In Praise of the 40 Watt

Post by Kudzu Guillotine »

I've seen 2 or 3 shows there over the years but so far, no Truckers. I do hope to amend that someday.

Great article, thanks. So the 40 Watt has a capacity of 500 huh? I've seen that many in there 15 minutes after doors open on Night 3 of Homecoming lol.

Agree. Three best places I have seen the band are those two and belly up in solona beach. (Stubbs outdoors is a close 4th).

Never been to Tips, but Stubbs is a great venue. Along with the 40 Watt my other two favorites are 1st Ave in Minneapolis and the venerable Metro in Chicago.

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing the fire marshalls sign set at something like 720 or something like that.

I was standing in line on night one last year. I usually beat the rest of my crew to Athens by a day and I was on the phone with my sister who was coming up with my wife and brother in law the next day. She asked me what I was doing and I told her I was about to walk in the 40 Watt and said, "you know, my favorite place in the world other than Sanford Stadium."

Tips is my hands down favorite. The 40 Watt is great, but never thought it was a particularly great venue when it came to sound.

The 40 Watt is a great little room but I always thought the allure was more about it's fabled history, not the room itself (as it's changed locations several times). Regardless, it's always a treat to see the Truckers in such a small venue!

Wife and I had our first kiss at the 40 Watt. I'm a fan (of the venue and her). Also saw the Truckers there for the first time at a Merle Haggard birthday tribute show. Lot of great memories in that room.

Have they invested in any actual lighting equipment yet?
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

Not really. The great sound and lighting is at the GA Theater. The 40 Watt a feel to it though and really runs like a well oiled machine. All the best clubs feel that way to me, First Ave., Metro and some of the newer places like The Pageant in St. Louis and Lincoln Hall in Chicago have the same kind of vibe.

I'd be remiss if I didn't put Cain's Ballroom Tulsa in TC's list of the , well oiled, vibe venues. It's history may put it at the top of the list. Just a stripped down old dancehall with all the ghosts swirling thru on the spring loaded floor. An amazing place.

We had a conversation with the elusive Duck last evening. I think it had been several years and he was literally right next to us as we mentioned his name wondering where he might be. Good to speak with the Duck.
