Did it have the sticker on front saying that it was the red vinyl?

I've probably listened to the album 12-15 times and Ramon Casiano, Filthy and Fried and Kinky Hypocrite are still the standout tracks for me.
Guns Of Umpqua has been the one growing on me.

I didn't look, but I went to look at my order on the site and it clearly says it was the red vinyl.

It's actually dull red with black smudges and streaks. Is that a thing or am I special? Plays ok so far.

What's nice about any DBT album I've ever first listened to is....songs over time really grow on me. The one that has for me is "When the Sun Don't Shine". At first I wasn't a big fan but where it fits in the album and the simplicity of it really works for me. The flip side for me is that there are never really any songs over time I just grow to really dislike. To me that is the test of a great album. I love where the band is at mentally in their writing and want them to pump out like 2 more albums right now in a row lol.

Day 3 for me with this album, and now Guns of Umpqua and Once They Banned Imagine are now up their with WiM and Kinky as my faves. Least fav: Ever South. It will likely grow on me, but musically right now for me it is a bit blah.

I love American Band. I'm not sure where it ranks, and while it's probably not their best, it's the one where I'm most proud of them. I was over the moon about English Oceans, mainly because of the AMOUNT (and also quality) of Cooley compositions. He's arguably more brilliant than ever on this record, especially lyrically. Once They Banned Imagine is preposterously good. I think as long as the song ratio remains approximately half and half, this version of the band is going to continue to churn out fantastic stuff.

You've heard the idiom, "if you love something, set it free; if it doesn't come back, hunt it down and kill it"? Kinda like that.

After all the posts I've seen about it (several by Pickle himself), I was hoping the pickle lighter would show up in the Nuci's auction. At the very least, I think the pickle lighter has earned being the subject of a Ben Lamb wood cut and/or Wes Freed poster.

Several more listens over the weekend and this is a really, really solid album. I have no intention of ranking it amongst the rest of the records yet.

My favorite tracks are the rockers: Baggage, Darkened Flags, Ramon Casiano, Surrender Under Protest. The slower ones are growing on me.

I've come to the realization that I really, really, REALLY don't like piano in DBT songs. More on that later.
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

Very curious to hear that when you're ready. I've thought for a while that if they let Jay go nuts on the piano, widespread-style, it would be veddy interesting to see what that did for them. I know they don't fit into the classic "jam band" category, but some of patterson's extended vocal/story/spoken word songs share the same DNA as extended jammers....just on the words part rather than the instrumental part.

I think Jay (and Jason before him) adds a lot with the piano.

So many damn great songs on American Band!!!

Post by wordmeester »

Each time I listen, I find another "favorite." Caught Ramon Casino, What It Means, Surrender in NY couple of months ago but can't wait to get up close for these and more... Jay makes Ever South sound like Spooner is back, Once They Banned Imagine is a sneaky great mofo (great chorus Cooley, a real ear worm)... this release is a reminder of how music can shine a light on society's cockroaches and hopefully start a dialogue for change. Now, if the big guns like Springsteen, U2 and others stopped playing greatest hits shows and picked up the flag and joined the fight... the light would get turned up even brighter -- and maybe the powers that be would set aside their cynicism and do what's right for all of us...

Damn, American Band's got me fired up!

I too am interested to hear the reasoning there. I for one really liked DBT before Jay Gonzalez but had other bands I put up with them as far as appreciation went. After Jay joined the band and his contributions in particular this album, now I'm sure no other band is on their level for me. The piano and keys sound he has brought has made me truly love this band. Without his keys sound I wouldn't feel that way. I guess I have an opposite mentality with their sound. I hope Jay's key sounds are an even larger part in future recordings of the band.

To be clear, I really love the songs with the Hammond or Wurlitzer sound, just not the piano.

I too love the Hammond and Wurlitzer. However, I like the Stones more than Procol Harum. More piano=more better

Could have been, but (just personally speaking) I don't mind a new thread to read/discuss the topic. Of course, if everyone else disagrees, I guess the Monkster's opinion is moot.

I'll just add my opinion after somewhere between 50 and 100 spins (it's the only album I've been listening to in the car for 3 or 4 weeks now and my car has an incredible sound system so all of the instruments really shine through and can be heard)...Anyhow, I didn't like it much at first, it grew on me though it took quite a few spins. Though I feel they would not have really fit this particular album, I DO miss the "First Air Of Autumn" type tunes and I also have to say that I really miss the "country gold" of songs like "Cartoon Gold"...I miss the steel pedal.

I do like the keys/piano. I think they make "Once They Banned Imagine" so much better vs. what it would be without them. "Baggage" is a song I liked more at first than I do after many listens. When I first listened, I did not know who the song was about and (for whatever reason) I liked it better not knowing. No idea why, maybe I'm just odd (well hell, I KNOW I'm odd)....

For me, "American Band" is not on par with the brilliance of "Decoration Day" or "The Dirty South" (then again, what is?)....but it's solid. I would put it on par with, say, "Go Go Boots"...an album that I personally liked quite a bit, but I also realize that it is an album that can be a bit divisive among DBT fans. Overall solid effort. I like it overall more-so than I did "English Oceans".

One of the Mods merged this post into the thread, I didn't say a thing about it. You know what, and I'll say this politely as possible, just as I've done in the other threads that were duplicates (or contained duplicate posts) but I'd sure appreciate it if you'd get off my back. Thanks.
