Surrender Under Protest sounds amazing. Agree with a lot of that extra long Cole Younger post.

As a general matter, cops shooting black people (or white people) isn't a political issue. It's a human issue. And if it's a political issue, why does Patterson overtly support the party/president that's been drone bombing civilians in 7 countries where we have no business having a military presence? If the lesser of two evils is still killing people, it's not really that lesser.

"All them politicians they're all lyin' sacks of shit" is the old school DBT politics that I support. I wish DBT would be careful these days falling into the false choice of Red vs. Blue. Gary Johnson 2016

It's the Red vs. Blue...my side vs. your side thing that I don't understand. I don't see where intentional divisiveness is gong to get us anywhere.

Wrong thread, I know, but hey, he started it.

My 2 cents: This election is no longer about Democrat v. Republican, red v. blue, conservative v. liberal or anything remotely like that. It's boiled down to this: Either you're for trump or you're against him. I don't care if you think Clinton is the anti-Christ on either or both of political or character grounds. Trump is simply a new and different level of awfulness never before seen in major or "legitimate" American politics and he needs to be completely and thoroughly repudiated. There are 3 ways to be against Trump: Don't vote, vote for Clinton or vote for someone other than Clinton or Trump. So the way I see it, a vote for Johnson is a vote against Trump and I say welcome to the club, y'all.

If you're torn between Trump and Johnson, or you just will not vote for Clinton under any circumstances, then yes vote for Johnson, Stein, or whoever. I do ask that you stop and consider the fact that vote for Johnson is also a vote against Hillary, who's the only legitimate threat to a Trump presidency. This may sound cynical, but it accomplishes nothing more than making you feel good about sticking to your principles. I'm afraid this election is going to be a lot closer than initially expected and being that there are only two viable candidates, I think a vote for any down ticket candidate is as effective at stopping Trump as staying home. If the signs weren't pointing to a deceptively close election or if the stakes weren't so high, then I might vote green, but I think we need every possible vote to keep from ever having to mutter the words "Trump Administration".

So I went on the hunt this morning for copies of each of the tracks from the American Band album. Along the way I kept track of which ones I found and where. I decided I would share my findings here with everyone for quick reference and for those who maybe have not heard them all yet. The only track I can not seem to find is Kinky Hypocrite. I don't believe there is a recording publicly available for it yet. If I am wrong, PLEASE correct me.

This album is going to be amazing! Once They Banned Imagine and Darkened Flags On The Cusp Of Dawn are probably my favorites so far.

Thanks, I saw it requested in the new songs thread after I put it here. Just trying to do my part. I found myself missing oneofthesedays.org during my hunt. I wish I had a copy of Kinky Hypocrite. I'm waiting for smitty to come along with a version of it from 1992 taken off an old cassette tape he found in a Memphis sewer..

If I was guessing I would say some have just never paid attention to the political songs in the past. Others have probably overlooked it and some are probably just paying no attention to lyrics whatsoever.
You could put together a monstrous DBT playlist that has nothing to do with politics.
I don't go to the facebook page so I have no idea what is being posted.
I left both DBT Facebook groups I that I "liked" or was a member of mostly because of all the arguing about who didn't know anything about the band, who is or is not a "real fan" (the fact that adults even say things like that makes me laugh) etc. it just became tedious so I left. I have t been sorry for one minute about that.

As far as the outrage or whatever a person wants to call it over the band's political views and people being surprised by them, I don't think very many people are surprised that they are politically liberal. I mean it's never been a secret. Maybe a few new fans are surprised by it. I think, and I'm basing this on my own reaction and the reactions of people I know who are fans of the band and also more politically conservative, that most of what is being discussed about the press release is not about the band's politics but about the tone of the statements in that press release.

I don't know what kind of stuff they get from some of their fans about their politics. Maybe it's bad and that's why they said what they said but for myself and some others they didn't get the "fuck you if you don't like it. You can take a hike." Tone of the whole thing. Like I said, Patterson and Cooley may get stopped by people a lot who want to take them to task over their politics. I don't know. But I personally was a bit surprised and frankly put off by how needlessly (as far as I'm concerned anyway) confrontational the feel of that whole press release was.

