Re: Let's Start the Rock & Roll HoF from Scratch: Criteria

There are a few things new Rock and Roll HoF would need to avoid that plagues the other HoF. 1) Accept the fact that African American musicians by and large stopped playing rock or rock and roll after the 1970's. Pop, disco, R&B, hip hop, club music are largely producer driven. Perhaps I would i...

Re: Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Nominations for 2015 Announced

They'll come a day when the pickings are slim and only then do I see the alt. country & southern rock bands listed getting in, if then. I think two or three alt.country bands will get in once the generation of writers, artists, dj's, etc... who came of age listening to the No Depression bands r...

Re: Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Nominations for 2015 Announced

The Jayhawks will never be in the HoF. Soul Asylum has a far greater chance. Sadly, I believe you're right. If the RRHOF considers alt.country the same way they did southern rock they will induct three bands. In the southern rock subgenre Skynyrd, Allman Brothers and ZZ Top are in while The Outlaws...

Re: Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Nominations for 2015 Announced

The HOF requires 25 years after a band's first release. So the 2016 class will be someone whose first record came out in 1991. So for alt.country The Jayhawks, Uncle Tupelo and Lucinda Williams are all eligible. Steve Earle has been eligible since 2011 if you go by Guitar Town . Whiskeytown/Ryan Ada...

Re: Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Nominations for 2015 Announced

I am happy that Stevie Ray Vaughn is finally in. Updated list of my most egregious snubs. 1) The Swampers -- I don't have to make a case for David Hood and company on this board but I would venture to guess that many participants here assumed they were already in the hall. 2) Paul Revere and The Rai...

Re: Earliest Album From Youth That Still Connects With You

When I was in fifth grade I became obsessed with all things Jefferson Airplane/Starship. That was the summer Red Octopus came out. Within a year I had most of their discography. The music still connects with me but in a different way. Back then I was really into the political songs by Grace Slick an...

Re: Earliest Album From Youth That Still Connects With You

Christmas morning 1972. Eight years old. The telltale shape of a record album warpped green and red paper. I unwrap it. It is a German pressing of the UK version of The Beatles A Hard Day's Night (I believe my father bought this record from the high end stereo shop in our town, not the record store....

Re: New Cooley Song - 218 To Denver

Wow. At risk of getting all kinds of shit for hyperbole, I have to say that this song recalls the simple eloquence of Kris Kristofferson's best work. Cooley, Hood and Isbell are three of the best songwriters of my generation -- well, technically Isbell is from the generation behind me but he did his...

I am anticipating a buying spree in the next couple weeks so I will withhold my list. Overall, it has been a fantastic year for new releases. I suspect I will be discovering great 2014 albums well into 2015. One thing that stands out in my mind is that 2014 has been one of the strongest years for fe...

I hate to be such a stickler but Dylan only did one tour with The Dead, and it was a short one at that, It was just six shows in July of 1987. I didn't see anyone say differently. I've heard the boots from the tour and a better album probably could have been produced from it. That's all. The rest o...

I am currently reading Time Out of Mind: The Lives of Bob Dylan . It is the second volume of Ian Bell's biography and covers his life and body of work from Blood On The Tracks to the present. He pays close attention to Dylan's "lost decade": the 80's. Most biographers skip over this period...

Re: Artist of the Week 10.18.2014-- Bob Dylan

A few random conclusions I have come to regarding the phenomenon called "Bob Dylan." -- Dylan was unprecedented. At least in music. He emerged at a time when so-called "young people" (the post-war baby boomers) were coming of age. This is one reason why he was misunderstood, espe...

As far as being a fan goes, I make a concerted effort to help out bands I like who are on the van tour level. I offer them a place to stay when they are in town and try to get a group of friends to go out to their shows. Usually the door for these bands is somewhere between five and ten dollars. I a...

Re: Artist of the Week 10.18.2014-- Bob Dylan

I am currently reading Ian Bell's Dylan books. An interesting thing I hadn't previously considered. Catching McMurtry tonight at The Melting Point in Athens. McMurtry on Thurs, DBT on Friday. That's three of my top ten favorite songwriters in two days. I don't think you can beat that. Maybe in the 60's you could have caught The Beatles and Dylan two nights back to back.

Self Portrait got a whole lot of love in the rock press when it was reissued a year or so ago. 80's Dylan is his most neglected era. Underrated. Oh Mercy and Infidels are the two best in the bunch, IMO. Infidels would have been a top tier Dylan album if he'd put "Blind Willie McTell" on t...

Blood on the Tracks is my favorite Dylan record but Desire is nearly as good and I think suffers in the discography more because of what it follows than it's own merits. I thought about leaving that paragraph out but decided not to strike it. A big part of people's reaction to Dylan in the early part of his career had to do with the protest songs and the way he pretty much stopped writing them after "The Times They Are A Changing". His earliest fan base fe...

Re: Artist of the Week 10.18.2014-- Bob Dylan

When Bob Dylan emerged at the dawn of the sixties there were no precedents. He was a folk singer who, early on, broke the rules of the genre by being a composer (albeit one who borrowed liberally from "the tradition") instead of an interpreter. Not even old enough to vote when John Hammond...
