great job lurleen. outstanding.

congratulations on a great interview. patterson is typically is a great read, but he seemed especially at ease with you and your style. well done.

my mother is an old kooky southern lady. she wears floppy straw hats, overalls, works in her tomato garden, votes democrat to the core, takes in stray animals, cusses the heat and reads the classics. comes from a long, undistinguished line of southern crazies.

as far as ur hidden novel......in my mother's words......pop yo whoop!.

Lurleen, that is fantastic! You should write more!

My favorite part:

BD: There are certain songs of yours that change my life. The first nine notes of Sinkhole literally seem to alter my biochemistry – regardless of how many times I’ve heard it. I can be in the depths of depression and put on some DBT, and my whole mood, psyche, and general disposition are instantly improved. Do any of your own songs move you in that way? What other artists’ songs have that affect on you?

PH: Big Star had that affect on me. Curtis Mayfield. Something/Anything? by Todd Rundgren and the second album by The Glands. Springsteen’s 1978-1982 output and The Clash. Eddie Hinton. Neil Young’s four mid-70’s gloom and doom albums (Time Fades Away, On The Beach, Tonight’s The Night and Zuma) all have that affect.

If I’m sick or burned out, I might play “The Living Bubba” to remind me of what’s important, etc. That’s still the best song I ever wrote.
In my blood, there's gasoline..

Aww. Y'all make me blush. Thank you for the kind words. I got wonderful suggestions for questions from JimmyC, Lara, Maluca, Dave, and Little Mamma, too. I can't take credit for all of the ideas for questions. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to JPW at Alabama Ass Whuppin' for being willing to publish such a lengthy interview (my local paper wouldn't give us but 600 or so words). My biggest gratitude, of course, is reserved for Mr. Patterson Hood. He was so very generous and kind to take the time to answer all those questions and I can tell he really put a lot of thought into his responses. There are many 3DD writers who are much more talented than me, I just was in the right place at the right time.

Thanks y'all

GootaLawd, that was as good as it gets. I've been reading DBT interviews for many years, and that was as pure (from both interviewer and interviewed) as any I've read. Thank You!!

I'm a relatively new fan and that is the first interview I've read that really gave me real insight into what the band is all about....excellent. Thanks.

Seriously, this is the conversation I would have with Patterson if I could sit down with him over beers and get my star-struck head out of my ass long enough to think of such insightful questions. What really comes through for me is how engaged he seemed to be with your questions to him. Definitely the best interview with Patterson I have ever read. Kudos to you, Lurleen. Great prep for tonight's viewing of "The Secret to a Happy Ending" for me.

Everyone in this band has their thing and they are all very important. Neff is just phenomenal, not only as a player but his sense of melody in the parts he plays and his sense of composition in the studio. Jay is totally incredible as a player, singer, writer and performer plus he’s a supercool fucker to hang out with. Shonna just keeps getting better and better at what all she does. “You Got Another” is one of the coolest songs ever and “I Told You So” sounds like it could be a missing Buddy Holly song or something.

so many things to like about this passage, but the part about shonna is particularly cool.

Great stuff, but I have to disagree with Patterson. I dont think Heaven is Whenever is the best THS album since Separation Sunday. IMO Stay Positive is better than Heaven is Whenever.

He reads this board quite often huh.

Also, I guess he doesnt agree with our thread about covers they should do.
We’re not a jam band

He doesnt really want any of us on the bus, as if that wasnt obvious.

I like the Avon Lady off AAW.

He hates the term Southern Rock.
We do a lot of songs about killing too but we ain’t murderers.

They dont have much say about where they play. So dont get pissed at them because they arent in Ohio 10 times a year, Zip.

I’m generally a fairly nice guy
but if you piss him off... Have seen him get pissed a few times, mostly during shows.

They do give fans plenty of opportunities to meet them and get autographs, so it sounds like he doesnt want people stalking the bus or him after the show, which is understandable.

Great interview Lurleen!
