Gangstabilly vs. Pizza Deliverance

Post by lost-johnny »

Just need these two LPs to complete my collection and whilst we're all suffering from the World Financial Crisis, I'm also suffering the Two Teenage Sons Financial Crisis and can only afford Gangsatbilly or Pizza Deliverance 'til pay day. So brothers & sisters, which do you recommend..?

Wow, tough question. There are more songs on PD than GB. But "The Living Bubba" is very essential. But PD has "Uncle Frank" and "Love Like This". "Panties In Your Purse" is on GB.

Nothing to swing me either way. Flip a coin. I think the two albums are very close in terms of quality.

For my money one starts fast and ends..... ah well with a penis..... and the other one starts a little slow and builds and builds and for my money is more critical in understanding the rawk show that you see today. You are going to get them both anyway so....... flip a coin and if it is tales facing up get GB!!!!

If you put a gun to my head, I'd probably say Pizza Deliverance. But really, like the others have said you might as well just flip a coin.

Pizza Deliverance, hands down.... Cooley's contributions make this a *must have*.... Gangstabilly is good in its own right, but if you ask me is a step behind Pizza Deliverance.

PD's the better album, GB's got "The Living Bubba," plus "Panties in Your Purse" and "Buttholeville." If it were me, I'd let the boys eat Kraft dinner one more time & buy both albums. After all, you're responsible for their cultural as well as physical sustenance.

Yep.
But if you positively absolutely can buy only one, go with Pizza Deliverance now and stop sweating it, because you know you'll get them both at some point.

Interesting, I think if you took both albums you could turn 2 great albums into a masterpiece.... I smell new topic!

I don't know if it is blasphemy. The two albums are not all that different from each other, so putting the strongest cuts from each on a single album would not be all that radical. Still, even the cuts from each album that are not up to "The Living Bubba" or "Uncle Frank" still rock. So I don't know if I would want one five star album at the expense of two four star albums.

Guess I'll duck along with you.
Granted they're few, but the only songs in the whole DBT cannon that I just can't listen to are on these two albums.

PD for me.

And if ducking is to become a pastime around here, I dont reckon The Living Bubba is all that amazing a song. Sure its a neat little tune, but if Patterson didn't rate it so highly would everybody else?

My loving of this song has nothing to do with Patterson's thoughts. The first time I heard it was live and it blew me the fuck away. It's an amazing celebration of life and a fuck you to living it to anything less than the fullest. It is by far and away my favorite DBT song. For a songwriter you can only hope you get one of these in your career.

I wake up tired & I wake up pissed
Wonder how I ended up like this
I wonder why things happen like they do

To me, it doesn't get much better than that.

I like PD better (mainly 'coz of Love Like This), but both of these are essential. johnny, if you're really in a pinch I will gladly send you enough moola to get both. No DBT fan should be deprived of these great songs.

If I'm not mistaken, Patterson has said he doesn't particularly care for "Demonic Possession". Well, I for one, LOVE it. Same for "The Living Bubba". He also doesn't seem to think too highly of Gangstabilly either but that doesn't stop me from naming it as my favorite DBTs record.

As someone who is living that song, Patterson nailed it. That song was the first song Patterson wrote that transcended rock and roll. It is truth, plain and simple. The human spirit is far stronger than the bad things that happen to us. Doing what you love despite any impending death is always the right thing. The disease can kill the man but it will not defeat him. You can't get any more powerful than that.

The song is worthy of Chekhov, Hemingway ("The Undefeated"), Raymond Carver and Tobias Wolff.

"I can't die now because I've got a show to do."

Someone is going to sing that song at my funeral. And they will leave the cussing in no matter what the bishop says.

PD.

GB is more consistent, but PD has more top shelf songs. It also has President's Penis, GG Allin, and Mrs. Dubose. There aren't any really subpar songs on GB, but Bubba (and maybe Panties) is the only transcendent one. However, there's no "filler" (awaits TC to show up at my door step w/a shotgun. After all, it's only a 5 hour drive).

I remember back when I went and picked up both of these albums the same day and both of them where instantly among my favorites so you simply cant go wrong either way ...but if I had to pick just one Pizza Deliverance would be it.

Bulldozers and Dirt
Nine Bullets
Uncle Frank
Too Much Sex (Too Little Jesus)
Box of Spiders
One of These Days
Margo and Harold
The Company I Keep
The President's Penis Is Missing
Tales Facing Up
Love Like This
Mrs. Dubose
Zoloft
The Night G.G. Allin Came to Town

Minus Mrs. Dubose, all these songs stand up and I crave at every DBT show. President's provides a late mid-album transition that makes me chuckle and all the rest are stellar.

In the immortal words of Kurt Russell (as Jack Burton in BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA) I was BORN ready.

OK, whats your tracklist for Gangsta Deliverance?

it better have Buttholeville in it. All I'm saying.
I've never taken a pissbreak during a DBT show but if I had it would have been during Dancing Ricky.
