New Cooley Song - 218 To Denver
Joey Thomas over on a DBT Facebook page (not sure if he's a member on here) just posted this video of a new Cooley song listed on the setlist as "218 To Denver". I'm still trying to decipher some of the lyrics, but it sounds great.

Flight 218 to Denver
Strange how I remember
Wondering who in Denver
Still breaks hearts on paper
And takes time to write

Hey - I like that song! Nice chord progression and finger picking from Cooley.
By the time you drop them I'll be gone
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life

Thanks -
Mr. Cooley whipped this out at his show in Athens Georgia on Friday evening as well. Mr. Cooley told a little bit about the story on how the song became to be.
Mr. Cooley was in the airport (not sure if it was ATL or wherever) but he was heading to a gig in Denver Colorado when the call came to start forming the massive line to board the plane. As you can imagine, a crowd forms just to get on the aluminum tube (as Mr. Cooley refers to planes) and he noticies this guys who is all deshelved trying to get on the plane. This guys pulls out a massive pile of papers which are all crumpled up and such, and continues to write down what was going through his mind at the time.
Not sure if this person was sitting across from Mr. Cooley or what, but it seemed he was writing a letter to his girlfriend/wife/lover about breaking up the relationship.
So Mr. Cooley in his great observance of folks and amazing writing skills put the song together.

Couple of line's I'm unsure of, but think it's something like this:
Sure attention getter
memory in a letter?
ten pages maybe thicker
pen to paper showing where it soaked up tears
Unshaven and dishevelled
Glassy eyed and haggard
he unfolds the tattered pages
hoping maybe changes in her mind appear
All rolled up and folded
unrolled what they're exposing
the curse of a womans love in lines?
flight 218 to Denver
Strange how I remember
wondering who in Denver
Still breaks hearts on paper
still takes time to write
voices when you read them
breathe the way you need it
sound the way you'd like to sound
if you'd likcked the stamp to say good bye
Altitudes no matter
when the world unplugs it scatters
then its only paper and theres still 10000 feet to read it one more time
All rolled up and folded
unrolled what they're exposing
the curse of a womans love in lines?

Cooley played this one at the show in Birmingham, which I thought was one of the best solo shows of his I've seen. If you haven't seen him solo lately, go if you get the chance. He's developed a really nice fingerpicking style and the Dali Lama t-shirts are pretty cool.

Deb I didn't know what you were referencing so it put me in search mode. I have to agree. This just made my Christmas wish list.

I like that song a lot. The shirt too.
A thousand clusterfucks will not kill my tiny light
Re: New Cooley Song - 218 To Denver
Bought the shirt last night. Ansley said she took the picture of the Dalai Lama when he was in Birmingham and their son's choir got to perform for him. They photoshopped Cooley in. Love that he's holding the rekkid.

Wow. At risk of getting all kinds of shit for hyperbole, I have to say that this song recalls the simple eloquence of Kris Kristofferson's best work. Cooley, Hood and Isbell are three of the best songwriters of my generation -- well, technically Isbell is from the generation behind me but he did his apprenticeship with two of the best. I can't wait to hear DBT work this one up for their upcoming acoustic tours.
I have nowhere else to go. There is no demand in the priesthood for elderly drug addicts

That shirt? Terrible on like thousands of levels... though I do like the triangle that points at his crotch as if to say, "Here fans, is the source of the inspiration, where all the magic happens..."
That song? When I watch that video, I feel like a professional basketball player is ripping my heart out of my chest, dribbling it across the court, slam dunking it. catching it, dribbling it back across the court and placing it back in my chest as I sit there mesmerized by the beauty and brilliance of the song... all from a cell phone video... It's so lovely and perfect I don't even know...
Jesus...
The duality of the Cooley thing...
His facial expression is terrifying. He's basically the equine Chucky.

Fair enough... That was over the top and I deserve to be called on it.
Was SMASHED when I wrote it.
But on sober reflection, I'm still quite negative on the shirt and super impressed by the song. I honestly, for whatever reason, didn't think he had another one like that in him. I don't know why, maybe because typically he isn't super prolific and he made such a significant contribution to the last record... Also lately I'm surrounded by rabid Raptors fans.
Anyway... I don't take it back, but I could have used a subtler approach for sure.

Ummm... I was referring to the song, not your assessment; shit, I concur.
I don't mean this as derogatory although I'm sure some would not view it as complimentary, but it's very 70 's singer/songwriterish.
E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.

I was here for this, and thought it was a real treat. Hoping its get a proper release on a new album.
Re: New Cooley Song - 218 To Denver
Great tune, I dig it- It wasn't until we saw Cooley solo that I realized how many real tear jerkers Cooley has. My fiancée was literally in tears for a few songs. Space City? Jesus, that's a punch to the gut. What a sad and vivid story he tells.
And that Cooley shirt is awesome, I was lucky enough to get one after the fact. I love that the Dalai Lama is holding a copy of The Fool on Every Corner.. Classic!

For those of us with unbooked faces.
Don't hurt people, and don't take their stuff.

Some small changes based on the new video. Still a few things I can't figure out.

Took this a while back but forgot to post it. One off.
