For y'all attempting to travel on Wednesday, I would advise delaying your arrival into Athens until mid-Thursday morning at the earliest...new weather warning this morning:
... Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 7 PM this evening to 7 PM EST Tuesday... ... Winter Storm Watch now in effect from Tuesday evening through Thursday morning...
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for snow and sleet... which is in effect from 7 PM this evening to 7 PM EST Tuesday.
* Locations... portions of north Georgia... mainly along and north of a line from Carrollton to Atlanta to Washington.
* Hazard types... rain mixed with snow and sleet on Tuesday... with sleet and freezing rain on Wednesday.
* Accumulations... up to 1 inch of snow can be expected during the advisory period on Tuesday. During the watch period Tuesday night through Thursday morning... up to an additional 1 to 2 inches of snow with a tenth to a quarter inch of ice.
* Timing... rain Monday night will mix with and possibly change over to snow or a snow sleet mix by sunrise Tuesday morning. As temperatures warm through the day... precipitation will likely change back over to rain before transitioning again back to a mix of rain sleet and snow Tuesday evening. By Wednesday morning... expect a mix of sleet and freezing rain... finally transitioning back to snow by Thursday morning.
* Impacts... snow will accumulate on roads making for hazardous driving conditions early Tuesday. On Wednesday... ice will begin to accumulate on roads making for hazardous or impossible driving conditions. Ice that accumulates on trees and powerlines could bring down large tree limbs and cause power outages.
* Winds... northeast 5 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
* Temperatures... in the upper 30s Tuesday with lower to mid 30s on Wednesday.
* Uncertainty... there is still some uncertainty in the forecast for Wednesday but confidence is increasing in the potential for a significant winter storm. Folks across north Georgia should monitor this situation closely in the event that the advisory or watch are upgraded to a warning.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow or sleet will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while driving.
A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant snow... sleet... or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts. Now is the time to prepare for this winter storm. Be sure to buy non-perishable foods. Make contingency plans if you plan on traveling during this period. If you can change your travel plans... do so before the event starts. Now is the time to plan. Do not wait for the warning!
We're in a pickle. We were planning to leave Wednesday morning which would get us to Atlanta right about the time the storm ends but the roads could be awful. The other thing is that we could leave tomorrow if the ice misses us in Jackson and make it as far as we can, Birmingham looks clear. That would leave all day Wednesday to travel what woul normally take 3 hours. The whole thing sucks.
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved
We're watching this very closely. We were going to leave Wednesday afternoon and arrive Wednesday night. It looks like now we'll be cancelling our Wednesday hotel room and leaving sometime Thursday. At this point our goal is just to make it to Athens before the band hits the stage Thursday night.
Not happy at all about this damn weather
Turn you demons into walls of goddamned noise and sound.
I'm arriving Wednesday afternoon. Looks like it's going to be fun. Hopefully the weather forecasters in the US are as rubbish as the ones over here, I'm hoping they're erring on the cautious side.

After the debacle they had on Atlanta roads two weeks ago I expect the roads will be better prepared. Looks like my route coming in from the East on I 20 will be dicey. I 85 and I 77 will be rough as well. Everyone drive safely.
That's me there in the middle of the proverbial rock and hard place:
Thursday (current flight): Major snow in Boston. Wed (possible change): Major ice in Atlanta
I have no idea what to do. The potential for delays at either end is obvious but I don't know how to weigh them. Fuck. When did the south stop being in the south?
Any other northerners facing the same decision? What's your thinking?
What used to be is gone and what ought to be ought not to be so hard
Hey BTB - I'm flying out as well Thursday on the earliest flight out of the third world airport they call LaGuardia. LGA. Judgiing by what is going on now - I'm sure I will get out and on my way to ATL as the snow line is not supposed to hit us until 8am or so. I'm going to be heading to Macon, then stick handle my way to Athens on the 129/441 feed.
My advice to ya brother is to get out on this first fucking plane out of Logan. Do your change now beofre it is too late. You'll be fine and we'll all be rocking at the WATT in a few days. Travel safe. ~HW~
I can't help much on the Northern end of things but if anyone wants to talk to someone on the ground here in Georgia for weather updates, feel free to PM me or ask for my cell number. Just hope to help get all the brother and sister Heathens to Athens
Is it a big deal to change your flight? I'm leaving (hopefully) Newark at 9:30 am on Thursday.I may want to change to an earlier flight if possible. I assume that some sort of fee is involved? Flying Delta if that matters

Depends on your priority status. With no status, same day is $150, and other day is difference in price of ticket plus 150. Or that how it was a few years ago (Fly Delta all the time, but have status now so not sure latest). It sucks, royally.

I think jonicont said the change fees were waived because of the winter advisory.

Yes, I just got an advisory from my airline (US Airways, who are awful), and fees are waived for however I want to re-jigger my flight (as long as it meets a ton of annoying conditions).
We could theoretically switch to an early flight tomorrow morning, but I'm not sure of the likelihood that'll get through to ATL, and I'm sure it'll be worse the longer we wait. What do folks think?

That's right TC. I'm on Delta. However, the advisory is for Wednesday. Doesn't hurt to ask. That's what I did

Good advice, HW. But HW you didn't tell me that when I log on to the Southwest site it would send me to the AirTran site which would not accept my info which required me to call airtran and wait on hold for the usual forever only to be told that I needed Southwest not Airtran, getting re-transferred and then being told that it would cost me $190 to switch from the noon flight to the 7 am flight. This is not a change fee you understand, 'cause SW doesn't charge those, this is the difference in fare (to take the exact same trip). And according to them, there's no weather advisory in either atlanta or boston for thursday so no luck there, unlike the retired swami. So it will cost me an extra $190 to make the trip and i'm debating what to do when i suddenly remember my own advice and even tho 190 is a pretty big tail, the dog is still bigger so i take the plunge. Adding insult to injury, i now have to wake up at about 4:45 am which is a great way to start a day that will end at about 2 am.
But it's worth it.
Right? It's worth it. Tell me it's worth it.
