18 Wheels Of Love - Chester Adams RIP (April 26, 1945 - May 27, 2010)
Y'ALL:

I'm sad today to report that my Stepfather, Chester Adams passed away this morning in Florence AL.

He's been really sick for several years and had twice made amazing recoveries from deathbed conditions.

He's been suffering from a host of problems, especially congestive heart failure for about three years and was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.
He's been having a really tough time with the treatment for that and took a major turn for the worse this past weekend.

My mom is doing alright considering but it's gonna be a long sad road for her for a while.

Their courtship was the subject of our song and monologue "18 Wheels of Love" and his near death experience a few years ago was detailed in the Austin City Limits version last year.

I don't know yet what kind of arrangements will be made but will post something at a later time when we know more.

Please keep Mom in your thoughts today.

Chester was a cool guy and truly a force of nature that will be forever missed in our family.

Thanks,
Patterson

It is a testament to their talent and storytelling abilities that Chester feels a lot closer to us than he really was. Patterson paints such a compelling image of the man that you really feel like you know his character.

Surely a horrible loss - condolences to Patterson and the whole DBT family...

True. Through only one song, I've learend that Chester lived life on his own terms, looked death square in the eye and said, "NOT NOW!" R.I.P. Big Man.

Music, film and fiction fans often forget that behind the stories are real people. Most of us never met Chester. But the story Patterson tells of his mother's courtship and marriage helped all of us to believe in the strength and perserverence of the human heart. Sometimes we can endure on our own. But other times it takes two people to bring healing to each other. I often play 18 Wheels of Love and U2's "One" back to back. The songs are closer in theme than most of us realize.

Patterson, take all the time you need to be with your family. The concerts can always be rescheduled. I say this as a ticket holder.

This story/song brought tears to my eyes even before the emotional "Part II" on ACL. It's true that we all felt that we personally knew Chester and Jan from the vivid pictures Patterson paints with his storytelling. I was so very saddened to read this news. Sad for Chester, and sad for the family, but especially sad for Patterson's Momma. I can't even begin to imagine how much she must be hurting.

Theirs is one of my favorite love stories of all time.

Rest in Peace big man.

Amen to that. This news hits me way harder than it should. Hearing that tune live, especially with the extended beginning never ever failed to get me choked and teared up.

RIP Chester. And my heart's out to his family and friends

The soonerette still plays this song first when we travel together. And she still cheers when Chester beats death in the ACL version of the story. Sometimes we have to listen to it back to back. She loves it.
And I have a feeling she always will. I just told her about this. She said she felt like we'd lost a friend.
Condolences to PH & family.

Patterson, I am really Sorry for you loss I know how you feel, I just lost 2 good Friends this month, 2 gone in 2 weeks, They as well as Chester Are in a Greater place right now, than what they were going thru recently & the tough part is for those of us still here, I will pray for your Mom so as to help comfort her loss as well as yours, I hope you were able to tell Chester how you felt about him & let him know how GOOD he was for your Mom,
I was fortunate enough to be able to tell my friends, what they meant to me & How lucky I was to have had them in my life, Before they passed, That does seem to lighten the loss a bit for me but it is still a heavy hit to take.
Life is short, The World is Small, Hug the special people in your life & let them know what they mean to you while they are still here. May Chester Rest in Peace untill ya'all meet again
With you in Spirit & Prayer
