In his essay in The Bitter Southerner (http://bittersoutherner.com/patterson-h ... htCdz8bgsI), Patterson writes, "my partner Mike Cooley wrote a fair share, including the two best songs" (referring to SRO).
So, which two are the best in Patterson's opinion?

From the BBC, Southern Rock Opera is included. Unfortunately, the audio for the interview with Patterson didn't work for me.

Makes sense, and I'd concur, but you'd think WOW would have been on the greatest hits album if so. Maybe just not enough room....Smitty wrote:I know Zip City is one, guessing WOW is the other.litdimly wrote:In his essay in The Bitter Southerner (http://bittersoutherner.com/patterson-h ... htCdz8bgsI), Patterson writes, "my partner Mike Cooley wrote a fair share, including the two best songs" (referring to SRO).

This is Patterson's tribute to Jimmy Johnson who passed away last week. It's called "Ronnie and Neil (and Jimmy Johnson)" and it's a must-read for anyone who loves SRO and/or the Muscle Shoals scene

My favorite moment, on the last Skynyrd cruise we went on, was standing in the chow line with Jimmy Johnson.Clams wrote:This is Patterson's tribute to Jimmy Johnson who passed away last week. He told us the same story word for word, about Duane and Wilson Picket, that he told on that CMT special on Southern Rock.

Bryan (beaverdamsfinlaw) sent this to me. By the way, his bday was yesterday. Graham called us to wish him a happy bday while we were eating Chinese takeout in his backyard. Most folks won’t ever know a father in law like this!!!
I knew that Sro was released right around the time of 9/11 but had forgotten. My kids watched a program on 9/11 this am…everything seems so surreal. I was a graduate student on 9/11/01 and had yet to hear of DBT.
Twenty years can cause one to wax philosophical….

That Stereogum bit is a really nice summary.
I only heard SRO about six years ago so in my head I always think of it as a fairly recent record!
The first DBT album I heard was A Blessing and a Curse. So despite liking a couple of tracks I didn't really get into the band and didn't pick up any of the releases after that. Then I heard English Oceans which I liked enough to go back to Southern Rock Opera and.... then I got it.
What I think the article misses is that, even though it's obviously rooted in and about the south, the themes on that record are more universal. Plenty of people come from areas that outsiders don't understand. Plenty of people have teenage flings with girls whose parents don't like the look of them. Plenty of people went to see every band they possibly could as kids.
It's incredibly ambitious but it's the honesty that makes it work. And of course it rocks like a bastard.

Not sure if this is the right place to put it but love this short twitter thread on the loudest band in the world from PH.

I stumbled across this article, and I kept thinking, “I wonder if SRO will be listed?”
