So on my morning run yesterday "Where the Devil Don't Stay" came on and the lines "
"Son come running
You better come quick
This rotgut moonshine is making me sick"
Reminded me of Bob Dylan singing Cocaine Blues on his Bootleg album Tell Tale Signs
"Yonder comes by baby, all dressed in white
Hey baby, won't you stay all night
Cocaine all around my brain
Hey mamma, won't you come here quick
This old cocaine is making me sick
Cocaine all around my brain"
Now Bob Dylan didn't write that song I believe it was a old western song by TJ Arnell covered by Johnny Cash, and Leadbelly and probably a billion other people
I guess my question to you is when Cooley wrote this piece, was there any correlation to that old song?
Are there any other DBT songs that play homage to past songs... Besides pretty much all over Southern Rock Opera?

Just off the top of my head, I believe "Why Henry Drinks" is supposed to be the answer song to Hank Williams, Jr.'s "Family Tradition", specifically the line, "Hank, why do you drink?"

James McMurtry's Soda & Salt:
Mamma come runnin'
Daddy come quick
I think I swallowed something
It's making me sick
I don't know what it is
But it isn't sitting well with me
Don't you either one
Try to tell me it's supposed to be
Mamma come runnin'
Daddy come quick
I think I swallowed something
It's making me sick
I don't know what it is
But it isn't sitting well with me
Don't you either one
Try to tell me it's supposed to be
E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.

3 Dimes Down itself has the Bob Seger nod.
Re: Cooley and the Cocaine Blues
I believe Cooley adapted this piece from a poem written by a cousin or uncle. We don't know if Cooley or the collaborator came up with the chorus.
I have nowhere else to go. There is no demand in the priesthood for elderly drug addicts

Check out Keith Richards' cover of Cocaine Blues on Youtube. Fantastic stuff, and if anyone would know, it would be Keef.
