Wow, great find Smitty - thanks for posting this. Vintage DBT and Cooley sleeping it off in the car
Re: Vintage DBT
Wow. Never knew Patterson looked so much like Jason back in the day... cool stuff.
Re: Vintage DBT
Thanks Smitty. I liked Better Off Without - I hadn't heard it before.

I think he looks like Bobby Flay

Re: Vintage DBT
Very nice find, Smitty. I've also been enjoying watching the footage of Guadalcanal Diary, Drivin' n' Cryin' and Vic Chesnutt from the same program.
Re: Vintage DBT
Cool. Not enough super early DBT stuff out there.

Re: Vintage DBT
Thanks for the post. It's a good possibility that I might have been there that night. I can't remember honestly. It was around that time this was filmed when I first saw a DBT show. I used to hang out at the bar underneath The High Hat, a place called The Ratskeller, and would walk up to see bands all the time. A personal favorite was Neal Pattman. Anyways I was especially interested in seeing DBT after I saw a PH interview on TV and heard Living Bubba. My roommate at the time had also heard the song Nine Bullets and made this huge deal about how great a song it was. While skimming through the Flag Pole I saw DBT was playing The High Hat one weekend night I told him I was going to walk up and see them and he needed to go. He thought it was a great idea until showtime came when he was too busy trying to pick up some a girl. I told him priorities but he didn't listen and I walked up stairs. Still all these years later still going to see them whenever possible.
Re: Vintage DBT
Patterson definitely looks like Jason.
I can't get over how much this actually sounds like listening to Gangstabilly.
Cooley passed out in the car is fucking priceless.

Not to nitpick Iowan, but Patterson is Patterson, Jason looks/looked like him. Passing out in the car used to be my signature move.

Right, right. I would agree.
And I've been known to pass out in the car a time or two myself.

Re: Vintage DBT
I always love hearing the old stuff. Great find. Anyone else notice that Patterson's voice sounds a touch different from the GB-AAW era than it does from SRO forward?
It's also fun to see Patterson from way back. That guy could go rob a bank tomorrow, then shave his beard, and then walk though a police precinct without being pinched. He's like a different person without it.
Finally, Neff is such a pro.

Re: Vintage DBT
Our voices change as we age. Patterson was 37 when he recorded SRO. We often forget that when he first came on the radar of most of us he was in his late thirties.
Singing is kind of like pitching in baseball. The younger guys have the great fastballs, etc.. but the older guys know how to set up a batter, change speeds. Singing is the same way. You have the range when you are young but as you get older you know more about delivering a song.

Re: Vintage DBT
That was really enjoyable to watch Smitty. Thanks for your efforts .
I've always really liked Miss You Gone. It was cool to hear the tale end of that one with the whole (well almost whole) band. I'm gonna have to search around to see if I can find more shows from that era. I like the acoustic rawness to it and really like the incorporating of the mandolin.

Saw an old still photograph of David Hood the other evening in this documentary from his younger days and he looked identical to Patterson. Not really that surprising I suppose but still pretty cool.

A beer at the next NY show to the first person who can tell me the band who is on the ad that opens the first video.

Re: Vintage DBT
I heard an interview of PH by Mojo Nixon on Sirius 60 Outlaw Country for Heat Lightening where he discussed seeing this video and not remembering the song. He apparently reconstructed it for the new album. I had seen this show referenced before (Cooley passed out in car) but did not realize it was the same one until now.
Looks like Hoods were playing a frat house. Wonder where. Papa Hood looking really groovy. Costume party?

The Chukker and Tip Top. That brings back memories, amazingly enough considering the brain cells killed there. The Chukker in particular had quite a history.

Younger pictures of David could pass for Patterson.
