The New Cooley Song

Post by heartbreaker1976 »

Here's what I've got :)
1st and last verses I'm pretty good on...middle 2 not so much...

New cooley song

https://archive.org/download/dbt2015-03 ... ke.t12.mp3
Verse 1:
It all started with a border
And that’s still where it is today
Someone killed Ramon Casiano
And the killer got away
Down by the sister cities river
2 boys with way more pride than sense
One would fall and one would prosper
Never forced to make amends

Verse 2:
He became a border agent
?
With creative deportation?
Misled angle by the case????
His bullets ran the operation?
?
They’re ammasing at the border
Chinese troops and terrorists

Verse 3:
He had the makings of a leader
I was certain of the man ????
He made me feel the worlds a ???
Out to get him if it can?
? Triggers pull the fingers???
A Bullet would rather fight than win???
He died with little emotion???
Likely blinded by his sin???

Verse 4:
It all started with a border
And that’s still where it is today
Down by the sister cities river
What for sure no one can say
But killings been the bullets business
Since back in 1931
Someone killed Ramon Casiano
And Ramon’s still not dead enough

Rocking tune! Great to see Cooley's songwriting mojo is still alive and well after EO.

I'm going to note this one more time for the record and then wait for the world to catch up to me: I believe based on what he says in interviews and on stage, Cooley is the radical of the band.

If you don't believe me, just ask Judge R. Goatfucker Moore.

I really like it. I would probably be saying more but the sound quality isn't the greatest for a first listen. That's not a criticism for criticism's sake. I'm just saying that if I had been in the room while it was being played I would probably be on here jumping up and down about it. I really like it.

It sounded a lot better than this live, that song was easily the highlight of the night in a setlist that wasn't full of too many surprises.

My initial thought was to wait until it was released on an eventual studio recording, or until hearing it live, but I couldn't resist after having read the accolade in this thread. Instant classic!

I have to add that it seems to me that Cooley is exploring some new territory songwriting wise. Several of his tracks on EO (the title track, first air, natural light) and now this one, I would say stand out from his earlier stuff which I regard as more genre-typic; be it bar-room boogies, country tunes, or Stones-que rockers.

Listening to this I can't help but think back to all the thematically linked Hood and Cooley songs and think about a possible pairing of Hood's "What it Means" and this one... Certainly looks like the next album has the potential to be another great one!

Lyrically: I am really excited to see Cooley add to this band's Historical Assholes canon of songs, and this guy's life is one whale of a story.
Musically: Sounds to me like "Drinking Coke and Eating Ice" became this song.

How the hell have so many of us missed this? Cooley and the band absolutely knock this one out of the park. I am imagining the joyous revelry down front at any show when they play this. Jay's organ playing takes it to the point of ecstasy. Goddamn I love this band. It's fuckin' great to be alive!!!

The "cross shaped swimming pools" line from "First Air of Autumn" matches the imagery ("giant screens with skies exploding...") at the end of "Drinking Coke...". I wonder if that line didn't morph out of the same song as well.

I was at this show and loved the new song. Granted, I couldn't quite catch the lyrics at the time, but I knew it was a rocker at least. So glad somebody taped this. Can't wait to see what the official lyrics are, but so far, so great!

It all started with a border
And that’s still where it is today
Someone killed Ramon Casiano
And the killer got away
Down by the sister cities’ river
Two boys with way more pride than sense
One would fall and one would prosper
Never forced to make amends

He became a border agent
And supplemented what he made
With creative deportation
And missing ammo by the case
Since Bullet ran the operation
There’s hardly been a man of sense
That ain’t amassing at the border
From Chinese troops to terrorists

He had the making of a leader
Of a certain kind of man
Who need to feel the worlds against ‘em
Out to get ‘em if it can
Men whose triggers pull their fingers
Men who would rather fight than win
United in a revolution
Like in mind and like in skin

It all started with a border
And that’s still where it is today
Down by the sister cities’ river
What for sure no one can say
But killing’s been the Bullet’s business
Since back in 1931
Someone killed Ramon Casiano
And Ramon still ain’t dead enough
