Don't know these guys, but another 9/10 review. Interesting take on some of the songs. Hadn't heard the F & F comparison to Mr. Tamborine Man before.

I'm not hearing the "Tambourine Man" thing at all. Go figure. What he described as "pseudo feminist" I called "typical Cooley ambiguity." I could try to deconstruct that but I think I'll stick w/ thinking that it's an interesting difference.

As much as I want to love AB (and I've only heard the pre-release tracks so far), I just cannot imagine any conceivable way it can be as good as SRO, DD or TDS.

You're correct. American Band is very solid overall. It's definitely not one of their best in my opinion. It has quite a few weak tracks. I loved "What It Means" live but this version just doesn't do it for me. "Baggage" is also a little weak. I can't say there were any weak tracks on SRO, DD, TDS or ABAAC. I would put this on par with GGB which was a good, but overall so-so album.

I think it's basically impossible to compare them. It's a different lineup with 12+ more years of life experience setting out to accomplish different things.

I dunno. Based on what I've heard (live), nothing here is a skipper for me on the level of either of Isbell's ABAAC songs. It's hard to say for sure until I hear the final studio version, but I think it's likely their best since BTCD.

Springsteen was the best at capturing the plight of the everyman but for a number of reasons he's lost the ability to do that. DBT now does that in a way Bruce can't anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised if that is a side effect of being in a position where you can book an entire top floor in world class luxury hotels for you and your band when you are on tour. In order to be able write about everyman I guess you have to be around them.

While I agree it's not fair to compare them it is easy to compare them. It's the same as saying A Bigger Bang isn't as good as Sticky Fingers. Sure it's not fair, but that doesn't make it any less accurate. I think American Band is a great album, their best since A Blessing And A Curse. But it's not as good as SRO/DD/TDS. Maybe not a fair comparison, but accurate.
