Lowrey organ for Garth. Yes, I'm a nitpicker... I aaaalllllmost didn't list Garth but then i figured who the fuck would know the difference, an organ is an organ, right? (Not that i knew what he played but I figured I'd wing it). I shoulda known better. And isn't it past your bedtime or something? ...

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

I'd like to see them toss that Hammond into a dumpster. Only Rick Wright, Bob Dylan, and Greg Allman should be allowed to have one (RIP Rick). Wow. I love Jay on the Hammond. Not only do I love jay on the hammond, I think he uses it to great effect and w/ great restraint on English Oceans. Totally ...

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

I disagree. WWWC just ends suddenly. Every great DBT closer has an extended instrumental outro (A&F, World of Hurt, Sandwiches). Also, WWWC has to be the most depressing song on the album, and closing with it wouldn't provide a satisfying closer. Obviously, Grand Canyon is no "All You Need...

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

IMHO, "Grand Canyon" is not the album's emotional ending. In fact, I think the album would be better without it. The true ending for me is "When Walter Went Crazy". Such an amazing closing-curtains melody and strong lyrical imagery. And the ending lyrics? Perfect way to close an...

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

Top 3 DBT for me along with SRO & ABAAC. I agree with with Shoggoth on one point only: This is no AAW or SRO in terms of guitars and mixing. But I think it's appropriate with the middle-age themes running through the album. English Oceans to me is the sequel from ABAAC; it feels older (no offens...

Re: Favorite Third Guitarist?

I should clarify: By third guitarist I meant guitarist other than Cooley & Hood, even if they played more solos (like Jason). Also, this thread was meant to be limited to regular guitar playing... if you take away Neff's pedal steel, what memorable guitar parts did he have? IMO, they pale in com...

First Air of Autumn Chords

Thanks to RevMatt for writing out the lyrics. Tuned down one whole step. The non-strumming guitar (Patterson's I presume) plays this riff over the first part of the chord progression (F C), followed by regular fingerpicking for the rest of the progression, starting with Am: D(Normally E string)---3h...

Favorite Third Guitarist?

When I was listening to SRO last night, it struck me that Rob Malone's GREAT guitar playing is often forgotten because of his singing. His solos on 72 & Zip City are great. The wah-wah on One of These Days is pretty cool as well. My third guitarist rankings (didn't take pedal steel into account)...

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

There is a a lot of talk about it being a Cooley album or this or that. A few observations I nôticed with a few listens. Patterson's writing for all of his songs is very consistent. Grand Canyon is epic many have said. For me however it is really a Jay Gonzalez party. I absolutely love what he adde...

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

All this reading about this new album is getting my psyched for March. I have a question for people who have heard it, if you could compare it to any of their older albums which would it be? Sorry if this question has been asked. Musically, I'd say ABAAC. Lyrically I'd say Decoration Day, as the so...
