Re: DBT track # 148 - When Walter Went Crazy
In recent years Patterson Hood has written several songs told from the community's point of view. "The Wig He Made Her Wear" and "Drag The Lake Charlie" are two examples of this. IMO, "When Walter Went Crazy" is one of his best songs written from this perspective. One g...

Re: SOTW 149 - First Air of Autumn
I grew up in NJ and never believed people with southern accents were ignorant. Probably because my first grade Sunday School teacher was from Alabama as was my sixth grade teacher. We also had several neighbors who were from the south. I always associated the various southern accents with education ...

Re: SOTW 149 - First Air of Autumn
In a way this song kind of sums up the whole album thematically. Starting with the title: First Air of Autumn -- It has a double meaning. On one hand it is that first breath you take where you smell the fallen leaves, the wood burning in the fireplaces (at least in my neck of the woods), and the fam...

Re: Track of the week #147 - Hearing Jimmy Loud
I love this song. On one hand it is a cautionary tale about never growing up but in true DBT fashion the narrator never takes the position that he is any better than the guy he is singing about. Just "learning, luck and half sense" separate him from Jimmy. The other thing is the way the so...

English Oceans At Six Months
During the initial release period of an album the loyal fanbase is usually overwhelmingly positive. It is all part of the excitement at hearing new songs for the first time and a tour in support of the record. Six months later, however, is the first real test as to whether or not a record can live u...

Re: Now What?
In the event of the nightmare scenario Patterson, Cooley and Isbell will all have solo careers. Brad will likely play with one or both or maybe even all three. Matt Patton will become the Steve Albini of the south central rock scene. (He already is since just about every great new band from Mississi...

Re: Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires
Over 150 people at Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park tonight. The Glory Fires absolutely killed it! Totally won over the crowd which was catching them for the first time ever. At one point I leaned against the stage and looked at the packed room and thought about the shows I caught last winter where they ...

Re: Another Quick Five Albums: Alt Country
Jason & Scorchers are from Nashville (not Music Row, but Nashville regardless). I don't think it has anything to do with geography , just sound & aesthetic. I guess what I meant was coming up outside of the Nashville system. Jason and The Scorchers were located in Nashville but released the...

Re: Another Quick Five Albums: Alt Country
When I consider pre- No Depression era stuff, I will usually use the alt.country tag if the band or artist established their careers someplace other than Nashville, Austin or Bakersfield, especially if they came up playing the same clubs as the underground/alternative rock bands. So a band like Gree...

Re: Outsiders perspective of all this
I am an expert on being in relationships with women not into DBT. It usually goes farther than that. They don't understand my musical taste at all. Back in 2010 a girl broke up with me after going to a rock show -- the second night of DBT at Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. Those shows were the kickoff...

Re: No August Athens shows this year?
The GA Theater is a great venue. But Patterson and Cooley have been cranky lately about the summer weather in Georgia and Alabama so it doesn't surprise me that they are trying to get as many summer gigs as they can in cooler climates this year.

I have a side business, more of a hobby really, dealing in guitars, amps & effects pedals and I see a lot of the same people asking absurd prices. A lot of people who are uneducated in values or don't take the time to do the research feel that just because something is old it must be valuable. ...

Re: Smoking Crack on eBay and Jason Isbell
I've got an autographed self-titled cd. I don't want to sell it. Too many great memories from the day I got it. Still, I don't see an autographed out of print Isbell cd to be worth more than $50. Neither do I, although that may be lowballing it just a bit. Some people out there who don't know any b...

I thought I saw him on the other side of the street in Asheville on the second night of The Alabama Shakes gig.

I also don't believe there's a significant difference between a pop and rock musician's career trek. They're not mutually exclusive, and there's no defined one track to becoming either. I also don't believe there's a always tangible difference between rock and pop. They are not mutually exclusive i...

Ok Rev, I kind of see where you're going here but Morrissey never got airplay? I mean that's not right, there was a time in the late eighties where you heard him all over the dial. Also some of the best stuff in the seventies never got a lick of airplay. How many radio stations played David Crosby'...

Can't get behind that at all, Rev. Nope, me either. It's way to pigeonholed for me. It seems pointlessly pedantic to take two records, one by a band one by a solo artist with session cats, basically going for the same vibe and say that one is Rock and one isn't. I also don't like the distinction be...

Re: The 80's: Total Shite or Underrated
Back to the 80's. The major difference between the period 1967 to 1980 is that commercial FM radio pretty much played the best rock releases out there. Yes, there were great bands who slipped through the cracks (The Velvets, Big Star) but the most enduring music from that era was played on the radio...

Can't get behind that at all, Rev. They are Carducci's ideas, not mine, though I subscribe to his definition of rock as I have never found a better or more concise definition. I have some major issues with Carducci's aesthetic as to what constitutes great rock music and what doesn't. But the defini...

It only took two pages before we divert from the thread topic which is par for the course at 3DD. Anyhow, IMO, the best definition of rock comes from Joe Carducci's manifesto Rock and The Pop Narcotic . “Rock music is rock and roll made conscious of itself as a small band music, as opposed to being ...

Re: The 80's: Total Shite or Underrated
Even if those bands scored a deal with a major label, no amount of shitty 80's production was going to convince a program director to add an album by X to their playlist. Again, I guess it depends on where you live but WRDU in Raleigh (the successor to WQDR, which went country in 1984) played X. Th...

Re: 2nd tier FM radio dinosaurs from the '70s
Bad Company are my favorite of the bands listed; if 2nd tier is defined as radio play, I've always heard you couldn't escape the Eagles in the 70's so they would have to be a 1st tier band. Eagles were huge. Bob Seger was as well. Every album from Live Bullet on had four or five songs that became A...

Re: The 80's: Total Shite or Underrated
To me, the early '90's was when the great music of the early to mid-eighties finally received some mainstream recognition. Granted, it was too late for bands like Black Flag, The Replacements, Husker Du, The Minutemen and The Dead Kennedys to cash in. But Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Jane's Addiction and The...
