Awesome. When I picked up my vinyl at the local record store last Monday, it was the last one. The owner said he had been fielding calls on it all day, and that he already ordered more. "Good for them," I said.
To which he replied,"yeah, if anyone deserves to break thru..."

This is awesome news. WIth all the adversity these guys have gone through the past couple of years, to put out their highest charting album to date is a great accomplishment. Usually I write of Billboard rankings because they are full of bullshit (like the "Frozen" soundtrack being number 1 for example)...but when someone like DBT can break into the charts it proves there is some justice in the world :)

I have no idea how good No 16 in Billboard is? Not sure on US charts at all, what number would an act like The Black Keys, Midlake,John Grant, Steven Malkmus expect to go in at? Just picked these at random, as they are probably similar size acts to DBT in the UK.

If I remember correctly, Jason Isbell went it at #8 with Southeastern.

i don't think that was on Billboard's 200, although it might have been on the Rock Chart, or Indie Chart. Looking there for his history it says that Southeastern topped out at 23.

Then I don't remember correctly :) But I do remember the number 8 in relation to that album.

16 is really good. Doesn't reflect nearly as many album sales as in the old days, but hey, 16 is 16. Totally guessing, I'd say that the only albums on your list that might have debuted that high or higher would be the last couple of Black Keys releases (and most definitely not the earlier ones). A Pavement (as opposed to Malkmus) release would probaby be in the top 20, maybe even the top 10 because the band has assumed legendary proportions since its demise, but I doubt any Pavement albums charted that well upon their original release.

I was kind of shocked when I just looked up Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (Pavement's best seller) and found it peaked at 121. I had my stores then and it was top ten in sales at both for weeks.

Black Keys highest charter was El Camino at #2.

Of course, these numbers are all relative to all the other numbers (not unlike an Amazon ranking) and I have no idea what that translates to in the music world, but I am certain it's some nice numbers.

Would not be surprised if the real number was higher, given the fan base. The mom-and-pop record stroes usually don't report to Billboard/SoundScan - you pretty much need a fully computerized POS with barcode scanner to do that.

Also, don't discount what People Magazine can do for sales. I have seen it be very effective very recently - even with literary fiction.

English Oceans didn't make top 40 in the BBC chart, which back in the day was the only chart that mattered. However it made no 34 in the Official album chart, whatever the hell that is!! If this chart carries any credence at all I would say 34 isn't too bad for a relatively obscure band, at least for mainstream UK music buyers.
And when you look at this chart and see the crud that is above it, EO is like a rose floating on a sea of turds :D

Currently #18 on the Amazon music chart. Take out the 6 Led Zep re-releases that have stormed the upper reaches of the charts and it would be a very respectable #12 although the album does seem to be losing momentum. Hopefully the live rock show in some of the big east coast cities will reverse that trend in the next week or 2.

Interestingly, oddly or something... SRO is #11 on the alternative chart but E0 isn't on the chart at all, which makes no sense to me. OTOH, renewed interest in the older albums can't be anything but good and is more or less "found money." :)

Southeastern peaked at #23 on Billboard 200
At #126 this week
13 weeks on the chart (longevity is a key factor)

Wonder if Music Today is 2 weeks behind with providing sales data as well... :)

Seriously, you had to know the slide was coming, how many of us bought multiple copies at the outset??

It's crazy but not even the hugely popular "artists" stay on top but for a second now. The fact that Indie people chart so high now is friggin alarming.
Someone can sell 5000 albums it's opening week and chart in the top 10. If you would have told me that 20 years ago I wouldn't have believed you.

Thats the trajectory of all albums by established artists in the Soundscan era, a high debut followed by a precipitous drop. The difference is that since the internet apocalypse, artists with small, but very loyal followings can debut in the upper reaches of the charts as total sales figures are down.

When I worked for a label in 2000, we had an album debut at #200 with about 6000 units scanned, now that would be a top 100 album.
