Re: Artist of the Week - Hayes Carll/Trouble in Mind

Nice one Clams, I have listened to Trouble In Mind more than a few times. Did you see Hayes Carll on Austin City Limits a couple of weeks ago with Ray Wylie Hubbard? they did an awesome Drunken Poets Dream together. P.S. Beaumont is a shithole--smelly and polluted, because of all the refineries and...

Re: Artist of the Week - Hayes Carll/Trouble in Mind

Great job Clams, although I'm a bit surprised you aren't more familiar with hist first 2 albums. I actually think Little Rock is a better album than Trouble in Mind, but both are great. Flowers & Liquor is a good album too, but it has less full band arrangements. The title track on Little Rock i...

Re: Go Go Boots and Secret To A Happy Ending Out Feb 15

The trouble with "Eyes Like Glue" is it's atypically maudlin and earnest for Cooley - turgid, even. I appreciate the sentiment, and I don't think it's a bad song - on the contrary, it's sorta sweet - but I rely on Cooley to deliver the 'zinger' sorta lines, lines that me me laugh out loud,...

Pulaski and Mercy Buckets will be the best closers to a DBT album since Lookout Mountain and Goddamn Lonely Love. Which is interesting because TBTD, while being right in the middle of the pack for DBT albums in my opinion, also has what I feel are the weakest 2 closing songs in Flying Wallendas and...

I'm surprised to see "Unsatisfied" on so many lists. It's a great song, but not one I think of when it comes to songs you crank the shit out of. It does build to a crescendo and there's nothing like screaming I'm so Unsatisfied at the top of your lungs. Cathartic. I can totally see that. ...

Re: albums you heard for the first time this week

Springsteen's sound is all over The '59 Sound. It seems obvious to me. Go figure. FWIW, Springsteen picked The '59 Sound as his album of that year for a Q magazine piece. To me, American Slang sounds less specifically derivative, but also clearly owes a debt to the Boss. Perhaps not surprisingly, i...

I don't hear an iota of Springsteen in The Gaslight Anthem. I think most Springsteen fans would be horrified at the comparison I felt that way about their first album, but I hear a ton of Bruce in American Slang. From the production, to the anthemic choruses, to the relentless stomp of some of the ...

I know sometimes it can be difficult to separate an artist from the stupid shit they do (Ryan Adams being one such case) but I can't stand Kanye West. 2010 is the worst year for music in the last five years. It's unlikely that my top five (TBTD, Two Cow Garage- Sweet Saint Me, Alejandro Escovedo- Street Songs of Love, Glossary- Feral Fire, Roadside Graves- You Won't Be Happy With Me) would even make my top ten of either of the last two years. Anyone else think that Dancin' Rickey is Shonna's best song yet? I really, really like it.

Also, I found the guy in the background who says "Dancin' Rickey has diabetes? WHAT THE FUCK?!" to be hilarious.

I don't know. I'm not nearly as pessimistic.

In 2007 I saw DBT at a little theatre in Iowa City, playing for about 200 people. In 2010, I saw them in the same theatre with about 2-3 times as many people there. I know it's small and anecdotal, but I think it's a good sign.
