I've had pretty good luck in the past using Priceline to get the Sheraton for $50-$55 before tax. Just bid on 4 star downtown. There is a trolly that will drop you off about 2 blocks away. Cab ride back is $5.
There are other hotels closer but you will end up paying much more.

You need to do a "Name your own price" for a 4 star in downtown Birmingham. My last win was the Sheraton for $55. Do not stay at the knights inn.

Looking at Better Bidding they say to bid on a 3.5 * in Central Birmingham so maybe my memory of 4* was incorrect.
