DBT tracks #131 - Moved/Cassie's Brother

Post by Clams »

Couple of Rob Malone songs to close out SRO for song of the week. Much maligned, but they're essential parts of the story.

Moved
I live down in Alabama where the river so muddy got to watch where you step.
Figurin' out things by the Railroad Bridge and a cousin or two want to give me just a little help.

Damn sure not much to do down here 'cept to cook it down and run it in your veins.
That's where the trouble started.
I fucked a lot of friends.
I fucked a lot of friends got a black line drawn right across my name.

Before the soul dies.
Before the sun burns out.
I want to walk through heaven's gate.
I want to walk through heaven's gate.

Moved on over to Georgia
Where the people's so nice you got to watch where you step.
Lookin' for toes and feelings.
Kicking and screaming sheets stay soaking wet.

The sun looks like the sun again
I got me a woman who does just a little wrong - just enough.
I'm through with addiction and heartache - now I say so long.

I made a valid attempt.
But I can't change my spots.
Lost everything again.
Everything I got.

And now my body dies
And the sun burns out
I walk through heaven's gate.
(or so my mama's told.)
I walk through heaven's gate.

Cassie's Brother
Well there's a hole in the band and
as a favor to Cassie
we'll let her brother come and jam.
If he ain't no good,
we'll just leave him right out of the mix.
But he proceeded to give some tired mules a coupla kicks

Two weeks later,
and brothers in the band.
Two more weeks a live album in the can.
Expect we'll all be in his shadow one day.
That boys a writin' and playin' fool.
We're the guitar army again.
There ain't nothin that we can't do

(chorus)
Cassie's brother was an okie boy.
Played guitar just like a god
Write you a song and sing it too.
Music so fine it makes you feel brand new.

Two years later,
Street Survivors hit the shelves.
Beyond expectation, sounding better than ourselves.
Just wanna keep playing
As long as we possibly can

(repeat chorus)
Everyone needs a friend, everyone needs a fuck

I have certain moods where I enjoy Moved sometimes....I have yet to find that for Cassie's Brother.
Never going back to Buttholeville. (Good luck with that!)

I simply cannot stand Malone's vocal style. Might be good songs if covered by someone else

I like "Moved" but don't think it quite fits on SRO. The song is more about somebody attempting to solve their problems through a geographical move but wind up in the same rut in a different town. It references drug addiction. I've always considered Zip City to be the end of Act I. It sums everything up nicely, the narrator having to leave his hometown in order to find his identity and destiny. Thematically, "Moved" might fit in better with "Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance."
I have nowhere else to go. There is no demand in the priesthood for elderly drug addicts

I enjoy Kelly Hogan's singing on Cassie. Pretty good songs, not great.

I thought that was Brad's wife?

Brad's wife has sung it live a couple of times, but it's Kelly on the record.

On another note - I wonder if Moved is about Patterson at all - a lot of the details actually dovetail with his story - the move to Athens right after a divorce, other dark things, etc

I'm a big fan of Cassie's Brother. As I've said previously, I love Rob Malone's voice. But, I love the heavy guitar licks and I loved the girls voice, which I'm happy to hear its Kelly Hogan. And, I like the story. I just assumed this song was done already, I would have done it. I like Moved as well.

Moved is a good song but I agree that it doesn't fit on SRO at all. I think they could have left White Knuckle West VA on and it would have been better.

Rob Malone's songs aren't bad. They just don't fit.

I didn't realize that "White Knuckle, WVA" was ever part of Southern Rock Opera.

They stick out like sore thumbs next to all the classics. Can't stand them and wish they were never included.

It's great. But not certain what that has to do with the original topic.

It doesn't, really. It has to do with you taking offense at others (myself included) being critical of the artwork for Cooley's new solo record. In other words, there's no aspect of the Truckers' work that is ever going to be free of criticism. I see no harm in it as long as it's constructive.

I really didn't take offense. Just find it silly to complain about art work on what looks to be a fantastic release. Agree to disagree. The content of the new Cooley release means way more to me than the art work is all.

Some people also seem offended by the content as well as it being referred to as his "solo debut" because it's comprised mainly of Truckers songs. Personally, I feel the album cover shows a lack of imagination and I'm not offended at all by the content.

Back to the topic at hand, I love both "Moved" and "Cassie's Brother".

Someone is saying something around the 3:28 mark in Cassie. Never noticed this before. Excuse if allready discussed back in the days. Anyone able to make out the words?

I have no clue. "This part I play nice?"

I like Cassie's Brother. IMHO Moved doesn't fit on the record...at all.

I have no evidence that this isn't perfectly correct.
