Never going back to Buttholeville. (Good luck with that!)

We (g/f and I) are in for the Wed night show. Our plan is to get some mountain biking in at Oak Mountain earlier that day before headed downtown to scope out the scene and grab a pre-show drink & dinner. Can anyone recommend a good hotel to stay at? One that is w/in walking distance of the venue would be a bonus.

Re: Cooley Solo in Birmingham 12/20
i'm in for wednesday!
super psyched. i moved away from the south about 8 years ago, just as i was discovering dbt. i've seen the band 5 times, patterson twice, jason three times, but i've never seen cooley, and i've never seen them on their home turf, so to speak. the very day i heard about this show i mentioned how nice that would be. it was about a day after i got tix for home too. it was almost like someone was listening to me.
it's a 150 mile drive to birmingham, but it might as well be 26.
can't wait.

Personal challenge: Mike Cooley of the Drive-By Truckers readies for solo shows at Birmingham's WorkPlay (video)

Mary Colurso -- The Birmingham News By Mary Colurso -- The Birmingham News
Mike Cooley's last solo show in Birmingham was in February 2005 at the Zydeco nightclub. "It's been about five years since I did one anywhere," Cooley said.
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The first thing you notice about Mike Cooley is his voice: big, warm, booming over the phone line.
His accent? Very Southern. His attitude? Humorous and self-deprecating.
Fans might think that Cooley — a guitarist, singer and songwriter for the Drive-By Truckers — would be entirely comfortable on any stage. And they’d be right, as long as the crowd on hand is huge.
"Thirty thousand people at Bonnaroo? No problem," he says. "A room full of first-graders? I’m sweating."
Cooley, who lives with his family in Hoover, is talking about the visits he’s made to his son’s school, and presentations he’s given to the boy’s classmates.
"Playing alone is terrifying," he says. "But it’s good to do something that scares the crap out of you once in a while."

I did not know Cooley lived in Hoover (kind of an upper middle class suburb of B'ham).

Re: Cooley Solo in Birmingham 12/20
gonna be cuttin it close on time with travel. Anyone have the 411 on opener? Seems like venues don't want to give out the info anymore in hopes of support for the acts or customers staying longer. Love having openers but info would definately take the stress out of driving 90 mph down I-20.

Re: Cooley Solo in Birmingham 12/20
So both these shows have sold out and I didn't order tickets and now I'm getting the urge to drive out there anyway and see what happens since I'm off work and all that and have nothing better to do. Am I wise, foolish, or running late?
The sooner we put those assholes in the grave&piss on the dirt above it, the better off we'll be

Here!! Made excellent time driving - would've been nice to know that Birmingham's on central time, though. We could've slept in another hour. Oh well.
I'm five miles away from the venue - kicking back in the hotel after a 9-hr drive right now. Can't wait for tonight!!

I was hoping to get some first hand reports but, sadly, Lurleen has been under the weather and didn't make it to Birmingham.

Trying to recall details...so hard because my mind is BLOWN. Wow. I got there early, so I got a seat in the front row and I should have some great pictures for y'all. The venue was really nice. Met Late4Church, and he is one cool guy (can't wait to see you tomorrow!). Cooley was wearing a light green shirt and was drinking Maker's Mark whiskey. He had both his regular acoustic and Cooley bird acoustic guitars (and yes, the bird did light up once during the show - hence the pause in the middle of Panties), his BANJO and a really cool-looking woodgrain electric guitar. The highlights of the night for me were the stripped-down version of Ghost, Cottonseed on BANJO and FINALLY getting to hear Pin Hits the Shell. Cooley's banter had me laughing so hard I was in tears. My face still hurts from the shit-eating grin I've been wearing for the past 3 1/2 hours. Crowd was well-behaved, and he got a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of the night.
That's about all I can get straight in my head right now. Goddamn was this night worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to do it again tomorrow!

Re: Cooley Solo in Birmingham 12/20
ZZ Top cover was "Rough Boy"
Great show. Got back to Atlanta around 2:30am and it's worth the tired day today.
Wish he would have pulled out "Three On The Tree" but I'm not complaining. Cooley is one funny motherfucker, and I can't wait to see him in a couple months at The EARL.