I've been a me,ever here for a good while now. Been a Trucker fan a lot longer than that. They're my favorite band by miles. ive gone to their shows for years and bought all of their records. I've never been shy about my own political leanings or the fact that they mostly run counter to those of the band and most people here. My attitude has always been they have as much right to their opinions as I do to mine and if I was so immature as to let an artists politics keep me from enjoying their work, I would pretty much miss out on all of the great bands. That would be a needless shame. I've never cared when the band makes political statements in song or from the stage. It's their perogative and I knew what I was getting. I have occasionally disagreed pretty strongly with how some points were made because I just don't think anger is persuasive nor is it very enjoyable to be around.

I've never had any doubt where the guys stood. I don't think most fans do. But I didn't understand why Patterson needed to say, "we've never cared about being everybody's favorite band and if you need to leave that's fine." What does that mean? Does it just mean he's tired of taking flack from some fans about his politics? If so I get that. But a lot of people have taken it as, "hey if you don't agree with us we really don't want you anyway."

I don't know who Cooley is speaking of specifically when talks about wanting to make people mad. That's pretty hard for me to understand just from a everyday standpoint of not getting why anybody would go out of their way to try and have a conflict with anybody but also, why would you make such a point of flipping fans of yours the bird? Is he talking to all fans who don't agree with him and the band? Is talking about people who have heckled them in the past ( I find it hard to imagine this has happened much for the simple fact that it's pretty clear where they stand and if a person had a huge issue with it why would they buy tickets to a show?), I have no idea. But it seems unnecessary and like he's going to trouble to have a problem with part of the fan base.

As far as what he said about the gun culture, and to me this was the worst part, he's just unbelievably off base there. People who like guns like them because they are white supremacists? Seriously? I'm sorry but that is not only wrong, it's ridiculous. I'm from and live in the epicenter of the gun culture. Not only am I not a white supremacist, I don't know anybody who is. I don't even know of anybody who is. I can't believe he even said that.

Bottom line, I don't have a problem with them not being on the same page as me politically. I don't think most people care about that. I don't know what kind of experiences they've had in the past with backlash for their politics. My only issue is, a lot of us love the band and their politics does nothing to diminish that love. I respect them for speaking out for the things they believe in whether I agree or not. I just think an individual or a band can make political statements in no uncertain terms without being an asshole about it.
I could not have said it better myself. It is not the fact that the songs are political, but that the comments were made in the press release. I have been a huge fan since Dec Day and just found myself disappointed I guess that they felt the need to do that.

I whole-heartedly agree. It's very obvious that most artists swing to the left and that's never stopped me from listening to their music, but I'm a little disappointed that a band that I love so much felt the need to flip folks like me the bird.

Oh well, I'll still be front row at the first ave with a PBR in my hand this September...

This a a band of real people. It's not a huge corporate entity that makes so much cash for the puppeteers that every word is sanitized, focus-grouped, and massaged. They do things they've later regretted (one private gig comes to mind), and they say they screwed up. We all do the former, fewer of us do the latter. They have a funny name and are constantly labeled "southern rock" - both of these have probably robbed them of audience. Uninformed, lazy writers have called them apologists because of SRO/3AI and the Duality of the Southern Thing.....thing. They have an ex-member who is rightfully kicking ass and getting his due, writing songs that connect to people viscerally. They've been at it a loooong time and want to connect with a wider audience too, I'm sure.

I don't blame them for stirring it up. Shit gets stale, passion and newness keep songs fresh. Anger, planting your flag, and unambiguous stances stoke the fire of creativity and allow songs to come forth that stack up with their very, very best. Plant that flag, motherfuckers, and let the songs spring forth!

