Actually the name stemmed more from the address of the original club: 930 F St.
Re: New Year's Eve 2011
So how about some advice for me (and the wife), who will be in from Chicago for all three shows. We are hoping to avoid renting a car and I was just wondering if any of you locals (or others) could advise whether it is wise/practical to walk from the Club to our hotel, which is a few blocks from the White House. It looks like the subway will be an option (I assume all 3 shows will be out before it shuts down for the night), but we generally like to walk places. I wouldn't mind catching a cab, but I assume that will be difficult because of the crowds, especially on NYE . . .

Re: New Year's Eve 2011
Well I can't say for sure, but based on a quick google maps glance, it's ~2 miles to the Club from the White House area. I'd walk that easily, but it all depends on your comfort in the city. The 930's surrounding area certainly isn't what you'd call classy, but I've never been nervous walking around. There are a lot of bars around, so it's a fairly busy pedestrian area.
Can't speak much for the ease of getting a cab, but I'm sure they'll be cruising around that area looking for passengers, especially NYE.
Between walking and the metro, I would think renting a car is completely unnecessary.

Shakespeare wrote:actually street parking is pretty easy around the Club. Of the few times I've driven to the 930, I've bought a parking ticket in advance once, at the door once, parked in a $20 lot across the street once, and found free street parking (literally around the corner) 3/4 other times. can't guarantee it'll be there, obviously, but there's plenty of street parking that doesn't require much walking, and even more that requires a few minutes walking.
That's cool. Personally, hate driving around and around for spots, but diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. Especially on a Friday night and NYE

Like Shakespeare said, it can be done. After the shows--I'd probably want to at least get a cab service # from the hotel. It'll be cold and late, and in a location you aren't familiar with, probably not advisable.

9:30 club isn't in the best area and to get there you might have to walk on some seedy streets...
it's walkable, but i'd advise cabbing it (although you may sit in traffic so give yourself time)

Re: New Year's Eve 2011
I'll see everyone Friday night. I'm happy to ring in the new year (close enough) with 3DD and DBT.
And for anyone interested, I stumbled on to this show on archive.org and had to share it. It's got Spooner and it's particularly smooth.

The area where the 9:30 Club is now has improved tremendously from the 80's when I was in Washington, but I would still take a cab. And, I think it's a pretty far walk from the White House area, and, unless you know the city, you still might hit some rough spots.

I've been reading a lot of George Pelecanos lately, and I can tell you there are no good neighborhoods in DC.

I'm not sure that's the message that George Pelecanos is trying to convey, and it depends on which book you read. I'm hoping he shows up at one of the shows NYE.

Thanks for all the advice. While we are fairly comfortable in the relatively sketchy areas we know, we will be in a strange city and it makes sense to cab/subway home after the shows. Especially if I am staggering out after a lethal combination of great beer/great people/great music. Hope to see you all at the shows, and keep me posted about any pre-shows activity, I'll do my best to finally meet some of you all.

As some one not really familiar with DC - I don't have two much to worry about from the club to the nearest subway stop, do I? Or is it kinda sketchy?

Re: New Year's Eve 2011
Hey guys, looking forward to spending three nights in D.C. over the holidays. I'm coming down from PA solo, and I have a buddy in Baltimore that I recently turned on to the Truckers. He is interested in going to the Thursday night show with me, but its now obviously sold out. If anyone has/knows of someone with an extra ticket please send me a pm. I told him I would find one no matter what so hopefully something works out. I know he will be officially converted once he makes a show, so here's hoping I can pull it off. Looking forward to partying with ya'll in a 7 days!!!!

Re: New Year's Eve 2011
For those of y'all still wondering what to do or see in DC, I have this per my December issue of Horse & Rider:
^^^^ That's where I'm spending one afternoon. Just a thought.
If you'll be near the Washington, D.C., area any time this year, be sure to go by the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian to catch the critically acclaimed exhibition, "A Song for a Horse Nation." The exhibition, which explores the role horses have played in Native culture from the 1500s to the present, runs through January 7, 2013. The NMAI at the Smithsonian is located at Fourth Street and Independence Avenue, S.W.

Clams---I know I'll be at Duffy's Night 2 from around 4:30 on (meeting a couple college friends early-ish who aren't coming to the show)...
UR/CG and crew are partial to Nelly's---so not sure what their plans are..
My suggestion: How about Thurs at Nelly's (across the street and a block over?) and Friday at Duffy's? (directly across the street)? C'mon UR--Duffy's has that stellar jukebox!!?
(Sat I'm sure everyone will want to line up early so I'm not sure about THAT one)
