Whales (songs never seen live)

Post by Mundane Mayhem »

Was just updating my personal show stats and did a little filter for the DBT songs I haven't caught yet. Looking through that list, the ones that stood out were "Mercy Buckets," "Birmingham," "Life in the Factory," and "Margo and Harold."

"Carl Perkins" too, though I've at least seen Cooley play that one solo three times. Ditto "Southern Thing." I've seen Hood play it solo once, but never full band.

What songs have you not seen live that you'd like to?
All it takes is one wicked heart, a pile of money, and a chain of folks just doing their jobs

Any Cooley song that in 2018 is considered a rarity, really. How he can rotate the same 25 songs show after show and totally leave cuts like Carl Perkins, Cottonseed, Daddy's Cup, Loaded Gun, and the rest of the like on the shelf is just too bad. Seems the only rarities/surprised are those that come from P. Hood. At least someone is doing it!

Always wanted to hear the band play The Southern Thing. They played it in Richmond when I was outside on a smoke break. Angry. Very angry. Finally caught it. What a relief!

Chased Steve McQueen for a long time. I mentioned how I'd never heard it before in a thread the day before the Charlottesville show and then they played it. I always assumed Jenn had something to do with that. Big thanks to whoever made that happen.

I remember finally hearing One Of These Days. Jesus that felt good.

Shit, I still haven't seen them do Angels & Fuselage yet
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

It's a testament to how much they change things up when you see people are chasing songs that you have seen many times. I don't know how many times I've seen Carl Perkins played but it's a bunch. Same deal with Southern Thing. Oddly enough I did chase Angels and Fuselage for a long time and it has to be one of the songs they have played the most.

I've been lucky as far as catching some rare ones. I've gotten Margo and Harlod, Sandwiches For The Road, G.G. Allin, The Great Car Dealer War, Wednesday, When The Pin Hits The Shell, Three Alabama Icons, just off the top of my head. and I haven't gone to anywhere near the volume of shows a lot of people here go to for several years.

Not to mention songs from English Oceans that it seems like Cooley may never play again.

I chased Birmingham for years until I got it in 2016.

I have never gotten Demonic Possession.

Oneofthesedays.org says Don’t Cock Block The Rock was played at Homecoming in 2015. I was there and don’t recall this being played.

Searching back through our 3DD setlists from the date in question, that position was occupied by Patterson's 18 cover. That sounds correct.

Uncle Rickey doesn’t remember hearing it either. Pretty sure we aren’t both mistaken on this.

In the spot where Oneofthesedays.org has got Don't Cock Block the Rock, recordings on Archive.org has I'm Eighteen. Just listened to confirm the latter is correct.

I would imagine the list of songs that Bill and Rickey are chasing would form the Mt. Rushmore of DBT rarities...

They're wrong. I was at those shows & there are recordings.

oneofthesedays.org is fantastic but for the years the website was AWOL their stats are a little shaky.

The only 4 I'm REALLY chasing, but will probably never get, are these:

A Blessing and a Curse
Nine Bullets
Daddy's Cup (for Tracy, it's my least favorite from TDS)
Cottonseed

I wouldn't be surprised if you got Nine Bullets or Cottonseed. Those do get played on occasion, especially (or so I'd say) when the band wants to or has to play acousticish for one reason or another.

Cottenseed last played 2015, Nine Bullets last played 2011.

For me, some of these are kinda of sort of possible, some I never expect (but would love to be proven wrong). This list is exhaustive (not counting people no longer in the band, or covers), because it's 3:30AM and I can't sleep. (*) indicates a song I've seen at a solo show, but not full band.

Birmingham (Going to all 3 B'Ham shows in November... expect to cross this one off)
Daddy's Cup
Cottenseed (*)
Boys from Alabama
Careless
Lisa's Birthday
G'ville to BR
Loaded Gun in the Closet
Great Car Dealer War
Perfect Timing
Mr's Clauses Kimono
Monument Valley
Don't Cock Block the Rock
Blessing and A Curse
Goodbye
Sun Don't Shine
218 To Denver
President's Penis
Demonic Possession
The Distance
Little Pony and Great Big Horse
Blue Law Blues
I Got a 45 to Pay My Rent
Forged in Hell And Heaven Sent (*)
Little Bonnie (*)
Picture of Elvis
Grudge Fuck
Three on the Tree

Birthday Boy
Nine Bullets
Play it All Night Long
Carl Perkins' Cadillac
The Fourth Night of My Drinking
Hearing Jimmy Loud

I had to think pretty hard. I've been lucky enough to already hear most all of my top, top favorites.

I'm out west, and I've still somehow managed to see all of those.

Same here because I have seen the overwhelming majority of whales referenced in this thread. And while I have seen a lot of DBT shows, my total is still only around the number of shows Bill sees every 2-2.5 years

In all seriousness, when this thread popped up I was gonna post Like a Rolling Stone
