The 9th rule of Rock n Roll

Post by linkous »

I was reading an interview with Robert Forster, singer and guitarist with Australian band The Go-Betweens. A few years ago he wrote a book called The Ten Rules of Rock n Roll. Rule no 9 was place the worst song on the album as the second last track.

Just a fun thread, but does anybody agree?

Gangstabilly - Buttholeville
Pizza Deliverance - Zoloft
SRO - DISC 1 Zip City, DISC 2 Greenville to Baton Rouge
Decoration Day - Decoration Day
TDS - Lookout Mountain
A Blessing and a Curse - A Blessing and a Curse
BTCD - A Ghost to Most
TBTD - The Flying Wallendas
GGB - Pulaski
English Oceans - First Air of Autumn

Doesn't apply to DBT, but thanks for the heads up on the book. I used to be pretty into this album by the same guy back when it was released.

Yeah, its a great album. The interview with Forster which mentioned the book was accompanying Uncut magazines review of his new album, Songs To Play. It was their album of the month, rating 9/10. Think the album is due for release in a few weeks.

I found this listing on the interwebz. It must be out of order.

The 10 rules of rock and roll are:
1. Never follow an artist who describes his or her work as 'dark'
2. The second-last song on every album is the weakest
3. Great bands tend to look alike
4. Being a rock star is a 24-hour-a-day job
5. The band with the most tattoos has the worst songs
6. No band does anything new on stage after the first 20 minutes
7. The guitarist who changes guitars on stage after every third number is showing you his guitar collection
8. Every great artist hides behind their manager
9. Great bands don't have members making solo albums
10. The three-piece band is the purest form of rock and roll expression
By the time you drop them I'll be gone
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life

Just checked the article again, and it doesnt actually say which rule number it is, just that "one of the rules" is "The second-last song on every album is the weakest". Don't know where I got no 9 from, presumably I got confuddled because 9 is second last number of 10.
Thanks for pointing that out, and for posting the other rules which I did not know. Forster is an extremely intelligent, well read bookish kind of guy. A bit of a wag, with a dry, arch sense of humour. Some of that is no doubt reflected in these rules.

You don't do enough reading. Silly yes, but there is much greater stupidity out there.

just randomly thought of some of my favorite records, and their penultimate songs:

I Often Dream Of Trains - "I Often Dream Of Trains" (nope)
Come On Die Young - "Christmas Steps" (no way... probably the best one)
Meddle - "Seamus" (he's onto something here)
American Water - "Honk If You're Lonely" (another correct target)
The Royal Scam - "Everything You Did" (on a tear)
Dopethrone - "Dopethrone" (nope)
Alien Lanes - "Always Crush me" (an outlier, but a great song)
Closer - "The Eternal" (nope)
Liberty Belle & The Black Diamond Express - "Palm Sunday (On Board The S.S. Within)" (yes, and it's a Forster song  )
Zuma - "Cortez The Killer" (nope, best song on the LP)

"Take Me to the Speedway" pisses on that rule then sets it on fire

I'll try (leaving out DBT) with some not mentioned yet

Exile - "Shine A Light" - oh HELL no
Sticky Fingers - "Dead Flowers" - are you kidding me?
Boys and Girls in America - "Girls Like Status" - nope
American Beauty - "Attics of My Life" - Ok, I can buy it here
Vitalogy - "Immortality" - arguably the best track
AM - "Blue Eyed Soul" - nope
Trace - "Too Early" - probably
The Band - "Unfaithful Servant" - can buy it
Full Moon Fever - "A Mind With a Heart of It's Own" - nope
Shake Your Money Maker - "Struttin' Blues" - I guess

These probably aren't my 10 favorite albums, but they came immediately to mind.

4/10 on the theory

Actually, the second to last track is "Chillout Tent", which is a resounding YES. Girls Like Status is a bonus track on one of the imports (Australia, maybe?).

Huh.

The only copy I've ever had ended with "Arms & Hearts" and "Girls Like Status" was right before it. "Southtown Girls" and "Chillout Tent" were prior to those. Never realized it was an import or special edition. Bought it off Amazon or itunes in 2008.

It's a good song on an album that doesn't have a skipper. Someone has to come in last.

this theorem works pretty well for Sonic Youth, at least for these records:

"Kissability" (Daydream Nation)
"Marilyn Moore" (EVOL)
"Scooter + Jinx" (Goo)

You don't like Chillout Tent? Or just think it's the weakest track on there? It is an awfully strong record but I'd pick something else to come in last.

As they say on Facebook, "It's complicated":
10 "Chillout Tent" - 3:42
11 "Southtown Girls" (Finn, Kubler) - 5:10

Bonus tracks on Japanese edition

12 "Against the Wind" (Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band Cover) - 5:17
13 "Stuck Between Stations" (Acoustic) - 4:13

Bonus tracks on Australian edition

12 "For Boston" - 3:17
13 "Girls Like Status" - 3:08
14 "Arms and Hearts" - 3:51
15 "American Music" (Violent Femmes cover) - 3:47

Bonus tracks on U.S. iTunes edition

12 "Girls Like Status" - 3:08
13 "Arms and Hearts" - 3:51

I must have bought it on itunes then.

I had no clue that was a different version. I also didn't know that they covered "Against the Wind", "American Music, and did "For Boston".
