Bonus Cuts with Patterson Hood
On his third solo album, currently in progress:

I wasn't even planning on recording it till December, and then I got a chance to go in and start on it a little early, and now I'm probably 80% done. It's got a pretty different feel overall. I was intentionally keeping this one pretty stripped down and kind of maybe somewhat quieter than a Truckers record. It's definitely a more personal, intimate record. I guess that's a better word: intimate. Not that the Truckers aren't capable of playing that way too, but the live show tends to gravitate towards that big, rock sound. This is a more intimate record. There's probably not a guitar solo anywhere on it.

DBT finally get some mainstream attention
"We actually got to take a little time off the road this summer," said Hood, whose father, bassist Dave Hood, was a longtime session musician with the famed Muscle Shoals studio band. "But I don't feel like we're over the hill yet. We're still out here playing, still releasing records, still being vital."

Patterson Hood talks Occupy Wall St, Turner Hall Show

The band’s press material talks about the great Southern tradition, “to take on the Man – or anyone else.” Is there a political element in the songs, and is this evolving in light of current events?

PH: We’ve always been a very political band, even though we usually address it in the form of telling a personal story as opposed to preaching about some cause, which basically is just preaching to the choir, something I don’t have the patience or inclination to do. I am all about the Occupy Wall Street movement, although I wish that some of the folks there didn’t act like stupid douchebags on national television. Acting like a douche does not help the cause. I try to only act like a douche in the privacy of my own home.

Awesome. Can't wait for the new solo album!!! Already my most anticipated album of 2012. Hopefully once it's released, someone can finally 'leak' the complete Waverly bootleg with all the missing songs back in the setlist. :D

Can't wait to hear Patterson's solo album, but I have to admit I am somewhat worried about the "no guitar solos" statement. I don't mean that every song should have a blazing, fret-burning solo, but even quiet songs can have a solo that adds texture. It seems Patterson is really wanting to separate himself from the "big rock sound."

I feel just the opposite. I am SO ready for another Killers and Stars from Patterson after the non-stop rock of TBTD (GGB was more my speed). I love his solo acoustic stuff and I think he's grown so much as a writer and singer since the last time he did something like this, a new solo album by Patterson already has 'album of the year' written all over it for me before I even hear a note.

An artist has to follow his inspiration. He can't worry about whether or not the audience wants heavy guitars. If he is feeling violins and pianos, that is the way to go.

You got to love that. I actually did Laugh out Loud.

I tend to agree with that, but unfortunatly for Joe Jackson, he lost his core audience, and basically his career following that philosophy. Maybe he wanted to do that.I hear now he is lobbying in Europe and the US to rescind anti-smoking laws.

jimmyjack: If I may ask, what other releases are you looking forward to in 2012? I have to admit, other than DBT, there aren't too many current bands/artists I keep up with, other than New Pornographers, Jason Isbell and Paul Westerberg. I would appreciate any suggestions you could make.

Okie, take a look at the Other Bands forum. The people on this board are some of the most knowledgeable music fans anywhere. Personally I've discovered dozens of bands through this board. The listening thread is a good place to start as well as the best of 2011 thread.

Still, a legitimate question. Well, I've always been a big Howling Hex fan, and Hagerty and co have a new album coming out on Drag City pretty soon. Not so much 'upcoming' as 'imminent,' but I can't stop listening to the new Cass McCombs album, Humor Risk (which comes out Tuesday, I believe). Imagine Lou Reed, Morrissey and Edgar Allan Poe getting together to write a pop album. It's actually better than it sounds. Brilliant.

But the prospect of a Patterson solo album's got me wanting to pre-order NOW! :D

Good interview with Cooley in the Birmingham News today. Apparently we can expect some other projects from Cooley next year:

""The band’s going to be off, as much as it can be," Cooley says. "It’s time to back away for a while. We’ve been touring — Boom! Boom! Boom! — and it’s going to be lay-low time. I’m definitely looking to do some other stuff outside the band."

Best part of the article is his support for OWS, been with the occupy Trenton for a while now, hoping the Athens occupy is still going when I get there. And the biggest doodlebugs on TV are wearing suits and currently felating other doodlebugs in NH. Ps. Yes I do have a job and I shower, in case u were wobdering

Not a OWS person myself and think a lot of their anger is misdirected but I liked what Patterson said about them needing to do what they do without acting like deuche bags about it. Kudos to Pat for that piece of advice. No matter where you stand politically I think that's something EVERYBODY would do well to remember.

Acting like a jackass does nothing to help you get your point across and people on both sides of the aisle are guilty of it in a serious way. Both just always think it's "the other side" that does it.

Thanks for podsting Kudzu. The author seems to think the Truckers are a boogie band....which they aren't.

I like the part about the "pulsating mass of Trucker maniancs." Yeah that about sums it up.

This may be old news but Patterson's "Depression Era" is available on the new Disabled Veterans and Wounded Warriors benefit album. More info here. If I'm not mistaken, "Depression Era" hasn't been made available before. I know it was used in the movie That Evening Sun but I don't think there was a soundtrack for it.

1. R.E.M. "Living Well is the Best Revenge" (Live)
2. Dead Confederate "Run from the Gun"
3. The Whigs "Half the World Away"
4. Futurebirds "Battle for Rome "
5. Hope For Agoldensummer "Come Back"
6. Gift Horse "Missionaries"
7. Drivin' N Cryin' "Scarred but Smarter"
8. Ruby Kendrick "Comin' Your Way"
9. Bloodkin "Yellow Ribbons"
10. Brute (Widespread Panic featuring Vic Chesnutt "Sleeping Man" (Live)
11. Patterson Hood "Depression Era"

Couple of new interviews as the tour kicks off, one from Patterson and a typically brief Cooley interview.

Patterson on Shonna:
"I'm sure she'll be great," he offers. "She's got great songs. I look forward to seeing what she puts out and what she does. She's an old friend and a great artist."

Rest of the article here:
http://www.westword.com/2012-03-08/musi ... theatre/2/

Cooley on the replacement bassist:
"We may end up with a third or fourth bassist, somebody rotating in or out," he says, a touch wearily. "We're still trying to figure out where to go from here."
