OH HELL YES! New album talk makes this Heathen smile. I'll be on the lookout for new material, which I'm sure is still at least a few months down the road, and will get back on my lyrics work as soon as recordings go public. Fuck, I love this band!

I know I'll probably never get it but I would love to see The Distance and Tough To Let Go on the next record. Especially The Distance. OK, I think this post could be a thread hijacker so I'll leave it at that. I'm just excited.

While planning for The Bitter Southerner’s upcoming music column, I played “What It Means” for Dr. Joycelyn Wilson, an honest-to-god professor of hip-hop who will write that column periodically for us. She heard these lyrics: “If you say it wasn't racial when they shot him in his tracks / Well, I guess that means that you ain't black, it means that you ain't black / I mean, Barack Obama won and you can choose where to eat / But you don't see too many white kids lying bleeding on the street.” Joyce said, “I’m going to teach that in my class next semester.” I replied, “But it isn’t hip-hop.” She replied, “Yes, it is.” Ah, yes, I thought. Subject matter trumps musical style. So, there you have it, DBT. You officially recorded a hip-hop song.

When we left our heroes last week:

"What It Means" is where it is because it has to follow "Ever South". Those songs are each other's mirror image. Patterson would be well-served to find a sympathetic hip-hop producer to put beats behind those two vocals.
