Best places to eat in Athens?
Hey everybody. I'm new to the forums. I've been following the Truckers for the last few years and they quickly became my favorite band. I'm headed to the Thursday and Friday in Athens. Driving down from Charlotte. I grew up in Georgia but haven't been to Athens in years. My birthday is Friday (b-day plug) so that show will be special to me. My main question is what are some good places to eat in Athens? I try to eat healthy but that isn't as much of a concern on this trip. Thanks in advance. I can't wait for the Rock Show to start.

The Indian place had a good lunch buffet when I hit it up last year. Weaver D's is a pretty historic place as well.

Cali & Titos for lunch definitely...
Never going back to Buttholeville. (Good luck with that!)
Re: Best places to eat in Athens?
The Grit is a good place to go if yr looking for healthy. Last year was the 1st year i went & i was recommened Clocked for it's burgers & onion rings...it's like 1/2 a block down from the 40 Watt & it was pretty good.
Just cause I don't run my mouth don't mean I got nothing to say...
Re: Best places to eat in Athens?
Thanks everybody. Glad to hear all of your suggestions. They all sound good.

All this stuff is pretty close to the 40Watt. Athens downtown is pretty compact.

Link to a review of Cali & Titos. Its not really close to the 40 Watt, but not far off the path, just down Lumpkin past Georgia Center and UGA athletic practice fields etc... I often work at UGA and this is always where we go to lunch. I love the fish burritos with sweet plantains, special sauce and papas fritas...yum. BTW - Its cash only.

Best bbq in Athens?
I know about Fox's in Atlanta but i'm looking for something a little more local.
But speaking of fox's, where is it in relation to ATL? Like, could one stop on the way to the airport w/out setting back the timetable too badly?
Thanks.

Re: Best places to eat in Athens?
I would suggest that folks take a quick 2 mile drive to Royal Peasant in Five Points. Take Broad Street/Atlanta Hwy to Milledge (L) to Lumpkin (R). Royal Peasant is on your left after Five Points Bottle Shop (which has an awesome beer/wine/liquor selection).
Awesome English Pub with great food and drinks.

Re: Best places to eat in Athens?
I also think Blind Pig Tavern has the best burgers in town plus the jalapeno cheddar fries. I've tried Clocked and The Grill and the Feta Fries are so 2010.

Jot Em Down! No question.

Take Broad to Milledge (L) and go 2-3 miles just before the Loop to Macon Highway (R). Jot Em Down is on your right.
Re: Best places to eat in Athens?
Thanks again everybody for all the great recommendations. I can't wait to get there tomorrow.

Butt Hutt is the latest king of BBQ.
Down Baxter Street.

Re: Best places to eat in Athens?
Ditto on The Grit - it's vegetarian, but you gotta eat there at least once. Brunch is awesome.
IMHO, the best BBQ sandwich in Athens is at White Tiger. Everything I have had there is excellent - homemade chocolates, even! Hours are variable, so check the website, but it's well worth traveling the few blocks outside of downtown to eat there.
http://whitetigergourmet.squarespace.com/
There's a new BBQ place downtown, small (mostly carry-out) and only open on Thur Fri and Sat nights but open late. I've been there twice and it's great. It's on Hancock next to Gigworn (a cool vintage clothing store) but I can't remember the name of it. DEFINITELY worth checking out for those late night meat cravings.
Clocked, The Globe, and The Grill all have good burgers and pub food.
Big City Bread has fantastic burgers, great breakfast pastries and all kinds of other stuff at dinner - we ate 5 different kinds of meat on out last visit.
Little Italy has cheap but good pizza and subs, and Transmet takes it up a notch in quality and price, although I greatly prefer Little Italy's whole pies.
Taste of India has a good buffet, and Eat Hibatchi and Thai Spoon are two of my favorites downtown.
Picantes is my favorite Mexican place downtown, but if you can get out, go to Senior Sol - it's fantastic. Possibly my favorite place in town!
There's also a Mexican place on Chase near the chicken plant - I cannot remember the name of it, but folks who eat there say it's the bomb.
Of course for the nicer meals, go to locally grown restaurant Farm255, or The National (right next to Cine, where they're showing the DBT documentary).
Ike and Jane's on Prince has a peanut butter, banana and bacon donut.
Wilson's has some excellent soul food to soak up your alcohol, but I don't think they're open on Sunday.
Y'all be careful now! See you tonight!

Re: Best places to eat in Athens?
We ate at a great Thai place last year, but the name escapes me.
Re: Best places to eat in Athens?
Amici on Clayton has the best wings in town, hands down.

Re: Best places to eat in Athens?
Has anyone mentioned The Last Resort? I tried it the last time I was in town (which has been far too long ago) and really enjoyed it. It has an upscale feel but the prices were very reasonable, the service was outstanding and the food was absolutely delectable.
Re: Best places to eat in Athens?
The place on Chase that I mentioned previously has a name and a fan: Mr. Hood (actually, just about everyone in band and crew love this place). Here's what he says:
Y'ALL:
If you'd like to post to the travelers from afar about food in Athens
My new favorite restaurant it
TLALOC MEXICANO
It's cheap and fantastic.
It claims to be Mexican but is really El Salvadorian and their slant on the trad Mex restaurant is super excellent.
Especially the Tamales which are wrapped in banana leaves instead of corn making them sweet and amazing.
It's close to everything, albeit slightly off the beaten trail.
From 40 Watt, go north on Pulaski, take left on Prince, go past Grit (which of course I love) until the Kangaroo station.
Take right on Chase, its about halfway down the hill across from the old water tower and chicken plant.
The signage is confusing but it has Mexican written big and is a dump to look at.
A Mom and Pop in the grandest sense (Mom, Dad, Brothers and SIster) and cheap.
Having liquor lic. issues so right now no beer, but still worth it.
ENJOY!

I'm on foot and if anyone is planning a trip there and is up for another rider/diner, give me a yell. I'm at the Daze Inn.
