DBT playing in The Shoals

Post by Lake Man »

In the recent interview Mike Cooley did with Blake Ells, he mentions playing in the Shoals in July...

BBS: You’ve played with some of the Shoals’ finest, including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Spooner Oldham. Will we ever see you guys work with him again?

MC: I’m sure it’ll happen again at some point. We don’t have plans for another record yet, other than that we will do one. At some point. We’re gonna do a show in the Shoals in July and we’re trying to get him to join us
.

Anyone have any details (date, venue, etc)?? Sounds like a worthwhile road trip to me!!

Going to be during the Handy Festival again from what I have heard. They booked through a different promoter than last time they played here. The festival is July 22-31 so sometime in that time frame should be when it is.

Thanks for the insight. I'll keep checking online for updates. If you hear anything else let me know because I'm think about making the trek down from Boston. :)

Hasn't there been rumors of a benefit for the tornado victims?

I'm considering doing an Iron Butt ride on my Triumph for this one if the weather is good. 1,000 miles in 24 hours or less. It is 1,000 exactly from my front door to the Shoals Theater. Maybe raise some money for the tornado victims.

Can't guarantee that I'm going to do this. But it is a thought. I've wanted to do an Iron Butt ride for some time now.

Good news. July 30th w/ Decoys and Spooner Oldham - Rockin the Blues concert at Norton Auditorium in Florence sponsored by the WC Handy Blues Festival - on their Facebook page. Donnie Fritts (?) is the first opener. That might be worth the trip from Jersey based on their last shows there (2009?). They are on LMA I know.

Website for the concert.

This is a no-alcohol facility if I'm not mistaken. That should make things interesting.

Does anyone know if a portion of the proceeds from this show go to benefit Alabama music/folklife, etc? Just wondering.

The WC Handy Foundation is putting it on with the Alabama Folklife foundation, so I would hope so. Not sure though. Looks fun.

Serious business guys, I'm getting concerned about this show. Only 23 days until the show and there are still over 1,000 tickets available. This could be embarrassing and ultimately end up with the Truckers never playing here again.

My cool aunt from NJ has a good friend named Deb Boykin who is a folklorist with the Alabama Folklife Association. (They're friends from The Band message board). The AFA is really trying to get the word out about the DBT and Decoys show and other cool events taking place on July 30 at the W.C. Handy Festival in Muscle Shoals. My aunt knows I've posted once or twice (heh heh) here on 3DD, so she and Deb have asked me to post the following info...

The Alabama Folklife Association and the W.C. Handy Music Festival are collaborating to present, Rocking the Blues: The Story of Rock in the Shoals,
Saturday, July 30, 2011 in Florence, Ala.
Author, Peter Gurlanick, will open the day with a lecture, "The Revolution That Started in Florence, Ala." followed by a panel discussion, "Passing Down the Shoals." The FREE program will take place on the campus of the University of North Alabama. Please register online at http://muscleshoalsmusic.eventbrite.com/.

Historians, authors, musicians, and recording specialists will join other scholars in a panel discussion on the legends and heritage of the Muscle Shoals Sound.
A screening of the documentary film, The Secret to a Happy Ending, with question and answer period with DBT band members will complete the afternoon's presentations. Please register and print tickets online at http://happyending.eventbrite.com/.

Rocking the Blues Concert
Drive-By Truckers with The Decoys
Tickets and further information: http://dbtconcert.eventbrite.com/
All of these programs are made possible by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the Alabama Humanities Foundation, and South Arts with sponsorship from the Alabama Folklife Association, the W.C. Handy Music Festival, University of North Alabama, and Billy Reid Clothing Store

Some other info that might be useful - The Guralnick lecture, the panel (which will include David and Patterson Hood, among others), and the film screening are free. I'm not sure who will be involved in the post-film Q & A. Tickets to the evening show are $25 and $35. There's also a $100 VIP ticket that includes a goodie bag and admission to an after-concert party at Billy Reid's in downtown Florence, which is not alcohol-free. Proceeds after expenses will go to the Alabama Folklife Association. This event came about due in part to AFA fieldwork researching Muscle Shoals music traditions. The folks are right in thinking it's an alcohol-free venue, since it's on a college campus and is thus state property. However, Norton Auditorium is the largest venue in Florence.

