Songs you miss in the set....

Post by TDB »

Ok, even though my days of seeing 30 shows a year have waned, there are songs I miss hearing. How about you?
I'm just curious what you would y'all would like to see get thrown back into the mix.

Not so rare: Living Bubba, 18 Wheels of Love, Tails Facing Up, Love Like This, Tornado's, Checkout Time in Vegas

Kinda rare: Steve McQueen, Zoloft, Panties in Your Purse, Goode's Field Road, 72 (This Highway's Mean)

Pretty Rare: Aftermath USA, Bob, Eyes Like Glue, Cottonseed, George Jones CPTB

Super Duper Rare: A Blessing and a Curse, Little Bonnie, Great Big Horse and Little Pony,

Jesus is coming back: Demonic Possession, Three on the Tree, GREENVILLE TO BATON ROUGE!!!

One of these days has become a rareity. Didn't get in once in 11 shows last year.

Me, either.

By getting to shows late (or by going late to shows I couldn't've otherwise attended), I've missed that fucker three times now. On the other hand, my first show started with Zip City and ended with Angels and Fuselage. I suppose that evens things out at least a little.

The updated version of Sounds Better in the Song is stunning. I was fortunate to catch it this past summer (at the Wellmont - immediately following that killer version of World of Hurt, I believe). It needs to see the light of day more often.

I guess I've been lucky. I've caught One Of These Days twice fairly recently.

I feel very lucky to have caught Wednesday in Athens this year.

I would love to catch Greenville To Baton Rouge, Aftermath U.S.A., Daddy's Cup, Panties In Your Purse.

Hopefully they'll start pulling out some of the stuff that they don't play much. It seems like there is a lot off of Southern Rock Opera that rarely sees the light of day. Hard to understand. I was really surprised to hear Dead Drunk And Naked in Athens.

I also wish Cooley would pull out some of his that he rarely plays. I love Carl Perkins' Cadilac and Gravity's Gone. But I think I've seen them both the last three shows. I would gladly swap them next time for Daddy's Cup or Panties In Your Purse or one of the other lesser palyed songs.

I don't know anything about a new version of Sounds Better In A Song. What's that all about?

^^This is from the Bloomington, IN show that was on the same tour leg as the Lexington run. I saw them play this version of the song in Lexington, Night 2 and my jaw literally dropped to the floor. It was a showstopping moment and it sounded incredible!! Sadly, the only other time I've heard it since then was at the Cooley solos in Birmingham. This song really needs to work its way back into the regular rotation, because this version is amazing!!

Thanks for posting Smarty. This simply kicks ass. When it first started and the drunks were yowling I thought I was going to lose my mind but when they settled down the music starts to sink into your soul. And that’s a good thing. 

I am positive Shut Up and Get on the Plane followed World of Hurt at the Wellmont. I'll never forget that performance.

I'll take Don't Be in Love Around Me for Patterson and Three on the Tree for Cooley.

Goodbye is a tune that has really grown on me. I didn't appreciate seeing it much during the ABAAC days, but when I've gone back to listen to the shows I miss seeing that one.

I also think its a crime that Careless has been away for so long.

Yes. I stand corrected. It came earlier in the set, maybe after Buttholeville?

Excellent work posting that vid, Smarty.

I really wanna see some stuff from the first two albums, mainly Demonic Possesion, Nine Bullets, The Company I Keep, etc., But I've rarely seen anything from ABAAC, except for "World Of Hurt," which is a shame. That was the first Truckers album I ever bought, mainly on the strength of "Aftermath USA." Then "Gravity's Gone" came on and I was sold. I so desperately wanna hear those two live.

Cottonseed. I haven't seen it in a while.

Wife Beater and Demonic Possession. I caught a Patterson stink eye when I murmured them a bit too loud at a solo show a couple years ago. I promptly retreated for a smoke like I was scolded by my mother...and drank water the rest of the night.

I was there.

Apparently I missed LTBR at the Friday Homecoming show

I'd love to see a few more of the songs off SRO. I thought they were going to do Roadcases at Homecoming as I'm pretty sure Patterson was playing the guitar part (or something pretty close to it) when he was talking about the Walmart store on the Saturday night. Would also like to see Birmingham.

Other than that I have a strange desire to see 'Daddy learned to Fly'

90 shows and there are still songs we are chasing. That's one of the many reasons why I love this band, you never know what they are going to play!
Still hoping for Greenville, like everyone else, and Three on a Tree, no surprise there.
Would also love Mama Bake a Pie, Daddy Kill a Chicken, still haven't seen that one. I don't think this will happen, but would also love Daddy's Little Pumpkin. There are more but those are what jump out right now.

One of the best shows I've ever seen was Waterloo, ON in June of 2011. We got 3 songs we had never seen before in 1 night! It was nuts! Plus the venue was tiny, the stage was about a foot off the floor, we were jammed in like sardines, it was hot, and everybody was in a good mood, and it was April Twister and Gretsch's hometown. It was a perfect storm for a great night. The set list was unreal that night, check it out:

1. Carl Perkins' Cadillac

2. Feb. 14

3. Women Without Whiskey

4. Wife Beater

5. Birthday Boy

6. Go-Go Boots

7. Where The Devil Don't Stay

8. Used To Be A Cop

9. Gravity's Gone

10. Life In The Factory

11. Get Downtown

12. Dancing Ricky

13. Everybody Needs Love

14. Perfect Timing

15. Too Much Sex (Too Little Jesus)

16. The Weakest Man

17. Panties In Your Purse

18. Margo and Harold

19. 3 Dimes Down

20. Hell No, I Ain't Happy

21. Marry Me

22. Mercy Buckets

23. Zip City

24. Let There Be Rock

25. Shut Up and Get On The Plane

26. Buttholeville
Jay Gonzalez - the Swiss Army Knife of Musicians - Patterson Hood

For anyone who loves Don't Be in Love Around Me, I randomly stumbled on to what could be my favorite version. Ridiculous supporting licks and an extended outro. Into a ridiculous Marry Me. Fantastic.

Plastic Flowers, could really do with hearing that live, and what about 'Wig' last time I heard them play it was Manchester Nov 2010,
The three guitars soloing at the the end was hypnotic, SUBLIME.
