I love both Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I'm sorry, didn't mean to depress people. I'm just being honest. I do not like the holiday season. I stopped liking Christmas in high school. My favorite holidays are Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. I also like Easter. I'm not really a Scrooge. I am no grumpier at Christmas than I am the rest of the year. Never had anything depressing happen at Christmas like losing a family member. It is just that Christmas always seemed like something I had to "get through".

One of the things I enjoyed about being a pastor was that focusing on the religious aspect of the holidays made me enjoy them more.

I don't think it's a depressing post, actually I think it's a good story....... dealing with life's ups and downs. Like the 'Filter'

Good call. I love playing this one on guitar too so I'll have to work it up this weekend.

Since I'm away from both of my families today, I'm feeling this song pretty strongly in their absence. The duality of the Johnnie thing.

But I just realized something while singing the most topical lines to myself today:
My Aunt's praising Palin and my niece loves Obama
My uncle came to dinner wearing his pajamas
(I know just how the man feels. I haven't had long pants on since I got home from work Thursday night.)

But what I realized is that couplet's not quite consistent. It's meant, I think, to convey that's a couple and their daughter, but my aunt's daughter would be my cousin, not my niece. (If that's not how it works in your family, we have another song for you Northerners.) Now, you could recast that first line and still make it--what's the equivalent musical term for "scan"? Damned if I know--fit the rhythm of the song, like this:
My Aunt's praising Palin and my cousin Obama
or this:
My Aunt's praising Palin, my cuz loves Obama
or even this:
My Aunt's praising Palin, my cousin loves Obama
But neither of the first two sounds as natural as Patterson's line, and in even the third one, which isn't too bad, the tension between mother and child is less poignant than between mother and daughter. Here's a case where a slightly inexact meaning is worth the loss.

Thanks for bumping this.

Inevitably at some point on Thursday I think.....I'm thankful for a big tall stiff drink-full.

We're hosting my mother. At some point I'll sure wish I had smoked me a joint.

I hear ya TC. The key to happiness at the holidays....is in a direct inverse relationship with the amount of time spent with family.

(I did not read this in a greeting card.)

My family has been in mid to late November form since the middle of October. So I'm ready for Thanksgiving and the filter.

It's this time of year that I love my job just a bit more than I usually do. Since nobody stops using the sink/shower/toilet my place runs 24/7 which means unless the holiday falls on your days off you're working. I haven't had to go to any family holiday meals for the past 15 years. Xmas is especially convenient because I'm home long enough to be with my boys to open presents and then it's usually time to go to work. Missing dry turkey and the uninformed opinions vs the persecution Olympics battle Royale is just fine with me. Plus double time and a half doesn't hurt either. Hope you all have a great holiday and burn a joint for me

This is one one of my favorites to cover at home on the acoustic, particularly this time of year.

In their infinite wisdom, the Baby Beebses yelled at me for the insensitive lyrics because "it might be rude to the church people if you say the J word"

So it's been modified

"It's Thanksgiving and Cheese Sticks, I'm thankful"

I love playing it too but it's been a couple of years. Time to relearn.

Patterson's not the only one with a Thanksgiving song:

We've skillfully avoided the scenarios in this song by simply going out to eat on Thanksgiving the last several years.

Back in the days when I pretended to like my family I could totally relate to this song.

I might listen to it at some point this week, then again, maybe not.
