I'm really surprised that the A.V. Club, which was the debut site for the "Part of Him" acoustic video a few weeks ago (as one of their news items), hasn't reviewed English Oceans. They've reviewed every other DBT album and the last two Patterson solo albums and generally don't give short shrift to roots/alt country music. Maybe there's a change in management or it slipped through the cracks, but normally these guys are on the ball. I do know that Steve Hyden left there for Grantland and their movie people all left to form The Dissolve, but still, skipping the review of an album like this is unprecedented for them.
shizzer wrote:Spin has a pretty scathing review. The part about wanting to be Eric Church's band? Gimme a break. That is just almost too stupid to even bother posting an intelligent response. Let me find the article....
A lot of that didn't even make sense. I honestly didn't know what specific ideas the reviewer was trying to express, other than not liking it.

Simon Sweetman (that reviewer) can be a total fucktard. but he says nice things here, which is nice.
It was also reviewed on our local equivalent of NPR yesterday. Generally favourable though the reviewer is a crusty old English ex-pat dude.
Make sure to click the link to the actual review (this link is to a blog post/feature). Reviewer practically swoons, perhaps the most positive review of the album yet w/ several great "back cover [or more specifically front cover sticker] quotes." But why do so many reviewers seem to mix up the "God must be a lonely man" line? Here, he gets both the writer and the song wrong. Strange.

I meant to link to the article. Not sure what happened there. I figured people would want to read both so didn't think I needed to separately link to the review.

Been reading Walter Tunis' reviews in the Lexington Herald-Leader since I was a kid, he does good work. Seems to be a good guy too, met him at a DBT show years ago at the now-defunct Dame in Lexington.
