The Distance

Post by potatoeater »

So I dug around a bit and can't seem to find the lyrics, or much discussion at all about this wonderful song on 3DD. I listen to this song quite often. I hope it ends up on a record store day special or something. I want a studio or mixer version so bad I can't stand it. I know it is a song dedicated to the 3DD community. I used one live taper version I prefer to listen to and worked out these lyrics from it. They may need some minor corrections. I am throwing this post together real quick since I have to get my ass to sleep for work in five hours. I know it isn't the newest song, but is anyone else as excited about this song as I am?
standing in the trenches
swinging for the fences
knocked out and clocked in
i aint coming to my senses
from religion or expenses
or the rungs/wrongs that i have ?knocked in?
you take the best you have to offer
and improvise the rest
do it again tomorrow
keep your hands out of the coffers
and always do your best
and we'll probably let you follow

its about three hours til daylight
packed and loaded for the drive

you gotta know who you can trust
and whose ass you should bust
and it's hard to tell the difference
when they put it to the test
when you lead with the left
what it takes to go the distance

what it takes to go the distance
when you live so far from home
determination and persistence
when the first punch has been thrown

our forefathers used to brave
the mighty ocean's wave
for the things that -?worked and not them?-
they traveled far away from home
without cellular phones
while the dragons swam beside them
they built cities shore to shore
for the grandkids to explore
with the northern star to guide them
ive traveled all across this land
in our econoline van
did our best to stand beside them

passing out at the party
waking up alone
what it takes to got the distance
when you live so far from home
I'd like to say I'm sorry, I'd like to say I'm sorry, I'd like to say I'm sorry...BUT I AIN'T SORRY!

This is the best copy, to my ears, publicly available. If you have or know of anything better PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE hook me up. Two years since they had this song in the mix, as far as I know. Unfortunate. I think it is great. Come on Fine Print 2 or a record store day special with this on it.

Shame on Patterson for teasing us with this song and then locking it away in the vault!
