World of Hurt
Grand Canyon
Angels & Fuselage
Mercy Buckets
Monument Valley
GG Allin
Goddamn Lonely Love
Loaded Gun In The Closet
Sandwiches for the Road
Eyes Like Glue

that's some tough ranking though as every single DBT release finishes with a great closer, with a possible exception for Eyes Like Glue which is a great song but doesn't quite work there at the end.

7/10 I consider great closers and great songs.

The last 3 in my rankings I consider to be neither great closers or great songs. The songs aren't bad songs, but I just don't think they hold a candle to the others. They certainly don't fit the closing of the albums they'[re on, in my mind. If Girls Who Smoke closed TBTD, it would be 8/10 for great closers and great songs.

7. Monument Valley

In my mind, there's a pretty big disparity between 1-6 and 7-10.

Wow. Not a lot of love for GG Allin or Monument Valley huh? Those two rank pretty highly for me a songs apart from being closers. GG Allin just plain makes me smile and the lyrics and harmonies on Monument Valley are top shelf IMHO. This is as strong a lyrical passage as you'll find anywhere:

It’s a strong wind blowing on the open range
It’s gonna be beautiful and it’s gonna be strange
It’s where to plant the camera and when to say action
When to print the legend and when to leave the facts in
And when to turn your back on the comforts of home
And wander round The Monument Valley alone

Hey, but we've all got our tastes so it's all good.

GG Allin is funny as hell, but it's kinda bland musically for me. There's no melody and it kinda plods. The thing that keeps PD from being a top shelf DBT album for me is the way it just kinda fizzles out on the last third of the record. I definitely smile when I listen to GG Allin, but I don't feel the desire to listen to it very often at all.

Monument Valley has just never struck me either. There's some pretty harmonies, and individual parts, but it seems like a let down after the monster that is "A Ghost to Most". If they end it on "A Ghost to Most", it's right at the top.

That's how it plays out in my mind, anyhow.

Well to me Ghost to Most is not a closer so that's where we differ. Closers should be mid tempo or even ballads with pretty instrumentals and a "fade to black" quality to them. Rockers should never close an album. Just my thoughts.

I don't know if I'd call "A Ghost to Most" a full-on rocker. I think the outro of "Mercy Buckets" rocks pretty good ("soars" may be more appropriate).

I do generally agree with you on what creates a proper album closer.

Angels & Fuselage (In a class by itself.)
Mercy Buckets
Monument Valley
Eyes Like Glue
Goddamn Lonely Love (There is approximately zero distance between the last four. I could pick them in any order.)
World of Hurt (Which is just a killer live.)
Loaded Gun In The Closet (Someone has to be last.)

I don't know these records well enough to say:
Sandwiches for the Road
GG Allin

Too soon to know (plus my first copy stopped a minute into the song, so I haven't heard it as much)
Grand Canyon
The sooner we put those assholes in the grave&piss on the dirt above it, the better off we'll be

Goddamn Lonely Love
World of Hurt (This gets top billing if we are talking live, but IMO the album version lacks just a tad especially by comparison.)
Angels & Fuselage
Grand Canyon
Mercy Buckets
Monument Valley

Loaded Gun In The Closet
GG Allin
Sandwiches for the Road
Eyes Like Glue
Never going back to Buttholeville. (Good luck with that!)

GG Allin. One of my favorite tracks from that album. I really hope to hear it this HC.

"Loaded Gun" is in its own category for me. I love this song and think it's one of DBT's/Cooley's greatest, but I've never liked it as the album closer. Not totally sure why, maybe because it's idiosyncratic enough that it doesn't feel like any kind of summation or wrap up, maybe because its ambiguity leaves one more hanging than satisfied, maybe I just don't know why. In any case, I can't put it at the top of a list dedicated to album closers but I can't put it anywhere else, either lol.

"Monument Valley" is kind of the opposite - a very good song which gains something extra by its closing position.

INPO, GLL, A&F, Mercy Buckets and Grand Canyon are all classics - great songs, perfect closers.

I agree w/ GMU re "World of Hurt" - if the live version were the album version it'd be right near the top, but the album version is good but not great to me.

The others are various shades of ok or a bit less than that.

I've always thought Checkout Time in Vegas would have been a better closer than Monument Valley, same with Love Like This instead of GG Allin. Just so nobody says I don't like Cooley's songs :P
Heading to HC Friday and Saturday - first timer!

Maybe because DD was my first real introduction to DBT (I had SRO but really drug my feet getting into it), but I consider it the perfect closer to DD. It's beautiful, evocative of folks I (we all, probably) know, ambiguous but while not at all uplifting, it ends a record filled with death and despair with not exactly a hopeful ending, but a nice, realistic reprieve from all that came before it. The open-endedness of it really makes you look forward to what's next too.

For me it's something like this:

1. Angels & Fuselage
2. A World of Hurt

- "A World of Hurt" is very close to me, also got it tattooed on my arm and it's one my top favorite DBT songs. But "Angels" is still a better last song. Especially in the album he's ending. It's one of the perfect and most beautiful/emotionaly ending to an albums I know.

3. Goddamn Lonely Love

- Also a big favorite of mine. Little less than the first two, but way more than the others.

4. The Monument Valley
5. Mercy Buckets
6. Sandwiches For the Road
7. Loaded Gun In the Closet

- Always liked "Monument" and some stuff in it ("History is made by the side of the road" was always a quote I really loved there). Hm and Mercy Buckets and the other two are great, but a bit less as a final song.

8. The Night G.G. Allin Came to Town
9. Eyes Like Glue

Havn't heard Grand Canyon yet cause I'm waitng to the album to come out :)

1. Sandwiches for the Road
2. Angels & Fuselage
3. A World of Hurt
4. Like a Rolling Stone (I'm counting it! The only DBT song with 4 leads; love love love it)
5. Mercy Buckets
6. Goddamn Lonely Love
7. Grand Canyon
8. Eyes Like Glue (I think it works better here than most)
9. Loaded Gun in the Closet
10. Monument Valley
11. The Night GG Allin Came to Town

I like all these songs to one degree or another, and I LOVED GG Allin when they played it live in Boston. Angels WOULD be #1 if I could listen to it all the time, but it's so emotionally wrenching, I can't do it. "It's Great to Be Alive" is tattooed to my arm, so WOH is very important to me, as is "Mercy Buckets." I got The Fine Print early in my DBT awakening, and hearing Patterson, Jason, Shonna, and Cooley all trading off leads and singing as one at the end of "Rolling Stone" was very powerful for me, so I couldn't not include it.

It's tough because I think the object is to list them in the order of how well they function as closers but I always get hung up on which ones I like the best as individual songs. Ill try to do it in the way it was intended.

Angels and Fuselage
Loaded Gun In The Closet
Sandwiches For The Road
Monument Valley
GDLL
Mercy Buckets
World of Hurt
GG Allin
Eyes Like Glue

Not sure where I rank Grand Canyon yet but it is near the top.

I seem to like Sandwiches For The Road a lot more than a lot of people. It's actually o e of my very favorite Patterson songs. I like World of Hurt live but have never thought it was anything special on record. I have similar feelings about Mercy Buckets. I agree with Iowan on GG Allin. I laugh when I listen to it. The image of a hung over Patterson and Cooley ready to get out of Memphis, sitting there in a resteraunts laughing at the conversation going on next to them priceless. But I don't find myself wanting to listen to it all that often. It's usually when I'm listening g to PD at home and I'm busy doing something and don't think about skipping it that I end up listening to the whole thing,
