Cooley Bird

Post by GuitarManUpstairs »

Hey y'all,

I am pretty new to the 3DD site and was never very involved in 9B so I don't know if this subject has been covered ad nauseum or not but I am curious what anyone knows about the origins, myths, legends, evolutionary history, etc... for the famous Cooley Bird. Is it an idea born from the unreal mind of its name sake and then visually conceptualized by Wes Freed or did Wes come up with it and it then somehow aquired Cooley's name? I find Wes' artwork and DBT music go hand in hand and the experience would not be the same one without the other, so I am as interested in it as with any other aspect of the band. Anyone have any insight and or comments?
Never going back to Buttholeville. (Good luck with that!)

I know it was originally called Eleanor, then the Death Bird, and finally Cooley Bird.

very nice El norte, very nice

I have these stickers on the back of both our cars. People frequently ask "What is that?" and I go "It's a Cooley death bird" and then they just look at me for a second or two and go "Oh" and then I just give them a nod.

I went and got this last month and now have to explain it. So far I've been asked if it's the Bacardi emblem or a dragon. Most think it's a dragon.

Wasn't the 'crowmingo' in there somewhere as well?
This is like asking me to dance to the sound of wolves mauling a reindeer.

I recently viewed the exhibit of Salvador Dali fairytale illustrations, on display at the Columbia (SC) Museum of Art, and one of the images in particular reminded me of DBT/Freed art and the Cooley Bird. This illustration is actually entitled "The Toad":
