Track # 153 - The Part of Him

Post by Clams »

Nothing's better than when a hypocritical asshole politician gets caught doing something that he preaches against. Yep, there's always someone all too eager to play the part of him (or her).

He was elected, wingnut raised and corn fed
Teabags dragging on the chamber floor
He did what he had to do to get southern boys to vote for you
To grease the wheels to get you in the door
But he must of said some things
that made them think that he was strange
and made them wonder if he was one of them
So they had to call him in but he wouldn’t make amends
so they had to reel the poor boy in

He was an absolute piece of shit to tell the truth
But he never told the truth to me
He never told the truth to you don’t think he ever set out to
He was indifferent to honesty
His positions were pre-ordained to help conceal his vast disdain
for anything that lessened his appeal
His integrity was phoning in, totally Nixonian
honing in the art of making deals

He was a piece of work, more or less a total jerk
His own mama called him an SOB
He never worked an honest day, just kissed up to a better way
to sell the cow you could get for free
When he got out of line, they snatched him up from behind
and put him in a box with fancy trim
Rolled him out for all to see his rendezvous with destiny
Now someone else will play the part of him
Everyone needs a friend, everyone needs a fuck

Woth saying again:

"He was indifferent to honesty" is a great line that still catches my ear every time.

If you said there were a couple of strained rhymes I couldn't really argue with you but I think that this a remarkably effective and precise description of a person/phenomenon for a pop song. High marks for this one.

Personally, I think this is the most underrated song on "English Oceans".

Yet another Patterson song that I'm kind of meh about on the record but like a lot live. Seeing this one live changes everything.

It's pretty close for me. The lyrics are spot on truth.

My favorite Patterson track on EO. It has lyrics that are brilliant, and the music is just so damn good, I could listen to this one song on repeat all day.

The burning question is will she castrate pigs in Washington and if so who's going to play the part of her and do that job after her term's up?

I doubt she'll be heard from at all. First termer, small state, majority party? She'd have been a lot better off in the minority (for her own purposes i mean). She'll get the typical coverage in the local Iowa media for ribbon cuttings etc but I don't see her as even a blip on the national radar. Oh, wait. No pork from her, so no ribbon cuttings. Yeah, right.

I don't believe it's ribbons she has in mind.

Anyone ever think of this song in the context of the current presidency? Obviously, he wasn't the kind of politician Patterson had in mind, but art enters the world and takes on new meanings, plus ... that last line above.

At the time, I thought "Made Up English Oceans" was a cut above this one, but yeah, it turns out Patterson was hooked into the future when he wrote it. Art is funny that way sometimes.
The sooner we put those assholes in the grave&piss on the dirt above it, the better off we'll be
