Re: Rock and Roll Cage Match 5: Replacements vs. Husker Du

Tough one. I love both bands. I came to Hüsker Dü years before The Replacements. I don't have all albums by any of the two in my collection. But I think I side with TC on this. The Mats get my vote for the songs. Songwriters who write "campfire" songs that work on an acoustic always impres...

Re: Jason Isbell question.

Cooley is my favorite song writer of the three. That was the case from day one. I love a lot of Patterson's songs. But to me he has more songs that I skip than Jason and definitely more than Cooley. I don't think I skip any of Cooley's songs. It's all a matter of opinion. Patterson may have more th...

Re: Kevin Kinney & The Golden Palominos cover Never G

For some reason I connect The Golden Palominos with Jim Campilongo. Why is that? I always thought they were a collective of musicians that revolved around Anton Fier. I only have one Golden Palominos album ( Visions of Excess ) but according to their bio at AllMusic.com, a collective is pretty much...

Re: Feature of the Week (2/20/12) Johnny Marr

Johnny Marr is a great guitarist and his licks give them their sound. I got some tabs of their songs way back and couldn't play any of them. Just too complicated for my brain. I also saw Johnny with Modest Mouse and was impressed. I was dragged to that show kicking and screaming but at least I saw ...

Re: dbt track # 90 The President's Penis Is Missing

Not one of my favourites either, and I normally do not gravitate towards music that was written with the intention to be funny and humorous. However I see this as an example of Pattersons ability to sit down and write a song that follows an idea and in a very uncompromision way is able to communicat...

Re: One Week One Band DBT Blogging

I had a conversation with Robert Christgau at a DBT show. I didn't realize who he was until I saw his picture a few weeks later. We both took seats near the corner and talked about DBT and other great bands. He asked me what my fave DBT album was and I told him that changed everyday. I tend to be s...

Re: Feature of the Week (2/20/12) Johnny Marr

I pretty much missed the boat on The Smiths back in the 80s but I did see Johnny Marr sitting in with R.E.M. on "Fall On Me" during a couple of dates on their final tour in 2008. I'm envious... As mentioned in a previous post, I saw Morrissey, but I never saw Marr. I was hoping that eithe...

Re: Feature of the Week (2/20/12) Johnny Marr

I hated the Smiths in the '80's and Morrisey. the description "whiny puss" is spot on. Fucking shoegazer, teen angst when you're 27 (or 47!) bullshit. We're here for the rock and roll, man! Marr is awesome though. sorry but the shoegazer tag is woefully off target here. angst, ok. You got...

Re: Feature of the Week (2/20/12) Johnny Marr

When I was back in England in 1995 both Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke sued Johnny Marr and Morrisey for more royalties from the Smiths. One of them settled and the other went to court and possibly won. I always thought there was friction between Marr and Morrisey, but, apparantly, Marr really didn't g...

Agreed. There are so many Oasis b-sides that blow away their album songs..same for The Smiths--he's definitely Noel's hero. Great write-up, Trym! Glad you mentioned his work with Kirsty MacColl: I always loved this song and had no idea he co-wrote it..(stupid video but love the song--also loved her...

Feature of the Week (2/20/12) Johnny Marr

Johnny Marr – the melodic power of 80’s alternative “super group” The Smiths and later on ’hired gun’ for an impressive list of other artists; The Pretenders, Talking Heads, Billy Bragg, The The, Roxy Music, Modest Mouse and The Cribs . Introduction The initial idea was to write about The Smiths onl...

Rattle and Hum doesn't stand the test of time that well in my book. I got it on vinyl almost the day it was released and I think I wore it out within 6 months almost. I totally got the idea, and at the time really believed in what they were trying to do with that album; to tap into the heritage of &...
