks on SRO, DD, TDS or ABAAC. I would put this on par with GGB which was a good, but overall so-so album.

I think it's basically impossible to compare them. It's a different lineup with 12+ more years of life experience setting out to accomplish different things.
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

For clarity, this is exactly what I'm expecting at this point. By way of comparison, I'm not looking to Springsteen to be putting out a Darkness On The Edge of Town anymore, a Wrecking Ball over a Working on a Dream is fine by me.

If American Band is in the league of Brighter Than Creation's Dark I'll be very happy, I'm sure.

I dunno. Based on what I've heard (live), nothing here is a skipper for me on the level of either of Isbell's ABAAC songs. It's hard to say for sure until I hear the final studio version, but I think it's likely their best since BTCD.

Springsteen was the best at capturing the plight of the everyman but for a number of reasons he's lost the ability to do that. DBT now does that in a way Bruce can't anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised if that is a side effect of being in a position where you can book an entire top floor in world class luxury hotels for you and your band when you are on tour. In order to be able write about everyman I guess you have to be around them.

While I agree it's not fair to compare them it is easy to compare them. It's the same as saying A Bigger Bang isn't as good as Sticky Fingers. Sure it's not fair, but that doesn't make it any less accurate. I think American Band is a great album, their best since A Blessing And A Curse. But it's not as good as SRO/DD/TDS. Maybe not a fair comparison, but accurate.
