Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread
I learned a long time ago not to go by my initial excitement at having a new album from my favorite band spinning. I usually will listen to it several times a day for the first couple weeks, put it down for a week, then come back to it. That will be my initial assessment. The real test, however, is six months later when it is no longer new, when I've already caught several shows from the tour and have gotten excited over other records. Six months later is it still at the front of the pile or has it been languishing near the bottom for a while?
That being said, to my ears the new record is more like ABAAC and TBTD than BTCD or GGB. The songs, however, seem much stronger than ABAAC and TBTD. This is their big, hard rock album. Maybe their third attempt at the big rock record is the charm? Time will tell.

I really think the stripped down line up has been huge. Patton brings an edge that Shonna didn't, we have less mediocre songs fighting for space, and Jay Gonzalez has never been more effectively utilized.
how many stars do you give it?
5 cans out of a 6er.

Ditto man, this has the potential to be a long two months (twitches)

We really aren't going to argue ABAAC again are we?
Iowan fucking loves his ABAAC. Whereas that album has grown on me significantly over the years, EVERY time I listen to that album at some point I think about how highly Iowan ranks that one in the DBT discography. I respect him for that.

Grand Canyon is a great, great album closer.

Agreed. It's got an almost "Angels & Fuselage" feel to it.
Shit Shots is a great, great opener. Well bookended album.

Yes, it does.

I feel like I am the only here who hasn't heard anything from the album but Primer Coat..
Is DBT posting messages somewhere saying "Hey a new track will be featured on ____ radio station at Noon" or do you guys already have copies?

Lol. Naw man. I haven't heard anything either. Just Primer Coat and Hearing Jimmy Loud. The excitement from those who have listened to the whole thing is really good to see.

Put it this way: Primer Coat is the "worst" Cooley song on the record
Patterson's stuff seems heavily influenced by the Heat Lightning sessions
/two cents

It does feel similar. I prefer Grand Canyon more as a song on its own merit. That being said, SRO couldn't have ended any other way.

I just so happen to be a regular listener to KEXP, that's how I heard about "Primer Coat" and "Hearing Jimmy Loud" being played on their Swingin' Doors program. The reason others are commenting on the entire record is because the album has leaked. So far, those are the only tunes from the record that I've heard aside from versions of the other songs I've heard in concert, on archive.org or on YouTube.

Thank you! It seems so clear to me that it was driving me crazy that nobody seemed to agree. Phew! Dodging the home for another day.

I'm gonna guess that's going to turn out to be a minority opinion, but then again, all is right w the world. We couldn't have you in the majority for more than a few minutes. The stars were beginning to go out of alignment

Yep. Had the same reaction. Either Patterson or Barbe (and I'll go w/ Patterson unless advised otherwise) surely knows how to put an album together. Nothing new there but still worth noting.
Does anyone know if the Craig-like coda is actually Craig or DBT channeling? In either case, a perfect touch and ending.

It's all just true opinions
I find I like Cooley best either quiet and sad, or loud and full of swagger. I put Primer Coat in with Gravity's Gone and SDZ: mid- tempo rockers with good lyrics, but lacking the grit I require

Exactly. I really want to talk about this album. But the reason is that I'm so totally excited about it and I know better than to go w/ that initial reaction. So I'm trying to cool off a little and gain a little distance, but the boys are making it very hard to do that For now I'm gonna go with "their best in a long while" as an easy and relatively safe judgment. And by board standards I think i'm a pretty big fan of GGB.

I have searched the internet far and wide and have no idea how so many of you have come across copies.
