This album is flooring me. Heavy on the punk. Heavy on the country. Lots of nods to early Old 97’s and The Hangdogs.

https://omnivorerecordings.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Old-97-Too-Far-To-Care-OV-45.jpg Too Far to Care is 25 today. I was a couple years late to the album. I had seen them on Austin City Limits in 1998 with Whiskeytown and liked what I heard but didn't check them out. At that time, I was still ...

Besides XIII this has been in heavy rotation lately

Nothing fancy - just occasionally brilliant and always catchy heartland rock with a little country to it.

Re: Welcome to Club XIII

Patterson isn’t always a big melody guy, but there’s a very sneaky hook here. One of the mysteries of this album to me is that there aren't a whole lot of traditional hooks but damn there are a lot of ear worms coming from a lot of different songs. I've got parts of one or another of these songs in...

Re: Welcome to Club XIII

I didn’t like Maria on my first listen, but I’ve found the verse to be subversively catchy. It pops in my head a lot.

It’s not anywhere near Cooley’s best song, but I dig it. ESSF being it’s only comparison point doesn’t do it any favors.

Re: Welcome to Club XIII

It’s been 10 years since Heat Lightning, and in a way it feels like Patterson is kind of revisiting that material and putting a bow on his young adulthood. His writing on both this and that are heavily focused on the AHC years, or at least examining the characters of that time in his life and where ...

Re: Welcome to Club XIII

“Shake & Pine” has wormed its way into my brain in a big way. Patterson isn’t always a big melody guy, but there’s a very sneaky hook here. There’s a vibe that reminds me of the best of Heat Lightning here. It hits me in the same way “Better Off Without” and “Disappear” did. Autumnal. Weary, but po...

Welcome to Club XIII

I actually think this is one of the most “DBT” style songs from Patterson in awhile. A lot of his post Heat Lightning stuff has a similar vein to what he mined there. I do agree this would fit on Murdering Oscar, but I also think most of Murdering Oscar would work seamlessly with DBT and I wish they...

Re: Welcome to Club XIII

I agree with the observation that there have been a lot of DBT Patterson songs in the past decade that sound like his solo work. He still has a few total PH/DBT songs up his sleeve on every album, but the vibe from Heat Lightning comes out all over the place still. It’s not a bad thing (I love Rosem...

Re: Every Single Storied Flameout-New Cooley Song

I’m on a drive just cranking this and Club 13 back and forth. Between the energized performances here and the excellent Freed artwork it feels like a euphoric return to form. Which feels weird to say because I thought AB and The Unraveling were really good albums. But I feel good after listening to ...

Never in my wildest dreams would I ever imagine that NC band Sidewinder would ever receive a shout out in a song. Excited for a new album but I am not feeling the single Welcome to Club XIII. Kinda boring and the same sing song melody. Hopeful for the rest. That was my thought on the first listen. Liked it quite a bit after a few more spins. If nothing, it’s at least pretty catchy and light hearted. I didn’t f...

They’re clearly going to. I have tickets to the Cain’s show and would like to “unplan” my Tulsa trip ASAP.

Hope it’s a good one!
I had to back out due to an unexpected funeral.

And after Omicron there will be another variant. COVID will continue to exist in some form I’d imagine as long as any of us are alive. I’m not off loading my tickets or anything, I just have a hard time seeing them play these shows scheduled so closely to canceled dates. It’s 2020 deja vu, and I gue...