Is "If you don't like it, you can leave" a great thing to say to fans? Nope. Could it have been said better? Yep. But these folks are real people. I don't get the NRA = white supremacy thing either, but I'm not a member so I don't really care that my org has been called out (rightfully or wrongly). But I very much care about gun violence and the fact that some in the NRA who think we should all be allowed to have Uzis helped hand the Republican party's nomination to a scary fucking Cheeto. Does the insistence of the press release entrench the sides even more, so we "remain each other's other" even longer? I sure hope not....and don't think it does.

The press release talks about exploring "such pressing issues as race, income inequality, the NRA, deregulation, police brutality, Islamophobia, and the plague of suicides and opiod abuse." Yes, explore that shit. We may not all agree with every point or every song, but there is some crazy stuff going on right now and it's time to talk about it. My nephew at UVA saw DBT in C'ville a few months back and texted me about the show, mentioning the Black Lives Matter sign on the stage. There are some assholes that tarnish the name/reputation of the BLM movement, but something that surprised me at first (that DBT would put that sign on stage) now seems normal. That's good. First black president - now normal. That's really good. DBT is talking provocatively about race and other hot-button issues.....thank God they are, because talking about it (really talking, not shouting) is what will allow us to see the sides and hopefully find some common ground.

Something tells me there wasn't a lot of sitting around asking "what should we write about this time?" The songs came from the headlines, their own experiences, and the experiences of people they knew. Our band has struck a nerve! They've made us uncomfortable! They're busy being born! Fuck yeah.

If one of the purposes of this album is to open up dialogue amongst fans, it's certainly done that, along with creating a fair amount of dischord. I've been following the discussion on FB but have rarely participated. It was only a matter of time but I figured some fan would eventually accuse them of selling out with American Band. So, why would an artist wait until their eleventh album to sell out and even then, wouldn't they make an album that's meant to placate as much as their fan base as possible, rather than record a polarizing record (one that most folks still haven't even heard) that has the potential to alienate fans? Maybe I'm in the minority but I surely wouldn't call that "selling out".

Great post! Ramonz is my hero. It's just a damn shame he hangs out with that Flea character...

Ramonz, do you have a new source or something? Always reliable ramonz (meant in a very positive way) all of a sudden has stepped up his game to rock star proportions. Impressive recent run good sir! I look forward to more.

There's about a million cliches in the business world to the effect that when people move away from what they know they're setting themselves up for some painful lessons. What the Truckers know are subtle, sensitive, shaded, nuanced portraits of real people and real situations. I have some guesses about why they chose to announce the new album the way they did, but clearly they stepped out of their comfort zone (edgy as that zone already was) and nuance, subtlety and big lessons from small recognizable examples all got left behind in favor of broad, attention getting (seeking?) statements. So it was virtually inevitable that there'd be some toe stubbing along the way. The insanity that ensued was well more than an equal and opposite reaction but to some extent it was predictable and is part of the band's learning curve. If there's one thing this band does well it's to learn from experience and keep improving. I think that by the fall tour all of the fans who hung around (which eventually will be 99% of their existing audience) will be glad they did.

Possibly relevant. I understand that this says way more about me and where I live than about the other person in this story but in this case that's the point: I went to pick up our dog at the boarding place today and the woman behind the counter was wearing a t shirt that said only "NRA" and nothing else in not very big letters (but they were yellow on dark blue - it was more design than a desire to whisper). My immediate thought was that it can't be THE NRA, there must be some other organization w/ the same initials (around here I immediately tried thinking of colleges and universities) and boy, must they be annoyed w/ the way that's turned out. But sure enough when the woman turned around, the design was an American flag made out of ammunition and the "national rifle association" was spelled out underneath. I was truly surprised. I've seen typical gun and NRA related bumper stickers on plenty of cars, but I'm pretty sure that's the first pro-NRA tshirt I've ever seen. I suspect the experience of many readers of this thread is quite different  I wanted to ask her what kind of reactions, if any, she had been getting, but I couldn't figure out a way to do that w/out entering into dangerous waters so I didn't say anything (which I suspect is the most common reaction anyway). I'm not going to draw any grand lessons or inferences from one sighting, but I do think it was unusual enough to mention.
