Steve McQueen

Post by Sterling Big Mouth »

One of my favorite movie scenes is from A Bronx Tale, when the bikers come to Sonny's bar. After the bikers get rowdy, Sonny steps in, shuts the door and says, "now, you's can't leave." The bikers immediately knew they had walked into a world of shit and proceeded to get their asses beaten. Sonny's line was a crossing the Rubicon of sorts. One second everything's white, the next it's fucking black.

Steve McQueen was the same way for me. I'd never heard of the Truckers before then, but once I heard this band with a pedal steel playing balls out riffs with a possessed voice on top, I knew I'd finally found some new shit to go along with my favorites, Skynyrd and Zeppelin. Steve McQueen led me to Nine Bullets which led me to SRO. To quote LTBR, the rest as they say is history.

Clams' post about favorite Patterson songs got me thinking about all this and how 'ol Steve still ranks up there with anything in my book. See everyone at the Bowery and profound thanks to the Show for coming back to New York so soon after NYE.

I think they should bring back the Steve McQueen tapestry if only to unfurl it during performances of the song like Skynyrd does with the Confederate flag during "Sweet Home Alabama". Or maybe not, I do miss the days of the tapestry though.

Unbeknownst to me, the great Don Winslow's latest book, Broken, is a collection of short stories. The second story is called "For Mr. Steve McQueen." The song would be a fitting soundtrack for the story.