Deb has also asked me to post the following link to her recent telephone interview with one Patterson Hood. It's a great interview. (Click here, then you'll see a link to the stream/mp3 at the bottom of the page).
http://arts.state.al.us/actc/1/DBT.htm

If anyone has questions about the event, post them here or send me a PM and I'm sure Deb will do her best to answer them. Thanks!

We'll be there!!
This show will be at Norton Auditorium which is on the campus of my alma mater--the University of North Alabama.

Don't forget to reserve free tickets to the movie screening and the panel discussion (with Patterson and David Hood being guests).
THEY ARE FREE and before the Saturday show!!! :D
Lecture:

Movie Screening:

And check out other acts during HandyFest while you are in town:

So excited they are playing here. Sure, there is no alcohol being served, but that won't make them any less amazing. It might just mean we can hear them better and won't have drunk people running into us.

Have seen them play at Muscle Shoals High School before while being underage AND no alcohol was being served anyway. That show marked a lifetime love affair with the band, so I bet this one will be just as awesome as all of the others. ;)

Anyone getting else getting excited about this show? Have ticket sales improved any? That was a great interview. I am hoping there will be good support and turnout for this one. It seems really important to Patterson and it is a "hometown" show, too. Not too many posts on this thread so I was curious about other people's plans....

We are hoping to visit some family in north Alabama on the trip, also. (I will admit it was part if my hook to get to see the show). ;)

I'll be there. Bought my tickets the day they came available. I hope people get off their rear ends and buy tickets to this. The last two shows at the Shoals Theater had a good crowd but I think Norton is bigger. I believe it holds 1,674 and the Shoals is more like 800 or so.

Most Handy Festival events are free and are ubiquitous during that week. Perhaps that has something to do with slow ticket sales. You know, kind of an I can see tons of music for free, why pay for it attitude. I hope that's not the case b/c this show is gonna rock!

So I'm thinking about going to this one and I'm wondering whether I should get stage seating and hope that lets me hug the rail, or whether that's going to be reserved for the people with the VIP tickets and that I might just as well get a seat further back for less money. Anyone have information to help me figure it all out?

If I remember right here's not really a bad seat in the house. The front row balcony seats may be the best of all. It's been 20 years since I've been there (and worked there).

Any of yall making the trip should check out the Alabama Music Hall of Fame on hwy 72 just west of Tuscumbia.
We visited it while up there for the Dexateens and really enjoyed it. I think yall will reconize a lot of the names
on the donation bricks around the fountain out front. And if you ever wanted to get on a tour bus,
Alabama's is in the museum.
Also a little further south-west we visited the Coon Dog Cemetery :( It's a really special place :)
and that pussy Alec Baldwin blew that girl away, and speaking of pussy Steve got it all!

I was informed today by one of the event organizers that the University's video production department wants "exclusive rights" to videotape this event.
A friend who is a mod here said the band would have to approve such a deal. I hope they don't because that would prevent fans from taping. I'm not sure if this extends to audio taping as well. He hasn't said no, but it doesn't sound promising.
If the band decides to approve it, we have no choice but to abide by their wishes.
. I'm not really keen on DBT in a no-alcohol (unless you're a VIP) venue, but I don't want to pass up a home show either. Shoals Theater would have been more fun, IMHO!

This is one of the big problems I have with the Handy Festival organizers. I understand wanting to have the show available for all ages, but you can accomplish that and still provide alcohol sales at the Shoals Theater.

Also feel they do a horrible job promoting the festival until right at time for it to get started.
